Demo Cafechan's First Demo Reel - 11-21-2008, 04:44 AM

Th-this is my first time doing a true demo reel, so I wasn't really sure what all to do. I just recorded whatever came to mind. I didn't get enough emotions or range in here. >_< Ughhh. I'll do better next time. ;_;

Plus, my mic is evil and makes weird noise. =/

Re: Cafechan's First Demo Reel - 11-23-2008, 04:57 PM

Well; my computer is slow...So I haven't got the whole thing loaded yet...(in other words, I haven't heard the whole demo yet because my computer is slow and hateful).
But I'll critique what I've heard so far (I'm not critiquing the voices of the characters, I'm critiquing the demo as a whole):
You have a very cute voice; my main issue was that I felt you could've used more energy at times. There were some points (like the Honey line, for example), when I thought you imitated the original japanese on the "Haru-chan, Haru-chan!" bit; leading you to sound more energetic; then on the rest of the line you didn't have quite the same energy. Lines that didn't come from something you references as a whole, tended to not have the same energy ones you used with a reference (or prior knowledge of a character) did.
I want to know that you can create and perform as a character without that reference, and own them. I don't want to hear you imitate the japanese voice actor/actress; I want to hear your take on the character. If you're going to use well known lines in your demo (again, back to the Honey line), make sure you own the character. A lot of the time you sounded a bit lacking in confidence about what you were doing.
Nice things I heard, were that you do have a decent range, that definitely can be expanded with practice. I'd like to hear more of it in your next demo.
So overall, I'd say; work on energy and ownership of characters; for your next demo I'd like to hear more original lines. =) If you need ideas for scripting I'd be happy to help, and I'm sure others wouldn't mind giving you some tips either. For me, I've always been able to make lines sound more personal and put more into them if I script them myself; as they tend to mean more to me that way (I don't know if this will work for you, but maybe give it a shot?).
Anyway, overall you can play an impressive variety of characters, and along with expanding your range, just work on making me believe you are this character. Even if you're confident in your performance at times it doesn't sound like you are. So stay in character (even if they're shy, be strong in your portray of such a character), and make things personal; and I think you'll improve a huge amount. (Now if only the rest of the demo would load...>>'' I'm also critiquing a bit based on hearing some of the characters in your demo in your clip of Rozen Maiden...xD).
Hope this helped, and I look forward to hearing more from you! =3

Re: Cafechan's First Demo Reel - 11-24-2008, 01:59 AM

Oh, th-thank you for the detailed comment! /// I definitely feel that I lacked proper energy in this reel. I did it all in one sitting, so I got worn out and really could have stood to redo some of the lines. Next time, I should take more time!

I have trouble "owning" a character, because I am so used to how they normally sound. I guess I inadvertently end up imitating the original actors. But I will definitely work on this. Maybe doing some more original characters would be good practice...? -wonders-

Maybe doing some lines suggested by other people would be helpful, like for characters I haven't heard before, that way I'm not tempted to imitate the original actor/actress.

Something I also struggle with is that my voice is just naturally kind of weak and lacking in confidence. I have to nearly be shouting in order to be understood/heard. So I go from one extreme (people not hearing me at all) to the other (being really loud and boisterous). It's hard to get to the middle ground!

Anyway, thanks again! I knew something was off, but I just couldn't figure it out... and listening to it again, it definitely needs more confidence. D: I'll try to fix that next time.

I really like your normal voice ^_^ it's cute. But as for the demo reel, some of the voices did sound the same as other voices. They were all good, but maybe next time vary up the tones for the characters so people can get a better grasp of your range. But otherwise good job!

Y-you like my normal voice?! Ahh, thank you! /// I always think my normal voice sounds so strange... hahahaha.

Yeah, I'm already wanting to do a new reel now that I've got a better idea of what a demo reel should entail. XD Thanks for listening!

*Thumbs up*

I enjoyed this quite a bit ^-^

I didn't read the character list, soooo, yeah. I agree with the energy bit.

For example. The whole
"Get out of my room!" line. Your voice was really shakey first off and it also helps to feel angry when you say it. Of course you're an actress, but it does help to put yourself in that particular mood. That technique goes for everything, not just that one line by the way.

Good job!
