Kazahana Family Mass Battle - 471's Introduction - 04-08-2005, 07:14 AM

An audio short story based upon the characters of the mass-author, mass-multimedia format series Kazahana Family Mass Battle. Think of it as Battle Royale only with an entire family as the participants. All 600 of them. And the battlefield being the entire island of Japan. With a large cast of unique and ultimately disposable characters.... Who is the one amongst them who will survive the odds, and claim the almighty family prize???

In this clip, we are introduced to the Kazahana family member known as 471, as well as his perverse little hobby. Will this be an asset or hindrance to the Kazahana Family Mass Battle? Will he even bother to participate in such an activity? Listen on and find out!

471's Introduction - Medium Quality Version
Running Time: 6:21 minutes
Size: 5.81MB

Story by: G-Force
Script Edits: Max Mao and Edwyn Tiong
Mixed by: Edwyn Tiong

Cast (in order of appearance):
Victim - Lucien Dodge
471 - G-Force
Muga - Edwyn Tiong

Soundtrack:
Vision of Escaflowne OST 2 - Charm
Vision of Escaflowne OST 2 - Machine Soldier
Vision of Escaflowne OST 2 - Shadow of Doubt
Vision of Escaflowne OST 3 - Fatal

Sound Effects:
Final Fantasy 8
Guilty Gear X
Max Payne 2
Phantom Menace

The first clip I mixed for the Kazahana Family Mass Battle series is still available! While set in the same world, the latest clip isn't a direct continuation of this one, though it does feature a recurring character. Muga. Voiced by me. Of course. XD:

Syuuhei's Phone Call - Medium Quality Version
Running Time: 4:04 minutes
Size: 3.73MB

Anyway, the cast comments (since it's in vogue to have these sorts of ego-boosting sections now):
Lucien - There is no other person I'd ask screams from. You did an outstanding job acting like an out-of-his-mind terrified loon that mixing the freak out scenes was a breeze. Since you basically did all the work for me. Anything which makes a mixer's job easier is good for me! And thanks for the extra little gasps and "shaking noises" that made the transition form line to line much more natural-sounding rather than just "terrified line - blank - terrified line - more blank - ultimate freak out - silent as a grave".

G-Force - You did very nicely as 471. At first, I wasn't sure if your voice was going to work (I imagined 471 as having a bit of a smoother, calmer sort of psychotic) but once the mix with you and Lucien started going it all worked out very nicely. So kudos for exceeding my expectations there, and thanks for putting up with my requests for redoes. I hope that you yourself will ultimately hear the difference it made!

Edwyn - Uh, I probably should have rerecorded all my lines and made Muga sound a heck of a lot deeper to match his voice in the first clip, but I was in a hurry to get this clip out. Hence the rather lukewarm performance. Hopefully the inclusion of some martial-arty-action thang will draw attention away from that! If anybody actually understood that little scene.... I hate trying to make action scenes work in a radioplay. Oy.

In any case, I hope you enjoy this little snippet of chaos that is the world of Kazahana!

Mixing: The mixing was fantastic. The cuts in the opening that felt like a camera quick-zooming into the helpless victim were done very well. That was probably my favorite aspect in this production, mixing wise. The lines of all VAs were clear, and the effect on GForce was just perfect. Not over the top, not too little either.

Lucien: You can die like no other. Awesome

GForce: Impressive! The character seemed very comfortable for you to do.

Edwyn: Aaaah, Muga-sensei. He did sound younger than in our Kazahana clip, but the character was still portrayed exactly the way you did in the other short, which is good. Awesome VAing, wouldn't expect any less from you ^_^

Complaint: I HATE CLIFFHANGERS.

I'm glad the people who have listened thus far enjoyed it! I tend to shy away from applying myself to mixing serious productions that often. Mainly because comedic audioplays seems to be where my skills be at (or at least gets the most response), so I'm glad the work I put into this clip hasn't all gone to waste.

Tamtu - I'm glad someone noticed that little touch of cutting in closer and closer to the victim until you could hear their heartbeat! A little effort by me to make it seem the listener is right there next to the victim and experiencing the same fear he is. For which I have to thank Lucien for his excellent "I'M FREAKING OUT!" ability. XD And the effect for G-Force's voice was ultimately done in post-production.... I actually got him to wear a surgical mask while recording, but that wasn't enough, so added some kind of echo that made his voice sound a little metallic and hollow.... Not unlike Darth Vader's mask, really. And yeah, Muga is too young in this clip, yargh! Need to sound deeper. @_@

I gotta leave my comments here cause I have soooooo much to say about this radioplay.

Edwyn: You captured the vision I had for this production perfectly! In fact, it exceeded my expectations by tenfold. Thanks to your revesions as you made this the best it could be. Of course your performance was awesome as well. I like your characterization of Muga being a willy old fox who still can kick ass all while still taking his job very seriously.

GForce: What Edwyn forgot to tell you guys about my recordings was that on top of wearing a surgical mask, I also had to record my lines in one fat file. That was a very interesting experience for yours truly but I had a fun time. I had experience playing a smiliar character (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac) so this wasn't unfamiliar territory for me. Thanks to this radioplay, my line quality has shot through the roof as I no longer have to worry about puffs and clicks. About my laugh. What happened was I wanted to do one long laugh attack but I drew in too little breath and it came out short. Since I was so far in my lines I tried again but I got similar results. So on the third try I just kept on laughing even though I was pratically out of breath so I was forcing those last few checkles out of me like there was no tomorrow.

Lucien After I finished writing the script I contemplated with who should be "killed" and even thought about having Max or Edwyn choose a suitable VA. Of course I thought that you would be an excellent canidate as you are one of the best screamers I've ever heard. I hope you had no hard feelings of me killing you and all but it serves you right for getting so many roles over me! jp

You should really produce more Ed; you have very good intuition about how to setup a scene in the realms of audio. Your organization of sound effects are clear and precise, the filters put you in the space of the piece, without overdoing it and drawing attention to them. And your spacing of the dialogue comes of as very natural sounding. Excellent use of music as well. Great job.

mixing: Very smooth, especially the running scene, i can picture it out clearly.

Lucien: Nice, very nice... It moves me, as in, you acted really really good such that i can feel your fear. Amazing screen, and pantings. Good job! =D

G-Force: Evilness, greatly interpreted the role.

Edwyn: You sounded great as the informative guide person, muga. I haven't heard the other clip so i am not sure how older you should be like, nonetheless, good job.

In general, i enjoyed the clip, that's all it counts, right? =)
