  1. #1 Boy Voices?
I have a LOT of trouble creating a convincing boy voice, which REALLY frustrates me because I think I have the right voice type to do one. I'm not sure of the elements that go into a boy voice.

So, what do you do to your voice to sound like a boy?

    Thank you!

I'm not sure what you mean by having the right type of voice to do boy voices.. I've heard women of all sorts of different natural voice qualities pull off convincing boy voices.

But anyway.. it all really depends on what type of boy voice you want to pull off as there are many different types that one might be able to do. For starters, you might want to practice placing your voice in a different part of your throat. For me, the best place for my voice to be is in the waaaay bottom back part. Also, know how to put gravel in your voice usually helps. I guess you can do that by practicing a kind of monstery voices that make your voice have a sort of growling tone to it.

..sorry if you don't understand what I mean. It's really hard to describe how to create boy voices. Honestly, it's something that comes with a lot of practice. Your best bet is to listen to other women doing boy voices and try to mimic those the best you can until you get it down.

I second what Erica said, I think any girl can do her own version of a boy voice. The 2 main boy voices I can pull off:

"Really young boy": For this, imagine doing a kawaii voice, but just pitch it lower.
"Teen boy": When I speak normally, it comes out smoothly, with no tension in the vocal chords. When I'm trying to pull off this 'Ash Ketchum' type voice, I constrict my vocal chords and really try to force the flow through tensed muscles (which helps to add a gravelly effect). This one does dry out my voice after a while.

Hm... I think all my preconceptions of boy voices were wrong XD I'll have to keep this in mind. Thank you!

Worked for Ash Ketchum for a decade...I guess you can always aim for the young kid rather than like the adolescent boy, I mean, look at Tommy Pickles, Ash Ketchum and Izzy (Digimon)...I guess it's not really how you sound, just how good you can bring the character out because their are a lot of feminine sounding guys in most anime now...

That's true! Unfortunately, my voice stills sounds way too girly whenever I try to do a male voice (I have the same question as RobotButterfly!). I was wondering, if it's not too much trouble for anyone, could someone who is able to do a male voice, produce a short audio clip of how they go from their normal voice to a boy's one?

Also, are there any specific warm up exercises people do to make their voice more boyish?

    Thanks!!
