Arrow Nobuta. wo Produce - Ep 1 - 01-16-2009, 04:09 AM

Nobuta. wo Produce
Episode 1: "Bullied Transfer Student to Really Popular Girl"
or "How to live like a big tree"

"Nobuta. wo Produce" is a Japanese drama about an unlikely pair of friends taking on the challenge of making over the most unpopular girl in school. It is considered to be one of the best dramas from Japan.

54 minutes! Not bad!

Notes
  • This episode is truncrated. Abrided. Condensed. It's shorter. See "What You Missed" below for more information.
  • Parts of the original that only made sense in Japanese have been removed in order to retain their integrity (meaning ,I would ruin them).
  • Voices may sound different from the original actors, but I think they're all suitable for their roles. You just need to get used to them, like any other dubbed material. The reason is because I cast for talent, rather than simply voice type.
  • If the above methods of downloading do not work for you, please let me know and I will work something out.
  • You are free to upload clips to Youtube or some such site only if you credit everyone involved or link to the project's website.

Cast List
Full cast list is on this webpage, complete with pictures.
Let me know if there's an error!

What You Missed
Due to the length of the episodes, I've trimmed out some subplots, especially those that created entirely new characters. This was not because I didn't think them necessary or interesting, but because I wanted to make the series easier to dub in general. Less subplots means less scenes to toil over, and less characters means less waiting on lines. So here's what you missed from the pristine Japanese episode:
  • Shuji's family. These are actually very important scenes in exploring Shuji's personality. They show that he's actually different when he's home, and actually does care about people close to him. The scenes also introduce Shuji's mom, who is always traveling abroad. Shuji's inabilty to let people close to him is rooted to her absences.
  • Vice Principal Katherine. Yes, Catherine with a 'K' -- and I'm sticking to it! Her scenes are awkward and almost seem like filler, so I took her completely out for this episode. She introduces a creepy monkey hand relic to Shuji that is supposed to grant 3 wishes.
  • The monkey hand. It falls into the three main character's hands. Shuji wishes for his willow tree to be in a better place. Nobuta wishes Bando harm -- then takes it back -- and then wishes for the Willow tree as well. Watch yourself for Akira's wish (honestly can't remember what it was).

Re: Nobuta. wo Produce - Ep 1 - 01-16-2009, 04:11 AM

Hawkeye as SHUJI: Well, what can I say that you don't already know? I think you're a very talented voice actor, who could definitely make it in the business if he tried. I agree that the word I think of when I hear you perform is "natural" as well. And if not for other mediums, being natural is completely essential to live-action. I love that you record so much extra and pay attention to detail. Sure, there are times that you don't, but that could be the video's fault (I'm talking about the eating-food scene we already discussed). But I'm huge freaking perfectionist. All those redoes I gave you and you never got time for? See how the episode went swimmingly still? Don't let anything I say make you feel bad about your performances, because you're already at a level that can't be touched. And you're an amazing singer as well. I'm going to force you to sing more, so watch out. xD You've been locked away in my VA trunk of awesomeness and intrigue since Casshern, so no need to put you back in there. =P You're gonna be big and I got all this for free, ahahahaaa!

Hikuro as AKIRA: You're a huge pain to work with. >=[ Just kidding. You actually have a lot to be proud of, despite your and some other's reaction to the performance. You were like the first person to submit lines and the first to finish. You did redoes within hours, and even toiled the whole scene over again (needlessly, but you did). However, I don't know if it was because you didn't want to ruin the episode for yourself or if you're an arrogant ass, but you failed to read instructions that caused half those redoes -- so not my fault! Also, make sure you're recording at maximum quality and don't peak the mic! Oh, what was I saying before? Right. Out of the auditions I received for Akira, there were only a couple that stood out to me as being capable of the part. I was looking for someone to overact and record way too much for me. I also wanted someone who'd be committed to the project. Who did that narrow it done to? You. Don't let anyone get you down about your performance, because I love it. I'm very attached to this rendition of the character now, and I think you nail him whenever you laugh. I'm interested to see how you refine the character for future episodes. I think you mentioned you were going to make him less whiny? Anyways. You've got a huge challenge against you from the get-go, since people farking love Yamapi and think it would be a sin against God to replace him with anyone else. You go and prove those people wrong.

