Above album art made by McTricky

    ~The Seven Sins of Purgatory~

Hey, McTricky here. So this is a musical project I've been working on over the Christmas holidays. This wasn't a college assignment or anything, just something I wanted to do. So basically the concept of this album is that each song is my own musical rendition of each of the "Seven Deadly Sins": Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Envy, Wrath and Pride. Despite the amount of songs I've created in the past, this will be the first set of songs to be released in an album. Each song will have the same melody in them, and basically I just work around them. Here's a New Year's present! I really hope you can take the time to listen this, and I hope you enjoy it!

    Track Listing:
    1. Rendition of One's Lust - 02:17
    2. Rendition of One's Gluttony - 02:03
    3. Rendition of One's Greed - 01:44
    4. Rendition of One's Sloth - 02:40
    5. Rendition of One's Wrath - 02:28
    6. Rendition of One's Envy - 01:45
    7. Rendition of One's Pride - 03:19

    Artist Notes:
~ This album has been optimized for iPodding. It includes the album art you see above and all the songs have MP3 IDv3 tags on them.
~ Each song has a certain melody in them. You'll know when you hear them.
~ "Rendition of One's Sloth" is somewhat influenced by a song called Circle by Flyfeaf.
~ "Rendition of One's Pride" is heavily influenced by O Fortuna by Carl Orff.

Each of these definitely had a story to tell; for instance, "Rendition of One's Own Pride" reminded me of a war between two kingdoms, and the nobles who won took the opposing kingdom under seige and were very proud of what they had done.

The "Rendition of One's Own Lust" track made me feel sad, especially at the beginning, but as the song moved onward, it became more jazzy and sultry, and built onto a more suspenseful track.

My favorite, by far, was definitely "Rendition of One's Own Sloth". It reminded me of me, and how the days come and go, but I never can quite take any opportunities that lay before me.

The music was very beautiful and suspenseful, and I really did enjoy listening to all the tracks. I'd comment on the other four, but really, it'd just be ranting on how nice these sounded. You compose some of the most beautiful music, McTricky. I can't wait to hear more of your compositions in the future ~ <3

You captured all of the 7 deadly sins wonderfully. I especially like how you didn't just cover the basics or scratch the surface, but you dug deeper into it .

Things I got out if it when I first heard each track:

    1. Rendition of One's Lust - I can actaully hear this in a sex scene of a movie. xD I like the way in builds up into a more snazzy, jazzy track. (like Konata said earlier)
    2. Rendition of One's Gluttony - It's like a epic fight that just keeps going and growing. The fast pace really brought the severity out, well done.
    3. Rendition of One's Greed - I got this image of a rat going through the city and watching all the city people, taking things that they've left unattended; unoticed.
    4. Rendition of One's Sloth - Love the Harp; I agree with Konata's interpretation fully.
    5. Rendition of One's Wrath - Sounds like a struggle of control and the lack of it just keeps building and boiling.
    6. Rendition of One's Envy - Reminded me of something I would hear in a movie or on CSI - the case is coming together and they're starting to realize it's become more than they suspected.
    7. Rendition of One's Pride - There's definately the presence of clashing forces that shows no signs of relenting until the very end.

...that's...quite a colorful way of putting it. XD

Great stuff, Tricky. I'd critique, but it'd be like listening to a broken record.

    Here Sera goes....

    1. Rendition of One's Lust:

Didn't really understand why it started out sad, but I suppose that it was supposed to symbolize the sad yearning, AKA, lust? Saxophones were well placed, though I was surprised that they didn't completely control the song. After the saxophone part disappeared, it became less of a typical lusty track. More like raw emotion. I'm not sure if that was what you were going for? I have a lot more to say about this one, but if I do it'll become a wall of text.

    2. Rendition of One's Gluttony

Drums were an excellent choice for this one. As the song went on, the drums just got faster, so I assume that, connecting this to gluttony, once you start eating you just need to eat more and more. The sad feel underneath it all definitely said something about remorse. After all, not all people are proud of their gluttony. Loved the end part with the wrong note.

    3. Rendition of One's Greed

When I heard this, I imagined some sneaky thief. And those pianos that started to pound at a certain point sort of made me think, "I want it all - all or nothing" or something along those lines. Andy Ichigo's interpretation of the rat scurrying around is perfect. The fact that the end sounded like the beginning definitely is meaningful, like an endless cycle.

