No Rest for the Wicked is an online fantasy manga about a princess named November who, ever since the moon disappeared, has been unable to sleep. She is prompted to go on a journey to find the missing moon to finally rest peacefully, and on the way meets a plethora of characters from the fairy tales of old, including Perrault familiar as the "Puss in Boots", and a dark, mysterious young woman known only as Red faintly recognizable as the traumatized girl from "Little Red Riding Hood". The story and art has a old-fashioned baroque feel, and yet has a uniquely modern tone as well as its own light, humorous moments.
NOTE: This webcomic, while having almost no blood or gore and pretty much no coarse language, contains intense scenes of violence of a PG-13 rated nature, as well as possibly disturbing images or scenarios (think Brothers Grimm fairy tales uncensored). If you're worried about this, I encourage you to peek through the webcomic (especially in the latter half of chapter 3) and see if it's all right with you; in the worst case, if you believe the subject matter will be upsetting to you (though that's unlikely), please refrain from auditioning.
A sneak peek of the WIP visuals is here:
If you'd like to see more, {additional preview clips are posted here}.
Deadline: Saturday, May 19, 11:59pm PST
To Audition:
- Your microphone should be clear and reasonably noise-free, without clicks or puffs. I will let you know if your mic quality is a problem so you can correct the issue if possible, because a poor mic will prevent you from getting a part.
- Record in either 44100hz Mono, MP3 or OGG. As you need to be able to save in either one of those file types for production, I can't accept WAV for auditions.
- One take of each line is sufficient (lines in separate files), but if you'd like to include more takes, do so in the same file, and please no more than three.
- Save lines as Character Name_linenumber_VAAusername.ogg/mp3 (e.g. Jakob's Mother_1_Tomoyo Ichijouji.ogg)
- You don't have to zip them, but if you do, title the zip VAAUsername_NoRestaud.zip
- Include your demo reel (attached or linked), if you have one.
- Send your auditions to tomoyoichijouji@hotmail.com, e-mail subject as No Rest Auditions from VAAUsername (e.g. No Rest Auditions from Tomoyo Ichijouji); if the e-mail you'd like me to use is different than the one you're using, let me know.
-I am willing to do critiques if requested; this may even boost your audition if you show you can respond to direction (note that they'll be geared toward how you can improve your auditions rather than as teaching material, so I'll remark on whether the pitch is where I want it, or the vocal texture, as well as line delivery). Either say so in your audition e-mail, in a subsequent e-mail, or on this thread. I also gladly accept redos, and in fact I'm hoping to hear them if I do a critique for you. I will do a maximum of two critiques on someone's auditions for this project (so that means I'll do a critique on your 1st redoes if you wish); after that, it's at my discretion if I continue to critique or not.No longer doing critiques because of proximity to deadline, my apologies!
- If it's clear that you neglected to take note of these instructions, you need to resend them in properly or I can't count your auditions.
Notes about my casting and producing practices:
- How well you can act matters as much as, perhaps even more than, voice matching for me. If in doubt, feel free to request a critique and I'll let you know what I'm looking for in that regard.
- If I don't find appropriate VAs from the number of auditions I receive, I will either scout, multi-cast, or self-cast as needed.
- After the posted deadline, I'll close auditions and see if I can cast any characters or if I'll need to extend, so I may partially cast.
- If you get cast, upon giving out the script I will let you know in detail what my procedures for deadlines and recasting are, and by remaining in the production without asking to be recast, I assume you will agree to and abide by them without issue. If you'd like to know what they are (don't worry, they're nothing strange), just ask.

There weren't that many auditions this time around for recasts, so I ended up needing to still scout a number of the characters I got auditions for. Still, I found a few good and fitting VAs for some characters, and I only really need to scout one of them, which was about as good as I could hope for in these quieter times at the VAA XD;; (The reason some are "tentatively self-cast" is that these characters show up in later chapters and thus I don't have to scout yet, as well as me having a voice I can make for those characters that I find acceptable. Also, I like not having these big gaping blanks on my cast list when I don't need to XP )
Please confirm that you accept each of your roles, either on this thread or by e-mail. I will wait until Saturday, May 26 for confirmations; if I still haven't heard from you after that date, I will proceed to scout/self-cast.
However, if you confirm earlier, I may get you your script early too; I'm a bit unorthodox in that my scheduling for lines is more individualized. So, I don't have to wait for everyone else before getting you started if you're ready. =3

Audition Page notes:
- The @ symbol at the end of each line is a link to the line's reference page for clearer context. (@)
- Number of lines refers to the amount of lines (and thus workload) that each character entails; in brackets it says what chapter [ch#] or interlude [int#] the lines are in. Currently the comic consists of four chapters and three interludes, with an unfinished fifth chapter now in the works. Some characters therefore may appear again in future chapters; though, production of chapters beyond the 3rd interlude isn't confirmed at this point. (Want to get the ones that are there done first, lol)
- Save for November's, ages are approximate and garnered purely from their appearance, context, and demeanor.
- This is a recast audition; however, the roles up for audition, with the exceptions of November and Clare, have not been recorded by the previous VA, so have no worry about trying to match the previous voicework for Red, Young Red, and Klaus.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
NOVEMBER
Age: 16
Bio: A princess who has had chronic insomnia ever since the moon disappeared, and is on a journey to find the moon to regain her ability to sleep. Polite and proper, she's been sheltered due to her royal upbringing and thus comes off as naive and self-centered at times.
