CAKE BATTER'S SUMMER DEMO REEL 2009

    STREAM
    1:30
Tell me if these don't work~

    BGM:

Freeplay Music | Rurouni Kenshin OST | Fruits Basket OST | Fullmetal Alchemist OST
Incompetech: Awkward Meeting, Faceoff, Flighty Theme, Scheming Weasel, Mighty and Meek

    SFX:

Freesound Project | VAA SFX Library

    Some Notes & Personal Commentary:
    • God, I’ve been so annoyed by my last demo and I’ve been dying to make a new one. Since I got my Snowball mic, I decided it was high time to make one now because I wanted something to be proud of when I listened back on it.
    • I especially tried to focus on the acting, because to be honest, I feel that it was the delivery and not the range that was the greatest weakness in my last demo. If you listen to the ’08 demo, you can hear some weird speech pattern going on and some odd inflections that seriously bothered me. XD; these are things I really tried to avoid for the ‘09 demo.
    • Though I was mostly working on the acting, I also tried to put in some more variety in voice types. I guess I’ve always felt held back to do yelling lines for fear of maxing out, so I tried a few out on this demo. I also tried to make the mixing a bit more interesting this time around.
    • As for range, once again I am compelled to say that my forte is still in the mid-range (tomboys, little boys, etc.), but I have been working on my higher voices, and I do believe they sound better than last time.

Any constructive criticism would be great~! I'd love to hear any feedback or advice for this!

EDIT [DECEMBER 21, 2009]: Fixed the sad reading to build up more~

Oh my god I hear one of the SFX from the pack I posted awhile back.*o* I feel so happy. I was useful!:'D

I think this was a huge improvement over your last demo.:3 Your range is quite large, but I felt like some voices sounded the same (though they weren't next to each other so it made it harder to tell), but you have already stated that you weren't focusing on range.xD The 4th voice's volume was really low compared to the rest of the reel so it was hard to hear it. The 6th voice's emotion was the only voice that felt lacking. You got quiet all the sudden at the end and felt slightly stale, I expected a gradually louder voice, though it started off really well. Btw, your new mic sounds great!

Great job!<3 I love your voice!

Haha, mong, it's been a long time since my last one so..~

Yeah, Spade, that SFX was totally perfect! Thanks~ :]

Oh I totally agree with you about the fourth voice's volume. I think I may remix it so it's louder. As for the sixth voice, you are so right! A build up probably would be better for that line. I'll think about recording it, because it's totally bothering me now. XD

    Thanks for your input! :]

Aaaand mong comes to critique! 8D did i hear azula's voice there? :O

This is a huge improvement from our last one, I have to say! 8D Love the paper clips line. XD And homg, still love your boy voice. TEACH ME. (and the sexy one.*dead* not to say you're not sexy all the time, of course ;D)

Delivery was actually very good for each line, but the crying one seemed awkward in delivery in the last half. Your range is quite versatile, but I get the feeling that you've bunched the higher-range voices near the beginning and end. I think one or two of your voices sounded similar too, but like spade said, it was quite hard to tell. XD

If you want to take it further, I think you can try maybe differentiating the characters of the different voices themselves more. Some of the lines had different emotions, but they sounded like it was from the same person (if that makes any sense...?). For example, the two 'evil' sounding lines sounded quite similar in delivery, when you could have taken the emotion 'evil' in two different directions. If you do that, it may also help differentiate when voices are in a similar range.

It may also be worth throwing in some accents and older elderly characters, but now I'm just nitpicking. XD

Aaand that's the end of my ridiculously long critique. I hope it makes some shred of sense. XD Overall, you have still improved loads from your last demo and it was really enjoyable to listen to~

    Pretty good indeed.

Your much better at your more playful voices then your serious lines if you ask me though (but the serious ones were still good).

Like the guy before me said the crying voice was pretty awkward and didn't sound very natural.

The liquid snake line was pretty cool but the laughing was kinda flat which is strange because your laughing earlier on in the demo felt very natural.

    Great demo though!

You are so right. I think I really will rerecord the crying one. And now that I give it another listen I do kind of hear the bunching. I think I may take one out or replace one or something.

This makes total sense to me and I have to say I agree. I was having trouble figuring out the next step in developing my voice should be. And ridiculously long? Not at all! If anything it was super helpful. Thanks mong!

you did. :X totally ripped off the last two lines, haha. <3

And hyperknees, thanks for your insight too! I don't remember including any laughter near the beginning though. I have to agree that I have to work on my laughter in general though. :] As for my serious delivery, I think you're right in that regard as well; for some reason I feel like I need to take each line a little more over the top than it actually is and when I do serious lines I feel like I have to tone it down almost too much.
