I don't think it's completely necessary because normally a demo reel is just a voice, but feel free to do it if you want.

As far as content goes, would it be safe to say that it is preferred you use more original voices for a demo reel?

Notes from when I talked to Michelle Knots at Connecticon 2008:
(a lot of this has been said before, but it doesn't hurt to restate)

    Demo CDs
-Make no track (ie commercial, character, etc.) longer than 60 seconds
-Have a great graphic on the cover of your jewel case
-Use your own voice for your commercial track
-Try to memorize the lines so it sounds more natural, instead of like you're reading
-Don't mimic other voices, find something uniquely you
    -Put your best voices first

    VAing in general
    -Take improvisation classes/workshops
-When sending your demo CD and resume out, if a name is provided address the letter to that person, not the company in general
-For auditions check the Ross Reports and Backstage.com
I regret to say that save for a few select projects I am already cast in, I am no longer participating in anything involved with VAA. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

So I'm still incredibly confused and nervous about making a demo reel :/ As far as the timing, most characters I've ever played or auditioned for have serious or slower lines :/ And what do i do for lines? Make them up or use lines from shows?

This is great I was planning to make a demo reel, the only thing I'm having trouble figuring out is background music. I want to make a good one with music to fit the mood, but I'm not sure where to start in that department. And also how to edit it, can I just use windows movie maker?