Number of lines: [ch1] 135; [ch2] 98; [ch3] 99; [ch4] 57; [int3] 18 (yes she has a LOT of lines, be warned)
Voice type: Medium-high; proper and forthright
Note: November has been previously voiced for up to the whole 1st chapter, so yes you will be filling in someone else's shoes in this case (though there is the remote possibility that the new VA might redo ch1 lines, which would be no small undertaking as you can see from the line count up there). As I believe I have all of ch 1 voiced, ch 2 can start fresh with another VA, so don't worry too much about sounding just like the previous VA; just think of it like, would you be convinced that they were the same character from one chapter to the other? Something like that. To hear what the first November sounded like, her voice is used in the two preview clips above.
Line 1: [pensively] The Moon's task was to bear her lantern across the sky, night after night, only taking her natural rest once every month. And I wonder if, one such night, the moon lay down to rest...and simply decided that it wasn't worth it to get up again. (@)
Line 2: [scared to death of a dead mouse] GYAAAAAAAAAH!! (@)
Line 3: [quietly terrified] ...Th-there's something in this bed...or there was...something like...death... (@)
Line 4: [commandingly, then meekly] You brute! Put him down at once!! ...If you don't mind! (@)
Line 5: [aggrieved] --Gretel is dead...!! You can't--[struggles against being held]...gnnn...taking more children won't bring your own back-- (@)
RED
Age: mid to late teens
Bio: Red has been living in the woods by herself for some time, and is known to the outside world as a mysterious, dark figure in a red cloak. She is generally reserved and unsociable, but when inclined she can become intensely threatening.
Number of lines: [ch1] 4; [ch2] 32; [ch3] 19; [ch4] 9 (so few lines, considering she's a lead; it's just cause she hardly talks, LOL)
Voice type: Medium/Medium-low; slightly raspy, ominous and forbidding without sounding too old
Line 1: [with dark remembrance, then demanding almost angrily] That's right...I burned the old bedclothes, didn't I...? ...Aired out the old mattress...till even I couldn't smell the death anymore...so how. did. you. KNOW? (@)
Line 2: [intensely] Three died, in that bed. I was one of them. (@)
Line 3: [defiantly] Hahh. If I were the sort to stay on the path...I wouldn't be here today. (@)
Line 4: [retorting] Don't lump me in with you, hairball. (@)
Line 5: [grinning eerily] What's it to be, lambs? Stay with Uncle Fuzzylumps...or auntie Red? (@)
YOUNG RED
Age: early teens
Bio: This is Red when she was several years younger, and more recognizable as her fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" counterpart.
Number of lines: [ch4] 14
Voice type: Medium-high; chipper, perceptive
Line 1: [teasing, yet sympathetic] You're not still in bed?? Yesterday you said you were feeling better... (@)
Line 2: [perturbed] ...I-I have to go. Really. (@)
Line 3: [warily] He's hidden her somewhere in the house...where? Under the bed, maybe? (@)
CLARE
Age: late 20s to early 30s
Bio: Clare is a woman with a secretive past. She has a serene but rueful air to her, regretful with an old bitterness, evidenced by the silver hands given to her by her husband in replacement of the hands that her own father cut off during her childhood.
Number of lines:[ch3] 63;[ch4] 64
Voice type: Medium; gentle and melancholy
Note: Clare has been previously voiced for the 3rd chapter, so yes you will be filling in someone else's shoes in this case. Since ch 3 is completely voiced (which is her first appearance), ch 4 can start fresh with another VA, so don't worry too much about sounding just like the previous VA; just think of it like, would you be convinced that they were the same character from one chapter to the other? Something like that. To hear what the first Clare sounded like, {click here for a streamable vocal sample reel}.
Line 1: [grimly, bitterly] My mother wept and wept when she learned what he'd done...But they never tried to return the money. And when the Devil told him to chop off my hands...my father did not refuse. (@)
Line 2: [morbidly humorous about her own execution] ...Well, I have an early appointment tomorrow, but...you could pass by afterwards and see if I feel more talkative... (@)
Line 3: [solemn, resolved] ...Do you know...the day I left them, I swore an oath...that I would not starve, nor freeze, nor be killed by wild beasts, nor anything else. No matter what it took...I would live on. (@)
Line 4: [with a sad smile] You mustn't. I'm a wicked woman. A kind one would not spend years hating her own parents...only to turn out no different from them. (@)
Line 5: [conversationally] You want to know what I hope to get out of helping that girl, November. Fair question. It's difficult to explain...well, not "difficult", but... (@)
KLAUS
Age: preteens
Bio: The brother of Anna and the child of a poor woodcutter, Klaus finds himself a prisoner of the witch in the woods, who took the two children in after they had gotten lost.
Number of lines: [ch3] 23
Voice type: Medium-high; spunky and rebellious
Line 1: [trying to be scary while being scared himself] N-no...I mean, noooOooOooOoo. There's nooOoOoO one HEEEEERE...'cept for us SKELETONS!!!! WOOOoooOOOoooOooo... (@)
Line 2: [bickering] That's what you said about the last loony old bat we ran into. (@)
Line 3: [uneasy] ...That's what the old lady calls me... (@)
