All That Remains is...?

2016: August 15th, Olympic Opening Ceremonies, Chicago, Illinois, United States. The bombs detonated all over the city, leveling it and dispersing three times more radiation than the lethal dose upon contact. The United States of America's government was leveled all the way to the Secretary of Homeland Security. Fifteen other heads of state were killed. The death toll remains uncountable, but it is guessed that nearly three-quarters of Chicago's population perished that day, along with over half of the surrounding suburbs, not only due to the explosions, but to the subsequent radiation.

2046: World War III has persisted for thirty years. Nearly a third of the pre-war US population has perished, and other nations have been wiped off the map via foreign occupations or nuclear destruction. Only a few superpowers remain in a bitter fight to the end. The United States and Canada fight an invasion of Yukon and Alaskan soil by China and Russia. Britain and what little remains of NATO tries to hold Germany. Japan is a lone island surrounded by enemies, with its only foreign supplies coming from highspeed US/Japanese "runners", pirates, and smugglers. India and China fight a bloody war that has destroyed Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Myanmar, and has embroiled nearly every southeastern Asian nation besides on both sides.

During this always-volatile war, 32-year-old Captain Laura Haines has emerged as one of the finest soldiers in the US Marine Corps and the military in general. At this point, that qualification goes to those who simply survive. And Laura has done that in spades. Whether in Alaska, in Siberia, in Poland and Germany, in the Middle East, she has come out of every conflict, every battle, alive. However, she is not without war wounds, external and internal. And now, her most difficult mission has been assigned to her: She must infiltrate Chicago with a small squad and assassinate a monster in the literal sense of the word, before his faction begins to break out of the military's containment barrier. And if she cannot succeed, she must bring the battered, irradiated remnant of Chicago down with her.

Inside Chicago, a conflict of the more personal sort is brewing. 17-year-old Jesse Loeffler is the son of the local leader of a bunker network underneath Chicago, made out of old basements and fallout shelters and expanded since Chicago's destruction. However, an uprising by a rival faction in the network has taken over, and his father has fled with his remaining followers to plan a counterstrike, abandoning his children. With a few childhood friends, his sister, and a cyborg named Alice, he must escape and track down his father in the ruined wastes of a city he has never seen before, against dangers he never fathomed facing. However, when his father seems to make a deal with the devil, is it worth it to Jesse to regain his home, in return for perpetual servitude?

By mere chance, Laura and Jesse cross paths. Can they ignore their differences and mutually accomplish each other's goals? Will Laura destroy herself to leave Chicago a smoldering crater? Or will they both succumb to the horrors of Chicago's wasteland, and let abominations run unchecked throughout the United States?

Laura Haines

Age 32

Description: An exhausted veteran of many theaters in the never-ending World War III, Laura knows her way around virtually every weapon in existence by virtue of necessity. Laura wants nothing more to escape the conflict, only to find that no matter where she goes the war follows her and drags her back in. She is feared, hated, and respected among her peers, feared because of her thousand-yard-stare, hated because of her dislike for authority, respected because of her ability to get herself and her soldiers out of battles alive and victorious. It will not be long before she will be unable to readjust to any aspect of civilian life, and the government knows this. However, she is being asked to carry out one final mission before finally escaping the deluge of battle: Chicago. Will she be able to survive this difficult mission that is nothing like she has ever experienced? And can she tolerate Jesse and his friends, who may be her only keys to survival?

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Adult. Worn and rough, like she has worn her voice down through yelling and smoking. Despite this, she doesn't sound like she's entering her forties or fifties.

Derek Johannsen

Age: 25

Description: The leader of Fireteam Charlie during Laura's mission. A lieutenant who comes out of the elite Recon troops, Derek has seen combat, but never fathomed trying to survive in Chicago's remnant. He has a young wife and kid at home and another child on the way, and badly wants a deferment on bounds of parenthood so he can leave the war before it gets him killed. However, despite his attempts, the military never contacts him back . . .

Voice type: Medium-low. Adult. Has a bit of a brisk, no-nonsense demeanor, but speaks lovingly and tenderly about his family occasionally.

Andre Scalzi

Age: 43

Description: Marine colonel and the person who assigns Laura to her mission. He is quite proud of his history, as he rose up from the grunt ranks all the way to Colonel. He does not like insubordination in his soldiers (which causes his relationship with Karin to be strained in particular). He supervises Laura's mission, although he rarely speaks to her personally after dismissing her. Internally, he regards Laura as insane and as a danger to society and the US Marine Corps, and figures that this is a suitable mission to get rid of her once and for all. He is also extremely Christian and tries to keep himself from swearing, which the troops mock behind his back.

