Sick of MKVs, MP4s, and other types of files that aren't very usable in most video editing programs? Tired of Virtual Dub crashing on you or other programs like "ALL to AVI" just aren't cutting it for you when you need to make a raw file? Well then I'm here to help you!

Click images to see full size.

1] Go download Format Factory. It's free.
    http://www.formatoz.com/

2] Make sure to have the episode you want (can be any format)

3] Open up Format Factory, and on the sidebar you'll see many different video type options. I usually use "All to AVI".

4] After clicking the format type hit "Add File" and choose the file you want to modify. I'll be using a raw of Fairy Tail 15 in MP4 format.

5] Next you'll want to click on the "Output Settings" tab, and get ready to have the real fun!

In the output settings you'll see a list of a lot of different things that can be used to modify the file. I'm only gonna focus on a few of them which I use but you can test out other ones too if you choose.

    Video Stream:
-Video Encode: I usually select either MPEG4(Xvid) or MPEG4(DivX)
-Video Size: Leave it Default if you want the original resolution or if you want to change it then you can select another. I usually go with 720x480, 640x480 or 320x240
(The bigger the resolution the longer the rendering duration, of course)

    Audio Stream:
    -Audio Encode: MP3
    -Sample Rate: 44100

Additional Subtitles: (only use this if the file is subbed)
-Subtitle Stream Index: Depending on how many tracks your file has, say if there's 2, you'll want to say 3 or NONE. I've noticed this doesn't always work though so I go ahead and select somewhere between 5-9 just to make sure the subs do not appear.
(Again, make sure it is the STREAM INDEX you are clicking and not the Font Size when changing the number or you'll just get bigger subs)

6] After you are done setting up the output, hit OKAY. You'll be taken back to the video screen where you can add more files or if you want to cut a specific point in the video out (say a clip) then clip on "option". Move the slider to the start point and click "Start time" then move it to the end point and click "End time" and click OKAY.

7] Once completely done setting up the file(s) click okay and hit the Start button on top.

And then just wait for it to convert and it should be fine

Yeah, I've had that happen a few times which is usually cause it contains some symbol that's not recognized by the program. So changing the file name will fix that.

Sorry to bother, but what if the "illegal file name" is not so "usual" and the error doesn't actually have anything to do with the name of the file? Is there anything I can do to fix the problem?
    Thanks!

Hmm I'd have to know more about the problem exactly inorder to help. Like the file name maybe or like what exactly happens when trying to use it.