    4. Rendition of One's Sloth

The harp is epic. Usually when I think harp, I think peaceful and serene and etc.., but this one was different. Sounded something like time ticking away. Thing is, I can fall asleep to this. It doesn't have too much of a driving sound, and the drums in the background seem insignificant, muted, and muffled. In the end, I loved the repeating piano. The song seemed to color the world in gray. (Now I must listen to that Flyleaf song - still haven't gotten Memento Mori...)

    5. Rendition of One's Wrath

The beginning reminded me of a broken fuse. I loved the drums, that constant beat in the right channel. Literally sounded like someone beating someone or something. The drums certainly seemed dominant in this piece. When the drums went away and only had violins, it sounded like conflicting emotion. In the end, when everything was building up, the ending was oddly abrupt. Sort of left me incomplete there.

    Rendition of One's Envy

The fat brass in the background is that ugly green monster. This song didn't have a whole lot of direction, and it seemed utterly repetitive (not sure if in a good way or a bad way yet). Of course, it built up, but this one left me a incomplete again. Then again, that's how envy is. Or am I looking too much into it??

    7. Rendition of One's Pride

This reminds me of FIRE EMBLEM. Like everyone else said, this was definitely some epic battle, and people in epic battles are usually fighting for their own pride. I imagined some strong generals ordering their soldiers to battle and whenever the cymbals crashed it was like two soldiers clashing. The slight melody in the background (some sort of flute or woodwind instrument, I think, in the right channel), seemed like the everlasting truth behind the battle, which is totally ignored because everyone's fighting for pride. This one stood out from the others.

Overall, all of them had a sad, regretful feel to it - the guilty conscience as the sins are committed? I can't quite pick out a favorite but my favorites are between Glutty, Greed, and Sloth. Awesome job overall!!

Gaah, sorry for the big walls of text. You pulled a little further away from your typical epic fantasy type music, so huuge kudos for that!

You know, it's REALLY interesting too read other people's interpretations of each of the songs and I have to thank all those who have listened so far, and the few who've written what they thought. Much appreciated. Most of your interpretation were either the same as or close to my own.

It's no surprise you all thought of this as an epic battle. That was the direction I was going for. I discovered this Timpani instrument on my laptop, and I was like: "WHY I HAVE I NOT USED THESE EVER?!". So I think those drums are what gave the song a more driving force. I like what Serah said about the woodwind instruments (Flute & Oboe, btw) being everlasting, but ignored truth behind the battle.

First of all, to quickly touch on what Andy Ichigo said: I personally don't think I could hear this in a sex scene of a movie. And if I did, I would actually laugh. I dunno why xD

This song went through three stages because this started out as an experimental track. At first I had planned for this to be a sort of romantic song, hence the strings and harp at the beginning. And then I decided on a time signature change and I decided for a more jazzy and sultry feel like Konata said. Afterwards it was exactly what Sera said: Raw emotion. And then at the end it's back to the harps and strings, and for me that symbolized sadness. In a sense the song is like a journey of a man's/woman's lustful life.

This song is my favourite, and to be honest I really didn't have a clear vision for this one, but I did make this one a sad one because I know being slothful can be being lazy and depressed. At the end I was going for a sorrowful, yet magical feel.

And Serah, do listen to that song, or heck the album. It's really good! xD

This is my other personal favourite. Musically, I decided to pile loads of melodies upon each other, especially with the timpanis (the drums) and the fast melodies. This way I could emulate a feeling of someone continuously taking a lot in.

Andy Ichigo imagined a rat and Serah imagined a sneak thief. I imagined a nightcrawler. But in terms of this song, they're same I guess xD

    One thing I should've done better on this is the mixing. Like, take this song and put it through Audacity or something and take a look at the waveform. It's a mess D;

I really like Sera's interpretation of this song. Considering that this was actually made for Eternal Genesis (hence why it has a game-like feel to it), I felt that this song had elements of Wrath in it. This song was actually made way before I joined the VAA, even. The ending was abrupt because it was made to loop for Eternal Genesis. Since it's quite old, I've lost the project file for the song, so I couldn't fix it.

Truth be told, Rendition of One's Envy was really hard to do, because I had no ideas for it. The first 20 seconds of the song was the only good idea I had for it. Considering I composed both Pride and Gluttony on the same day, I was all out of musical juice for this one. But anyway, I can understand both Andy Ichigo's and Sera's interpretation of the songs quite well.

    Wow, wall of text.

I'm considering making another album similar to this called The Seven Virtues of Mankind. But I dunno...
