  1. #1 General starting tips?
I really want to do some voice acting, and looking around the site a bit I'm finding a lot of projects I'd love to work on. There's jsut a few problems, and maybe you can help me out.

First off, I don't have a mic, and I have no idea what kind I need, or if there's other things I'll need to buy with it. Somewhere I have a really old computer mic, but I don't think it's going to produce great audio. I'm pretty sure I need some program on the computer to record and save lines too...

Also...Well, if I do get all of this and try out voice acting, it needs to be a secret... my mother doesn't want me to be a voice actor, says it's not a 'practicle career' and all that...

So, if you have any tips for an absolute beginner, PLEASE share...

You may want to check some of the stickies in the forum. A lot of your questions have been asked by many others before, so the answer is out there-- you just have to look

There are many good microphones out there at all different price ranges which are all reviewed on http://voiceactingalliance.com/board...-review-thread
even if you have a headset with a mic that you use for online gaming, it can work, obv not best quality but its a start.
buy or make a popshield - its easy to make - simpley get a £1 embroidery hoop which you can pick up from any pound store or charity shop and a pair of tights, wrap tightly round and seal - or improvise which i had to do and wrap them round a coathanger once. it stops any "plosive sounds" which can disrupt audio.

as for your mother, we all have times when we need to do things alone, i wouldnt go nuts on projects until you know when you can do the work. put in for projects you are interested in and know you can do. At times, some shouting is needed, so find a time when your mum is out. or just let her hear - its always good to have someone to bounce your voices or samples off of! dont be embaraced! obviously apply for ones which you know you can be able to do - bailing out of it once cast isnt good for you or the project.

other than that, the link above is really helpful with lots of good advice for beginners and experienced

    good luck x