Jaela as NOBUTA: There were a lot of auditions for Nobuta. And this is a difficult role is all aspects. Acting it is more than just sounding quiet, or even stuttering. It has to be felt -- and I really felt it with you. You has said that you could relate to her, and could draw from past experiences. I think it really shows that you understand her. I sound like a highschool art teacher, but that aside, I'm very happy with your performance. You're a GREAT Nobuta, and I don't think many people would be able to play her at your level. I'm going to lock you in my trunk of VAs to keep you forever. ^.^

tweetychick630 as MARIKO: You were perfect for Mariko. I couldn't imagine her voice any other way. This role could so easily be a generic girl voice, but you brought something unique to the part. You said when you submitted your lines that you were worried about sounding too meek. But that's perfect for the character. You sound genuinely sweet and sincere. You also sound very aware of your questionable relationship with Shuji, but are trying to hide it. I am VERY happy to have you working on this project, and I would be sad indeed if you could not join us for more episodes.

wpt1031 as YOKOYAMA, EXTRAS: You know I adore you, right? Your enthusiasm for this project was so appreciated that I hope you aren't disappointed with the episode. Your lines actually sounded really good in the "background classroom voice" mode, so I put the teacher there a lot. I hope you're okay with that! It's just that the teachers are really second fiddle to the students. Yokoyama has scenes in future episodes that I would otherwise normally cut, but for you I could mix an extra scene or two. Oh, and you also go in my locked trunk of collectible VAs to keep.

Phantasm as BOOKKEEPER: Your voice for him makes me laugh every time. It's so ridiculous that it makes sense. The guy himself is really out there, so why not his voice? I think you took a risk there and it really paid off.

Stephee as BANDO: Your voice possessed something perfect for this role. It was brute from years of being a bully, but almost rehearsed like it was all an act. I really enjoyed you as Bando, because I think it fits great. I also really appreciate you redoing Sc21 again, even though I used little of it (I did use some of it to be fair, for example in Sc5). You wanted to give up the role a couple times, but I seriously wanted YOU as Bando. You've been super sweet to work with, and I definitely want you onboard for more episodes. Please say you'll try!

Bianca Noelle as HASHIMOTO, KASUMI: You're a huge dear! You're the only one who submitted library lines out of the gang, and I used the heck out of it. Trust me, just listen. And I really enjoyed it, too. Your voice was so perky and playful that it worked good in just about any situation because of the character. It is also the only anime-high pitched voice, because out of the 4 gang girls, Hashimoto seemed like the one to sound like that. Which is funny, because the actress actually has the lowest voice of the four. And I think I was worried about you playing the bad people in the show because you seemed like a really good girl yourself. But I would have to say you did brilliantly as a bully! The only trouble I foresee is you sounding too much like Kasumi in future episodes. Also, for future episodes, don't be afraid to record extra stuff for the scenes themselves. I think it was ... in Sc21, I would've loved more from you. But that's what the library is for! So everything was just fine. Come join the other VAs in my collector's trunk. You're a keeper.

Sayaka as NOMURA: Sayaka! You were a great pay off, and an excellent rendition of Nomura. The character needed a special voice, and you definitely were the unique voice for it. My sister asked me if you were actually Japanese! I thought that was cool. I think you, combined with the other three VAs in the gang made up an great array of voices. Even though you were sick, I thought your voice brought a lot of color to the character. And I was VERY happy when I saw that you recorded nonstop for Sc21. I would've loved everyone to do that because it opens up so much more to the VA to record and respond to. And your effort to record more was so nice that I wish it wasn't drowned out! For example, I adore that little noise you made when Bando pokes your head. So cute! Your mic quality could improve some more, but who's couldn't? Anyway, let's go for more rounds on the Nobuta train!!

fairuza as NUMATA: You did an excellent job filling in for this role. antiperfect had to unfortunately drop out, but I think you picked up after her amazingly -- and at such a short notice. You actually did pretty good maintaining a steady voice over all of the lines, which would difficult if it's unnatural to you. I am very grateful for you helping me out. This saved my skin, and I love what you bring to the scenes. You're too excellent to work with to let you go!

Ry-Guy as YOSHIDA, HIMAYARA, EXTRAS: You've helped me out a lot by taking on multiple roles. You have a great talent, and I planned to abuse it. Yoshida, I knew, was a challenge. He's a weird character that doesn't seem rewarding at first glance. But he's a big mouth, and that means a lot of lines! I was worried about finding any voice for him, but I'm rather happy with how your rendition turned out. And I have to give you a BIG thank you for all the extra stuff you gave me. I mean, you really helped me a bunch by having filler lines, and being creative with your character brought the scenes to life. My favorite lines were you as the sideshow announcer. Classic! You really did the best you can with your lines, and even though Yoshida sometimes acts like a retard, you met the challenge wonderfully. I could barely recognize you as Mr. Himayara, which is good for a VA. Your focus and hardwork is not lost on me, because I clearly see your efforts. And I couldn't ask for a better VA to work with. Just fix that quality issue we talked about, and get some library lines in and you'll be perfect. ^_~

BlueSentaiHero as KAWAI, EXTRAS: You were really enthusiastic and involed with this project from the very beginning. I wholly appreciate that, and I'm happy to work with VAs like you. I'll try to get you more roles. My favorite lines of yours were you taking the picture. It sound like you were really there!

