I guess the fact that it's censored, and we're not getting the real deal makes it sad. I guess it's nice that I have a company watching out for what I read...? lol~
Although, the type of editing the really bugs me, is when they edit things for no reason...Like remember when Cardcaptor Sakura aired on American TV? They edited any references to the story taking place in Japan...all Japanese letters and cultural references were snipped out...THAT'S dumb. But if Viz is gonna keep the important stuff, and take out nudity and sexual content...I won't complain. Yeah it takes away from what the author originally created, but I can see why they'd get rid of it. Violence I can't see why...I mean...some comics are violent, and that's why they're fun I don't appreciate graphic violence. Bloodless violence is actually creepy if you ask me XD (How can characters not bleed after getting shot or scraped??)
But these are my opinions, and feel free to disagree

Be happy that we are even getting all this stuff in mass quantities. I remember being so excited when I would find Dragonball Z and Inuyasha stuffed under all the Marvel and DC comics in comic book stores. It was all a really awesome treat.

Kids today are spoiled man. Effing spoiled. Complaining about something that has been happening for years. Whatever.

I wouldn't have complained if the manga wasn't previously uncensored and had a faithful translation. I've been there since day one, when VIZ was releasing the series in a monthly two-chapter format until they made the switch to Shonen Jump. When they started to censor and change things, destroying any consistency they had for the series, it's like a slap to the face to those who supported the series all these years.

It's also a complete waste of time to learn japanese to just read manga/watch anime. *COUGH*Likemecomplaining*COUGH*

EDIT: @enchantma: I remember that horrible dub. 4Kids is doing the exact same thing to all their other dubbed anime as well.

I was a little irritated when they censored Saikano somewhat as well.I think they should have just left it the way it was. They already put it behind a plastic wrap, so...I enjoyed the story, but I couldn't figure out the first time why some of the artwork was faded and whatnot. xD And now I know. I know I loved that manga, I just wish they left it to how the author made it. Ah..USA and it's pros and cons...

This is a little off topic, but since I saw a lot of Naruto rants...
VIZ is releasing the first season as a boxed set,UNCUT, and BILINGUIAL WITH SUBTITLES. so, hopefully everyone is happy with that. I still like Naruto reguardless...I just wonder after that epsiode with Sakura getting punched in the head from a guy, (nonstop for 5 minutes, with random flashbacks), would parents freak out and still complain? Who knows..I wonder if they were complaining about DBZ when that was on CN. And I like the dubbing anyway.

I just hope they don't censor my baby (...er, Monster)...

They wouldn't have any reason to. Right?

Yeah, I seem to vaguely remember one of my Dragonball Z volumes being censored to not show Gohan's wee-wee, and yet in the Dragonball ones I have, you can see Goku's fully. At least three times. o__o Unless that's how it originally was.

Re: Dragon Ball -Yeah there's definatly lots of nekkid Goku so far the UK prints seem to be the old editions -yay! We haven't got to Z yet so I can't tell you how much is censored.

Dr Slump has had a lot of similar edits though thankfully so far nothing too major. What I think is really annoying is changing things for no real reason so they effect the story -or dumb it down.
I'm sure I've seen cartoons with " Satan" himself in, so I don't see what's so offensive about a character who isn't the devil being called Mr Satan. Total humour failure is what. We all want a thousand kids chanting " Satan Satan Satan." ;3

Apparently, Viz has managed to get themselves into even more hot water with the fans, after editing a panel of the 'Fullmetal Alchemist' manga, as shown here.

I can actually understand certain edits, such as this one. It may not bother most, but imagine the protest they might get from others who wouldn't take the crucifix thing so lightly. There's actually a group that searches for things like this and sends the company hate mail. I've heard of them overloading e-mails or whatnot because of stuff like this.

Sometimes I can understand why they edit, even if I wish they hadn't. (Other times, I just don't get it though.) When American companies put out something that a great deal of the populace finds unacceptable, the COMPANY is who has to face the consequences, not the readers. We get to sit back and just hear about it, which is quite different. They get in trouble, and so does their bread and butter.

When the original creator is against it, I can see getting uptight about it. But when they don't care and/or approve? Seems rather silly. Aren't they able to negotiate in the contract whether or not they want it left untouched? Sometimes the creator gets screwed, but usually agreements are made concerning editing.

Basically, companies do what they think will get them a larger audience. Censoring and Americanizing a series will sometimes bring in non-anime fans. I think we've all heard the story about the anime fan who was introduced to it thanks to the butched Sailor Moon dub.

It's really about covering for themselves and making the most money. It also depends on who gets the rights to the translation.
