I noticed recently that a lot of people pronounce the "tr" sound like "chr" (as in truly). Is that something to minimize to make the word clearer or is it not a big deal? Is it some kind of regional thing or universal?

To me, I think it's a regional thing, in my area, it's how it's always been pronounced, whether it's the right or wrong way I'm not sure, but, it doesn't seem to become an issue unless otherwise notified.