Voice type: Medium-low to low. Rough. Somewhat stereotypical veteran Marine and has a good command tone.

Karin Wesley

Age: 22

Description: A freshly-minted Lieutenant, Karin finds herself talking to Laura through wireless long-range communications, relaying instructions and advice from her post. Karin is a sarcastic, disillusioned soldier who does not want to be part of the military, and her attitude, while it drives both Laura and Andre crazy (for different reasons), it is outclassed by her competence and her response time, which allows her to stay on the job.

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Young adult. Fresh-sounding but a little snotty when she wants to be.

Note: Karin swears a LOT, and drops the F-bomb frequently. Don't try for her unless you're either prepared for that, or if you're willing to work with me on censoring lines that nevertheless get the original point across.

Jesse Leoffler

Age: 17 (turns 18 in the story)

Description: The son of the leader of the local underground bunker, Jesse has never seen the sun nor been exposed to any part of the city, instead living a secluded life below the surface. However, a rebellion against his father has made him intensely vulnerable and he is forced to flee the bunker before the rebels get ahold of and execute him. Now he finds himself an exile in the wasteland, and exposed to the dangers of Chicago. If he is not careful, he will die, either from attack or radioactivity. He believes in his father, but a startling revelation shows that nothing is what it seems, and leaves him questioning everything he wants to do. And before long, he finds himself being the only help Laura Haines has in her mission. Can he help her? Should he help her? His choice will alter the future of the United States.

Voice type: Medium. Teenager. A kind, gentle voice, perhaps a little naive-sounding. He is quite good at disguising his fear.

Sadie Loeffler

Age: 14

Description: Jesse's younger sister and a technological genius, she has an affinity for all kinds of robotic parts and computer programming. For the last five years, with help from her father, she has steadily constructed a cyborg named Alice that is the closest anyone's gotten to mimicking a real human being, out of her desire to have both a sisterly and motherly figure. Despises her father greatly and suspects he does not have her or Jesse's best interests at heart. She only agrees to track down her dad because she is guilty by association in the eyes of the rebellion. She has never forgiven Colleen for being responsible for the death of Sadie’s mother.

NOTE: She suffers from a deep depression and occasionally has suicidal thoughts. Don't try for her unless you're prepared to delve into such territory!

Voice type: Medium-high to high. Girlish teenager. She has a bit of a forced-to-grow-up-early demeanor, and often speaks in a sad, mournful tone.

Alice

Age: 5 (appears 18-24)

Description: A cyborg steadily constructed by Roy and Sadie Loeffler, Alice has changed from a small microchip into someone physically indistinguishable from a human being, and behavior-wise she is a close mimic. However, there are some things she does not understand and she can't always express herself coherently, showing there is still some bugs to be worked out of her system. Engineered to be both an older sister and motherly figure, Alice sounds extremely maternal for someone of her apparent age . . .

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Older teenager/young adult. Smooth. Generally sounds like a normal human being (in other words, she can get angry, be happy, cry, etc.). When her security override goes into effect she becomes completely emotionless (but don't sound robotic).

Kory Travis

Age: 18

Description: One of Jesse's childhood friends, her parents were also part of Roy Loeffler's faction. After they are killed during the uprising, Kory is filled with vehemence towards the traitors and wants revenge. Jesse's more benevolent attitude towards the rebels grates at her, but at the same time, she has developed feelings for him over the years but hasn't been able to get the words out, thus creating a love/hate relationship. She is an expert shot with a rifle or pistol, which has allowed her to recently join the surface exploration parties.

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Older teenager. Smooth. Her emotions and vocal tones dive all over the place, being able to sound quite innocent at times, and low and vicious when necessary.

Age: 18

Description: Another childhood friend of Jesse, Seth has just flunked his obstable exam and thus, will never be able to venture towards the surface, which disappoints him greatly. However, that is soon to the back of his mind when his parents join the rebellion of Susan Carmello. However, joining them means betraying his best friend. Before he can make a choice, it is made for him during the chaos, and he finds himself an exile on the surface, pursuing a man who may not be the heroic, just figure they think he is.

Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Older teenager. His voice still cracks a bit. Sounds quite outgoing and sure of himself, but at the same time doesn't stress out over things (in other words he's a bit of a slacker) . . . except in the field of battle and chaos, where he can get quite panicky.

