Obsessions are obsessions. It's their life. Let them do whatever they wish to with it. [/repeating what other's are saying orz;]

    Admin step in.

One warning for the entire thread guys. Please, keep the topic on track, no personal attacks or its getting locked and warnings issued to those involved. Thanks.

I went to high school with a guy who claimed he was a Saiyan. Now, I knew it was highly unlikely that he was a being from a dead world, or that he had the potential to magically-induce his hair to spike in golden hues while making strangely constipated noises. But I admit, it amused me and I happily listened to his claims that he could launch ki blasts with his mind. He explained to me that the ki blasts were invisible, just like lazers, because they were pure energy. He demonstrated this talent for me once before and I must confess, the flower he was aiming for, did, in fact, appeaar to move. Whether this was due to his ki blast, or the subtle influence of the wind, who can tell? It made him happy and his happiness fed my amusement.

I looked this guy up on Facebook not too long ago, likeable guy really. He seems to no longer claim to be from an alien race. Whether he's accepted his human origin, or he's hiding his true identity, I'll probably never know. More than likely though, he got over his Saiyan phase and moved on to other interests.

On a personal level, for several years, anime, manga, and other aspects of Japanese culture influenced my life and artistic style to the point that I seriously considered comic book art as my future career. A great argument could be made that anime influenced me to pursue voiceover as my career of choice. The anime phase lasted several years and while I have not completely grown out of my love of anime/manga, its markedly less promiment, voiceover is still my chosen career, but anime has very little, if anything, to do with it anymore on a professional level. Before I fell in love with anime, I wanted to be a pro wrestler.I'm super excited for the chance to have Bret Hart sign my copy of his book this Saturday at Borders at Penn Station And in my heart of hearts, I still have a desire to one day grow up and become Batman.

I'm trying to think of a way to make this a constructive discussion, since I think we already have a 'How has anime affected your life?' thread (but if we don't, here it goes!).

In terms of over-obsessions to anything, my sister read- and watched- Twilight bootleg online multiple times within the course of a week, claiming it was "SOOOO GOOD", although I'm pretty sure the rest of the Twilight faniverse did much of the same. And people have broken up with their boyfriends over it. And it's probably broken up families, too. Damn you, Stephanie Meyer.

I don't get this thread. Anime Over-Obsession isn't the worst case of Over-Obsession, though still pretty bad and may need some sort of rehab. It's more like some people shouldn't really watch or play some sort of media because their mind can't comprehend that it is fiction, like some 9-year old kid falling to his death from a building because he saw Jeff Hardy do his signature Swanton Bomb when he played one of the WWE Smackdown vs RAW games (but mainly it was a parent's fault for not being there at home to watch over the kid).
It's what i'm gathering from this thread, the point of some people's not comprehending fictional media.

I used to have an obsession with animation and games during my childhood, but I grew out of it...or more accurately, I realised more that though I love both, there is more in life than my two favourite things. Lately people say I have an obsession with booze......let them think what they want.

These people aren't really a problem. They want to live in their own fantasy world, which is fine with me. I know many people who basically feed off of anime and manga for their life. I mean it can get annoying when they try to speak to me in half Japanese/half English sentences, but whatever, it's what they wanna do.
To be honest, who doesn't want to live in their own world of whatever they enjoy? Let people do what they want, they aren't hurting anyone.
...And if you think about it, would you rather these people be doing Heroine 10 times a day or live off of anime/manga. I'd pick the latter.

Thanks to Raizuto for the Signature!

They're called nerds. They are social miscreants who have no other way of expressing their self-loathing than through weekend trips to MisfitCon or by papering their bedroom walls and the outside of their car and also their desk at work with wallscrolls.

People are stupid. All of them. Live your life and move on while snickering to your friends about the fact that they are literally wearing a fox tail to the grocery store.

I hate the proliferation of the term "weeaboo." 4chan took a perfectly good PBF comic and, like they do with most good things, completely ruined it. Thanks, idiots.
Because I'll be pulverizing you sometime over the weekend.

And the cleaning lady... cleans up... dust. She dusts. And she has weekends off, so... Monday. Right?

I often frequent a community that appears to have this problem. I do my best to navigate around it, but it's become more and more difficult as time has gone by.

Those people are wackos. All they talk about is voice acting. That's, like, a serious problem.

I find the over-obsession to be amusing more than annoying myself. Though, I admit, It's a little hypocritical as I definitely had my super Anime phase , but here I am -full cosplay- at a convention and seeing people try to imitate classic anime expressions...me and my friends always turn to each other and laugh.

Obsessions tend to be temporary and, like Matt, my 'obsession' with Anime and Manga has also faded over the last couple years. It's not to say I don't enjoy the medium, but my interest has shifted toward stories that interest me...and not so much the mindset of: 'if it's anime it's amazing.' Because, as we all should know...that's not true.
