Seriously guy, getting to know the appearances of the regular voice actors could help with that nervousness of everyone knowing each other. Not just amateurs get called in, either -- could be the people auditioning have worked for FUNimation before, but they do have to audition again for any role.

Also, could have been a fan who had met Chris at a con, or was just making small talk because they recognized him...

It takes a long long time to make this a career. Of all people I wouldn't say that to Seymour, as he is definitely going places with voice acting. I'm sure you didn't mean it but it sounded like you questioned his passion for it, which would be insane lol. You really do have to look at gigs as a job, because that's what they are. At least when you get into the professional world. Seymour is completely right, just sayin'

IF you are on the mailing list, they open auditions once every 6 months. If you are on that list they have to give you a shot to try. Hell, I am pretty sure when they start thinking the roles they already know who they have in mind to do the voice.

Im so glad I found this thread. A friend of mine is auditioning and has little to next to none, va experience. Dont get me wrong, they are great at acting and diffferent voices and I hope the very best! But Im worried since this person has only recorded lines once, and it was three lines. This person (notice Im leaving out gender and names? Lol I dont want them to get in trouble for them telling me about this audition) is already counting themselves as cast since few have confirmed they are auditioning. They are ready to quit thier job (like they did college) to move there and think they are already cast and talk about it constantly (only to me and thier ride). But they wont research about any past audition. I just want to help them for thier audition, so this helps so I can tell them what others had happen.

Also, random question I hope somone can answer, I emailed to get on their list and they emailed me back the next day asking for my phone number (This was in March). The next day my friend did too. This friend has already been contacted about open calls, but I havent recieved anything. I re-emailed asking to be on the list thursday and havent heard anything back. I just want to know Im on the list, how long did it take anyone else to get an email reply?

I really hope I didnt say anything to get in trouble or comprimise. I left out really all information didnt I? O.o Idk

Only a few have confirmed they are auditioning? Is there a list somewhere I haven't seen, or is it just talking with your circle of friends, or something else? Because auditions at FUNi draw several hundred people. I haven't seen a thread here that gets half that. But let's say your friend does get a role. It'll be over in a few months (at the most), with no guarantee of ever getting work again. And unless this character really, really, REALLY likes to talk, it definitely won't be enough to cover living expenses. Far be it from me to discourage someone from moving to the area to pursue voice acting. In fact, I would be hypocritical to do so. But I dearly hope your friend has a place to stay (that can be utilized for years to come - NOT a crash pad), some sort of job opportunity, and perhaps savings meant for this very occasion. In fact, my advice to anyone moving anywhere to get voiceover work is simply to behave as if you won't be getting any voiceover work when you plan your move.

I know nothing about the open call list, so I'm afraid I can't help you there. D:

Yeah, not to mention even if you get a continous gig VAing for Funi/any other company, multiple VA's have stated that it doesn't pay for itself. You'd probably need to mix it up with various jobs.

Let's go with best case scenario and say they get cast as the lead character. They would need to:

    1) Move. The cheapest apartments around will cost about $500, plus deposit on a good day.
    2) They'll need to have a car to get to FUNi, because Texas has a severe lack of public transportation.
    3) Buy groceries and other living expenses.

Let's say they make enough to pay for a month of living (really, really, really unlikely as FUNi pays under scale). When they are done with the show, that's it. No more work until their next show, which could be months later.
Voice actors either have another job, or they do voice acting full time, meaning, they do ALL kinds of voice over: commercials, industrials, e-learning, web ads, promos, video games, etc.
Not to discourage your friend, but they definitely need to be prepared with a living situation, a job, and/or savings before making the move.

For the open calls, it's entirely dependent on how much free time the directors have as to how many people they call in, or if they do it at all. They will call in people with voices that they are currently in need of. So, even if someone gets called in quickly, you may not be called in until much later. Because of the volume of submissions they get, you will not always get a reply. I've gotten maybe two replies ever, but they always take care of it, so they don't ignore them.

Thank you guys for all you help. My friend said its an invitation only audition and that they were high up on the list? Because of their education. (however, they droped out this past semester and arnt going back to college)
As for the email part, I finally got a short response after I resent all my files and information. Which is interesting since I didnt give my phone number which I heard was needed.
Ill pass the information on to my friend. I just convinced them last night to actually look up peoples past auditions, at least to know what to expect. They say they will let me know how it goes at their audition.
And the closest relative they have is in Houston, which they are convinced is only an hour drive from Dallas (Which isnt how I remembered it when we went there last summer for a road trip) but who knows. They are convinced they are auditioning for the main characters of the show, and while they maybe, I have my doubts.... I just figured they would have more well known voice actors in mind for those roles.