Colleen Abrams

Age: 24

Description: An intelligent young woman, Colleen is considered to be part of the next generation of leaders emerging in the network. Calm, collected, empathetic, but more than capable of being ruthless, Colleen is well-respected among her peers and is a loyalist to Roy Loeffler. She considers herself the “big sister” of Jesse and Sadie not only out of responsibility, but because she genuinely cares for the two. She can’t connect with Sadie to her dismay. She was the reason why Jesse and Sadie’s mother died as a child, when she was almost killed on the surface and was saved by a sacrifice. She has a crush on Jesse but is too embarrassed to act upon it.

Voice type: Medium-low to low. Young adult. Smooth. Has a serene, mature tone that can be sweet or be stone-cold.

Lance Haskell

Age: 22

Description: A confident young man, Lance is proud of being part of the surface parties, but doesn’t let that get in the way of being friendly to others. He thinks he is extremely “manly” and keeps telling Jesse and Seth not to be “girlie men”, much to the annoyance of the actual women he hangs around with. He fancies himself a ladies’ man but usually comes on too obvious. He is extremely infatuated with Colleen but, to his dismay, she always rebuffs or ignores him. He is another Roy Loeffler loyalist, but maintains a rigid faith in him even as suspicions about Roy grows.

Voice type: Medium-low. Young adult, smooth or a little rough. MANLY, confident, and strong. Likes calling people younger than him or enemies “punks”.

Mina

Age: 10

Description: A young autistic girl who lives on the surface who has been apparently orphaned or abandoned, Mina is a quiet person who usually keeps to herself . . . until now. She quickly develops a connection with Sadie Loeffler and becomes inseperable from her. Why did she choose to make a connection with Sadie? What does Sadie mean to her? Does the connection with Sadie run deeper than either of them know?

Voice type: High. Girlish. Smooth, may have a lisp. She stutters frequently and has a lot of trouble expressing herself except when she is by herself with Sadie or with her cat, Fi. However, when Sadie is at her most emotional, Mina's autism tends to "evaporate" for a moment, like she is almost breaking free of it, but never quite does.

Susan Carmello

Age: 47

Description: The leader of the rebellion against Roy Loeffler, she has quickly and professionally seized control of the network, under promises of a better life and retaking the surface. However, despite her seeming zealotry, is she truly who she says she is? Or is she the harbinger of the network's demise?

Voice type: Low. Adult. Inbetween smooth and rough. Speaks with confidence, authority, and charisma. Does display a far darker side. She does NOT need to sound old.

Roy Loeffler

Age: 53

Description: The father of Jesse and Sadie, Roy has managed to maintain control of the network since the destruciton of Chicago in 2016. He is a capable scientist and helped construct Alice at his daughter's behest. However, despite working on Alice, Roy is somewhat distant from his children and has seemed more distracted than usual lately . . . when the rebellion happens he flees the area and is chased into the city, and schemes to retake the network with what's left of his followers. Can he truly be trusted, though? Does he have the network's interests at heart?

Voice type: Medium-low to low. Adult. A little worn, but doesn't need to sound aged. Speaks somewhat crudely and bluntly, like he is a half-scientist, half-thug. Can fly into rages.

The King

Age: Unknown (seems to be forty-ish)

Description: The King is the ruler of a large mutant faction in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, with his base in what's left of the Sears Tower. Over the years, since the days when he was human, he has slowly consolidated control of the mutant population, to the point where most of the other gangs are desperate, minimixed, or destroyed. He has long forgotten his human name and attachments, and is preparing to lead an attack out of Chicago and begin taking over the United States.

Voice type: Medium-low to low. Adult, monster. Gruff and slightly distorted. Sounds very strong and brute-ish, but can also sound intelligent. Has a slightly megalomaniacal air to him.

The Queen

Age: Unknown (appears to be late-thirties)

Description: The Queen, like The King, has forgotten what her past life was, and is currently the chief love of The King. A brilliant strategic mind and strong leader of troops, she has played a large role in The King's near-takeover of Chicago, and is also responsible for The King's most ambitious plan yet. She takes a sick pleasure in killing humans or enemies.

Voice type: Medium-high to medium-low. Adult, monster. Speaks with a heavy, lizard-or-snake-like hiss. Sounds conniving and intelligent.

Bob

Age: Unknown (impossible to tell)

Description: A skeletal, ghoul-like figure, he was once human but has since mutated into his current hideous form. However, he remembers his earlier human life all too well and despises his current status as a gun dealer mocked and feared by humans and disrespected by many mutants because of providing services to humans. He has a serious case of self-loathing.

Voice type: Any range. Has a raspy, distorted tone. Think of a hermit who has mutated horribly when you get into this character's mindset.
