This is based on an old novella idea of mine that I might still try to make in the future. I have not decided yet to revisit the characters or turn this into a serial someday (current answer: probably not). For now, this is a stand-alone story that is self-contained, once the episode's done it is done. Think of this as my "Broken", to reference a production made by B Squared Productions. It's a half-hour, character-driven one-shot.

Brutal Kids of This Promised Future

Fourteen years ago, nanotechnology was introduced to the world by the way of plain, square-like machines. It was the new Industrial Revolution, it was said. It would make everyone's lives perfect, it was said.

It was true. Nanotechnology could make almost anything people ever wanted, short of life itself. But the introduction of nanotechnology brought unforeseen consequences no one had ever guessed

The complete collapse of law and order. People quit or were fired from their jobs. Taxes stopped being paid. People lost any motivation they had to keep going without motivation. Governments all over the world began tearing themselves apart piece by piece.

Soon, the United States government, on the verge of collapse, opted to destroy them all. It was resisted by those who wanted to keep the machines. And, out of the clashes that shattered the country into western and eastern halves, something else unexpected happened: the release of pure nanotechnology into the air. The pure machines bonded to people, changing them into something not quite human, not quite machine: the nanomancers. That is, if they didn't kill the humans in the painful, agonizing bonding process instead.

Nanomancers are gifted with abilities that almost make them look like magicians. With mere raw materials and knowledge of design they can make anything, or deconstruct it with mere thought and desire. In the United States, now divided into two distinct halves, they can be the greatest friend or the worst enemy. In most cases, by design or by choice, they are the enemy, whether by bigotry or being living reminders of the anarchy that followed nano's introduction.

Marie Lyle is one of those people who are artifical nanomancers, people who managed to survive the bonding. Once, she was a librarian. For the last seven years, she has been forced to wander the earth because of the fear of nanomancers. At her side is a young teenager named Justin Sanders, who is still trying to develop and control his new abilities. As master and apprentice, they roam the Western United States as perpetual vagabonds while searching for a purpose and a new life. .

During one of their travels, they hear from a town about a cursed, evil girl threatening the town. Knowing there are evil nanomancers in the world, Marie and Justin investigate, only to find the girl, River, sickened by a nanomancer-only disease called Corruption Syndrome. A natural nanomancer, having the ability since birth, River represents a possible future of human society . . . that is, if she's allowed to live.

A terrified town is about to kill River and her mysterious mother once and for all, and Marie and Justin are caught in the middle. Will River, who is losing control over her powers, become what the town fears? Or will the town get their wish and destroy the little girl for good? Marie and Justin must discover a way that will satisfy all, or all may perish . . .

Please record in good quality, and please keep pops, background noise, bumps, etc., to a minimum. If you absolutely CANNOT record in .mp3, send in .wav format, but please note you will be asked to submit in .mp3 if you are actually cast.

- -PLEASE DON'T SUBMIT in .rar FORMAT. My home PC cannot open .rar files, and the majority of my college's PCs can't open them either.
- -YOU CAN SUBMIT IN PIECES. In other words, you can send your audition in multiple emails or send some characters earlier and others later.
- THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS: March 30th.

Marie Lyle
Age: 30

Description: A former librarian, Marie was forced to quit after her contact with a rogue nanotechnology swarm. For the last seven years, she has become the closest thing there is to a master of nanomancing, but she has not lost her avid love for the written word. Despite a cheerful, kind, energetic exterior (that makes many think she's younger than she really is), she forgets nothing and can be deadly serious and calm. Views Justin almost as a son of sorts, and is extremely protective of him.

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Adult. A smooth voice that can shift all over the place in energy and tone.

Irene Mattay
Age: 25

Description: The mysterious young mother of River, something about Irene does not add up. Irene seems to love River dearly, but at the same time, her contact with nano seems to have happened after River was born, which is impossible. So what does that make her? Is she really River's mother, simply a Good Samaritan, or someone more sinister?

Voice type: Medium-low to low. Adult. A husky, deep tone that is nevertheless attractive, but also carries a maturity beyond her years.

River Mattay
Age: 8

Description: A young girl normally full of energy, she has been sickened by Corruption Syndrome, which is attacking the nanomachines inside her and rendering them haywire. Her abilities being completely out of control, she is a danger to herself and everyone around her, and she struggles to comprehend the fear of killing the only person who loves her: her mother.

Voice type: High to medium-high. Girlish. Must be able to flip between energetic and happy-go-lucky (for flashbacks) to dead tired and sickly.

Jessie Nguyen
Age: 23

Description: A woman out to exterminate the nanomancers once and for all, after a bunch of nanomancer thugs murdered her two young kids in a failed robbery. Despite her hatred of nanotech she nevertheless questions destroying River, instead suggesting "rehabilitating" River into believing her powers are evil and never should be used. However, her position is found unacceptable to both sides, and Jessie must decide which is the lesser of the two evils.

Voice type: Medium-high to medium. Adult. Speaks clearly and knowingly, perhaps to the point of harshness.

Justin Sanders
Age: 14

Description: The apprentice of Marie. Justin came into contact with a rogue nano swarm two years ago, and is still trying to both control and develop his abilities. Emotionally raw after losing his entire family to the same swarm, he became a tagalong to Marie before becoming an apprentice. Now he only wants to help people the best he can . . . but he is discovering their are limits to what he can do, and not everyone wants his help . . . He finds Marie overbearing and embarrassing at periods but views her a close friend.

Voice type: Medium-high to medium. Young teenager. An energetic, youthful tone that can either be smooth or raspy (VA's choice). Can be voiced by a girl, but a male VA is preferred.

CAST TO: Self-cast. I apologize to all who tried for the part, but I didn't quite get what I wanted to hear so I'm going to self-cast. Again, I'm sorry, and thanks to all of you who took the time to try for him.

Will Jordan
Age: 23

Description: A young man who works at the town bookstore, Will possesses a love for the written word that is matched only by Marie. However, much to Marie's disappointment, Will has eyes only for Irene, even with the kid. Will is a kind, cheerful individual who nevertheless will protect Irene the best he can, even if it means being ostracized from people he has lived with his whole life.

Voice type: Medium-ish. Youthful adult. A smooth, kind, guy-next-door kind of voice, but is nevertheless has a handsome, pure tone.

Forrest Wilmington
Age: 35

Description: The charismatic mayor of the town, Forrest oversees one of the few major success stories coming out of the post-nanotechnology revolution. Under his watch, the town has managed to develop something resembling prosperity . . . but is leery of River Mattay. After River comes down with Corruption Syndrome, he hires Marie and Justin to take River out . . . only for the plan to blow up in his face. What will he do?

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Adult. A pure politician, speaks clearly, strongly, and convincingly, but manages to hide his true feelings quite well.

Mark Dover
Age: 32

Description: Forrest's "muscle" and personal bodyguard. Mark initially seems to be a mere dumb brute, but despite being a man of few words he has plenty of intelligence. He is no mere lackey but a political savant in his own right, but also has a clear concept of right and wrong. And now he is wondering if the mayor he has protected for the last six years is crossing that line . . .

Voice type: Medium-low to low. Adult. Potentially a gravelly or deep tone.
