  1. #1 Annoying Hissing Noise When recording
I use a SHUR KSM 32 condenser microphone that was connected to my PC via a USB interface. After switching to my laptop I noticed a really annoying background hiss that would undermine the quality of my recordings. First I went into sound settings and turned the levels down to the single digits and while it kinda curbed the hiss, it was there and my base recordings suffered as now they sounded way softer.

Fed up with my circumstances I went and bought an external USB sound card thinking if I bypass the laptop's noisy sound card I can get some results. Sadly the hiss returned as if nothing changed

It could be a long list of culprits, but here's a few things to get you started.

Wow...I made a noobie mistake. Thanks for the help. I just noticed on my sound board my master audio sliders were cranked up to max hence why the noise was their since the gain was so high....everything is crystal now.

Hey there, i listened to ur ramble, and i could barely even hear youuu.
so i didn't hear any hissing, but I'm going to give u one option that i THIIIINK it could be.

when i plug in my ipod and charge it at the same time in my car.. it makes a weird noise that is SUPPPER annoying, its because its playing sound while being charged. Maybe this is happening with you?

    ~_.Holy bleep I need a demo reel._~

If you have a two-prong power cord, pull it out, flip it, and put it back in the socket. This helped me out for some reason. I got this advice from an Audacity forum.

Back again as the problem appears to be reoccurring in an area I'm not considering.

Before I realized I can lower the hiss by just lowering the master audio slider in my soundboard however the problem is that once I raise the volume to hear myself the hiss is back to its annoying self. Figuring it's my laptop soundcard, I snagged myself an external soundblaster pro soundcard (nothing too crazy but reliable). Even after disabling my onboard sound card. I'm still getting the same levels of hiss.

Anything else I should be looking into? I know I SOUND great but everything else around the recording just distracts from it.