Scottoka1 as AKASHI: You're my hero! You were like the first one to submit lines, at least out of the boys. You were my only material to work with for a long time in the scenes, and I kept thinking "thank god for him". And you know what made the deal sweeter? You were the only one of the boys to submit a library. Which means you're going to hear yourself all over the episode (mostly to embelish your existing lines). I had so much fun with your lines, and you were extremely helpful. I can't really express what a big help you were. Just know that I have a lot of respect for you. Not to mention your voice is SUPER PERFECT for the character.

Kei as SHITTAKA: I don't know why this character was hard to get lines from. He's a main freaking character! Well, main secondary character anyway. He's also the cutest little guy in the show, too. Your voice is perfect for the character, as it is just the right amount of cuteness and smarty-pants-ness. And I really appreciate your involvement with the project. The only thing I would have LOVED is your library. I could've spread your voice all over the episode. Anyway, thanks for doing those redos. Your enthusiasm makes me really happy -- which makes you an important asset. That's it! Get into my VA trunk!

Arahime and midnightmoonproductions as HITOMI and KIMURA: Girls, I have to tell you how much I needed your lines. I'm not even exaggerating, your lines were extremely useful to me. You guys are littered all over the episode! You'd actually be surprised where. See if you can spot every instance. =P Okay, but seriously, I owe you guys so much for your library lines. I. Love. You. Guys.

Dcgoddess3 as TAKADA: You rocked your two lines. 'Nuff said. =P

Shintarou Inuzuka as HASEGAWA: I know we had some trouble in the end there, but you finally delivered and it wasn't bad! I really like your second scene as Hasegawa the most, because you were more exaggerated. You even beat PolePosition in that scene!

PolePosition as JAMES, KONDO: You single-handedly saved the show! Well, I like to believe so. You really surprised me when you just emailed me out of the blue, "Here's my lines, and OH YES, the lines for several other characters. Have fun." I was like omigosh*die*, because that's something you can't expect, especially from someone you don't know. This extra effort was greatly apprecaited, and I haven't forgot it. In regards to your performance, your accent for James is so awesome! I absolutely love how you made him sound. And all that extra stuff you recorded ... I know I've told you this before, but you did exactly what I wanted everyone to do: over-dub. You're a great example for a VA and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you for any other parts. The only thing that could hold you back from main roles is your physical file quality. Either play with your recorder's setting or get a better mic. Don't waste your talent!. B-T-Dubs, I'm shoving you in this trunk and not letting you out.

Sasuya as MISAKI: Even though you're second-banana to Nami's character, I sometimes think you were brighter in scenes. You have a very natural approach, and that's very crucial to live-action dubs. Thank you so much for all your work so far!

antiperfect as NAMI: Girl, I don't know where you went, but it's so unfortunate that you disappeared. We were going to have a thing, where I was going to help you with HYD and such. Well ... at least you got this performance out and done with. I'm sorry that your Numata one had to be replaced because it was missing lines. But what I did hear of it, it was perfectly fine. Oh well! You can always come back to the project.

Knight of the New Moon as TEZUKA: It was fun working with you, because you were so nice about it! When I asked for a special, non-scripted line you happily did it (and multiple times). You're a very big person for that, and you should be proud. Your creepy Tezuka laugh was perfect!

Zeix as TANI: You're a strange little fellow! Kidding, kidding. =P You did an excellent job with Tani, and you were very prompt with your lines (there at the beginning). You actually sound pretty refined in your voice, which might also be your downfall. For my project at least, don't be afraid to sound casual! You're just a kid in a school, as opposed to an anime hero fighting monsters. lol

Did I miss anyone?

Forgive me, wpt1031! You know that slot was yours. I must have got distracted by a pretty butterfly and forgot to put your name (I copy/pasted it from Ry-Guy's credits). Sorry! All better now.

This was probably one of my favorite dubs that ever got released and I've never had such a stressful wait for it's release!

Thank you for your hard work Aleema, it was wonderful. Next episode expect so much Shittaka your head will explode!

Jaela as Nobuta was so amazing and perfect that I can't even remember how the actress sounded in Japanese. So little spoken, I loved it the most.

Shuji was perfect <33

Akira was different but it clicked so easily, though when he mimicked his father it didn't sound like he was mimicking but had a different voice all together.

Bando was Amazing, I loved it. I can't wait to see her centric episode dubbed (WITH YOU IN IT) because I know I'm going to cry like a baby!

All the students fit so well; James, the destiny pair, Tani, Tezuka, Yoshida---okay I'm just naming everyone but I sincerely loved EVERY single actor in this.
