We spend way too much time funding and fighting wars instead of funding and researching ways of helping people.

Well that too! If we stopped fighting/funding wars we'd have PLENTY of money to help the environment, research cures for diseases, and all kinds of things that would help humanity.

Reliance on the Internet and cell phones. It's getting to the point where both should be considered a vice more than a tool.

That's why I believe the blackout in New England was probably a good thing for college students like me (but not so good for people w/o heat and such). I caught myself being irritated at the lack of electricity, phone service, internet, hot food/drink, and lighting for a couple days, but I thought it was a good experience to realize just how dependent we are on these things. Oh, it's also making us lazier and whinier. xD

But no, that's a 1st world problem. For me, the biggest global problem is hunger and overall poverty (typical answer, I know). I do this too, but how can we complain so much over things that aren't working out in our society when death and neglect are plaguing other parts of the world? Oh, and we're also killing the environment/wasting water and energy/using up resources. SO MUCH IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD. xDD

I think the biggest problem is pride and apathy.

Apathy toward innovation- lack of motivation. The US only made it to the moon because the Russians were beating them. (The Space Race) They had a ton of pride, and only their pride helped them and gave them the drive to advance.
Plus, if you look at the soon-to-be adults of the world... There's little to no drive. Other people around my age are only conserned about their social lives: Where's the next party or who's breaking up with who. I'm in Jounalism at my school, and I wanted to take a poll on how many people even knew about the Occupy Wallstreet protests in New York. 15 out of 500 heard about it. 5 out of those 15 could give information about it.

Necroposting this thing because it's my pet peeve...

Entitlement. People pretending to be something they're not, instead of learning to do or actually becoming that thing. Counting their self worth by the amount of money they earn, the house they live in, or the car they drive, when they don't have any redeeming social values or original thoughts in their heads. Have a discussion with these guys and your BS meter will go off on the second line that comes out of the person's mouth. Especially if it's something you have knowledge of or are passionate about. People will MAKE STUFF UP to sound smart.

"DSLR cameras have come a long way, you can put prime lenses on them and shoot video that looks like film."
"Yeah, but that won't work most of the time"
"Uhhh, there are a ton of indie films out there right now that were shot entirely on Canon T2is."
"No, those are shot on film still"
"Crank 2 was shot with DSLR and even some consumer handheld HD cameras like the Vixia."
"No, DSLR does not shoot video that's good enough quality to use for a movie."
"Tell that to Phillip Bloom, or go to Sundance."
    "What's Sundance?"

    Two words: Fucking corporations.

Why? Because you eat off the palm of their hand and you love it. That is the problem.

Something we were discussing in a recent lecture for one of my Management classes is lack of conscientiousness, or more accurately, lack of accountability. And in a more specific sense, this is something I've noticed a lot here as well (not pointing the finger at anyone in particular, though), where it feels like some people have absolutely no regard for the commitment they make (and willingly so) to their projects. My theory is that this phenomenon has been exacerbated by the proliferation of the internet. Because you get to do pretty much everything anonymously over the internet, there's no fear of consequences if you mess up. Your name (at least your real name) isn't behind your actions, so people seem to be unconcerned about behaving irresponsibly since there's no way to trace it back to them. I've always believed that the internet is supposed to make our interactions with other people more lifelike. That is, we are supposed to be interacting with others, even if they are on the other end of the world, in exactly the same way we would interact with our next-door neighbors. That's supposed to be the endgame of all these technological advances. But the way it seems right now, we're taking advantage of this anonymity and we're treating others over the internet in ways we would never do to those in our everyday lives.
