This weekend I finally had a chance to see Hiyao Miyazaki's newest film, Ponyo on the Cliff, and like all his films, it was absolutely a delight to watch. Now being the complete dorkus that I am and living nowhere near a respectable theater, I was forced to look for it online, and was only able to find a subbed version which I watched and enjoyed immensely. Not doing my research, I was also under the impression that subs were the only english version of the film available and I thought it would be a great idea to go ahead and dub a few scenes. So after collecting most of a cast for these few scenes, locating some video and music, and figuring the whole set up to be a great dubbing and mixing experience... I was informed that there was in fact a dubbed version and it was the one in theaters now.

Still this was a fun experience and I hope you still enjoy this!

(Note: Due to some issues in getting this clip up - lines, effects, etc - some of the material for this is months old (especially Cake's lines, and some of the mixing). I realize this isn't the best example of my current work, but I still had fun with this and hope it's still enjoyable to watch.)

That was really cute. Good work all of you.

Dragonknighttara: Your mixing was really good but you might want to watch your levels around 1:40ish. Fujimoto's gasps come across a bit too loudly in comparison to the lines that follow.
Also I was a little confused about the laughing(?) sounds when Fujimoto was putting Ponyo back into the tank with all the others.

Darkwolf: When Fujimoto drinks the last few drops of the green elixer is he supposed to sound like he's going to puke? I have never seen this movie so I don't really know, but from the context of this clip it seemed like he was keeling over from an excess of magic/power/whatever. And since he says "This is excellent" immediately after drinking it your gagging sounds seemed a little misplaced? Maybe more of a gasping type of sound might have been better? I liked your last few lines a lot though. At first your voice was a little shakey but it really seemed like you were sinking into your character by the end

Camarilla: Cute voice but honestly you came across a little too whiny in some parts. Like "I want to be humaaaaaaan" was kind of strange sounding to me. I understand you have to match the lip flap, which makes it more challenging, but the character's face was so excited and bubbly like "oh boy! oh boy! I'm going to be a human from now on!" and yet your tone was more like "But I don't wanna..." I'm just nitpicking, really, but I felt like a more naively optimistic tone might suit the character better.
Also watch your enounciation. I couldn't tell if you were saying "I want ham" or "I want him"

Duly noted on the levels - usually I'm a sticker for those, but that line may have gone in the wrong track by accident (some had higher volume levels than others). I must not have caught that. D: (Ugh! Nitpickyness why have you failed me?!)

Also, the laughing sounds were actually ripped directly from the movie - it's the noise Ponyo's sisters make as they're swimming away and worried. And yes, they are rather weird XD

He did follow the context of the clip on that reaction - at least from the Japanese. Actually, that reaction was even bigger, but I liked that particular take best.

Yeah, she is actually supposed to whine... a lot XD Ponyo's throwing a bit of a mini temper tantrum at the beginning and once again from the reference of the original japanese VA, she is very whiny. Her "I want to be human" is especially bad because she's literally begging her father for it even as he lectures her about how wrong she is.

Well this was an extremely fun clip to watch.

Fujimoto- Honestly I thought he did a great job acting and sounding very natural with his character. He really seemed to get into the role and it was nice to listen.

At times I felt like he could've shown a little more emotion though. Like when he's opening the door perhaps he could grunt a little more. Or when he's talking about having the power of the sea flow through him.

His talk with poyo seemed quite natural and it's how I imagined it would go. I felt at times he could've sounded just a tad more irritated though.

Finally I think his voice was a bit too low at times and it was hard to hear him. Overall though, he was great.

Poyo- Also exactly how I imagined, she also did many of the things Fujimoto did well. I felt she could've sounded a little more annoying and a little more energetic "I want feet!" but overall not too many complaints.

Anyway it was a great clip and aside for a few voice level issues I don't got much to say. Great job!

Having seen this movie recently in english at the theatre, I came into watching this clip 100% biased. And I must say, despite said biases, I completely /adored/ this clip and the voices you guys used. This is one of my favorite movies so it really means a lot when I say I thoroughly enjoyed this. X3 <3

Darkwolf: Your take on him was definitely different from what I expected, which isn't a bad thing in the slighest. I really loved your tone and emotion for him, your voice in general brought out a new interpretation to him that I really liked. X3 The only thing I could suggest, and this is being very knit-picky, is to sound a bit more worried on a couple lines, considering that your fish-daughter wants to become a human, but other than that wonderful job. ^o^

Camarilla: Oh. My. God. Your Ponyo is positively adorable! I seriously was squeeing, and I really liked you more than the english. You sound much younger and cuter than the english version, which I thought suited Ponyo wonderfully. I wish you had more lines in this clip so I could hear more, but hopefully there will be just that - more! <3

Mixing: The mixing was very lovely, Tara! You've definitely improved since the last visual I've seen from you, so uber kudos! 8DD I think, and I can't really remember but when Ponyo's feet and hands poke out, it felt a little empty. Maybe some cute pop! like sounds would've worked, but again I don't remember if the scene had those in the first place, so if not just ignore that. XD That's really the only thing that stuck out for me, but again lovely job!

Overall: I really really /really/ enjoyed this and I hope to see more! 8DD

Excellent work... I wish there was more of this dub to watch as I too have the misfortune of not living near a theatre that played it. I too watched the subbed one. Anyways, both performances were amazing and it was almost like getting the chance to watch the real dub. Mixing was good too.
