Is Clannad and Clannad after story the Best anime ever?

Best anime ever? Well I don't think anyone could actually pinpoint what the best anime is. Really it's all based on personal opinion. You think Clannad and Clannad AS are the best anime out there. And that's fine that's your opinion. Some people might say K-ON! is the greatest anime, and some might say Buso Renkin. Like I said it boils down to personal opinion. Now what makes Clannad a good show? Well the reason why I think it's a good show is because it has well fleshed out characters, the comedy is perfect in the right places, they make you care about the characters so when the sad scenes turn up they really get to you and, this will be one of my personal favourites, OHMIGOD THE SOUNDTRACK. I have listened to the Clannad soundtrack so many times. I have actually thrown money at my computer screen shouting "Take it! Take my damn money!" And the best part is I still have that money.

My only complaint with Clannad:

Fuko and her stupid arc. That is all.

AFTER STORY SPOILERS:

What makes it so great is that it soooooo meaninglessly set the story up to troll the audience in the last (proper) episode and tell you that your emotions were kind of pointless as empathy is supposed to be reserved for those who actually *lost* something.

No, my friend; we do not share the same opinion. The anime had a trophy, carried it all the way next to the finish line, stopped right next to it, threw it to the side, ran back, picked up a pistol it saw laying around, and shot its own foot. That is the ending and almost the entire 2nd season in a nutshell....for me.

My only complaint with Clannad:

Aw, Fuko was my favourite along with Yukine :< I loved her story. I hated that Tomoyo got her own OVA and then her own game. She didn't even come across as more than a supporting character to me so Youhei had someone to fight.

As for it being the best anime never...Short answer: No. It was a good anime but definetely not the best. I've seen much better and out of the animated Key titles, Kanon is my favourite.

While Trinity makes a good point about the ending of After Story, it does make sense in the context of the original game in which the anime (and After Story) was based off of.

See, after you get the proper ending in each path (which the anime does a great job of showing most of the game's content, and what they couldn't show they did in the form of separate episodes), you got a ball of light, which is connected to the whole alternate world thing. Once you have enough, it can perform a miracle. The whole part with the ending of After Story is the culmination of all that into granting a miracle, in this case, preventing the tragedy from happening.

The anime REALLY drops the ball on explaining this, and it does indeed feel like a cop-out happy ending. But if you've played the original game all the way through, it does make sense and actually does a good job of rewarding the player for their hard work completing the game in its entirety.

It is really tough to convey a decent ending with a visual novel adaptation such as this without playing favorites.

In my opinion, definitely not the best. I dislike Clannad. It's just so mainstream and a lot of people classify it as "the best anime ever" when there's much better animes out there. All the fandubs and casting threads of it just make me more annoyed at it. But you know, people have their opinions. I did like the opening and ending songs and the Tomoyo OVA episode (because she was the only character I liked).
