Sometimes the serial/model # is on the mic, other times it's on the manual/package it came in. A pic couldn't hurt.

Let us know how you're connecting it to your comp and we might be able to narrow it down a little. Are you going through a preamp or mixing board? Which model(s)?
So you're not running it through a preamp or a mixer (with built in preamp) first? If not, that's your issue. You'll need a preamp between your mic and your comp. Something like this would work:

I'm curious why I need this now? Should I have gotten this from the start with my mic?
Well in most cases you can't connect an XLR type mic to a computer unless it has an XLR input on it (which most don't). The preamp is an interface that allows it to connect properly, as well as can help with leveling the sound. So yeah, you should have probably gotten one when you got that mic.
