‘The Last Person in This Place’, is a comedy-drama skit which juxtaposes the fall of Myspace & the current position of Facebook; against a post-apocalyptic landscape taken from ‘I Am Legend’ by Richard Matheson. The piece is around 8-9 minutes long and features two characters.
Plot
Beth, a native of the place called ‘FaceBook’ has travelled across the badlands to the destroyed civilisation of 'MySpace'. She fears that the disaster that consumed this godforsaken place has started to infest FaceBook, and she wants to know if there is a cure. She quickly meets ‘The Stranger’; who helps protect her against the SpamMonsters which room the land. However, The Stranger knows much more than he will admit, and has some strong advice which he hopes Beth will heed.
Charectes
Beth. Female. Age 18-30. A young native of FaceBook. She is the only person who sees the oncoming storm, despite everyone saying that what happened at Myspace could never happen at FaceBook. She’s brave & strong and confirms to the fantasy archetype of the lowly person who must leave the village to save it.
The Stranger. Male. Age 20-40. A gruff grizzled survivor. Who roams the land of MySpace with his shotgun, trying to save whoever he can and killing the SpamMonsters. He is somebody who helped build the city and feels he has now little left to live for. He confirms to the lonely post-apocalyptic wanderer, ala ‘Mad Max’
Style
Although I started writing this as a comedy, I quickly felt it worked better as a drama with a silly comedic device at its heart. So I’d like the two actors to play this quite dramatically. I don't mind too much what accent is used as long as it fits the character. I’ve recorded a demo of the work myself, so you can have a good idea of what it will sound like and how you should play it. As with all the work I create, it’s important that you’ve got a good microphone setup and can record something of high quality. As this work will be going out on my radio show, podcast and internet radio station (cornucopia-radio.co.uk)
