Their Eyes Were Watching God

The main character, an African American woman in her early forties named Janie Crawford, tells the story of her life and journey via an extended flashback to her best friend, Pheoby, so that Pheoby can tell Janie's story to the nosy community on her behalf . Her life has three major periods corresponding to her marriages to three very different men.

Recently read this book in my English III class. One of the best I've ever come across. The beginning was kinda ehh for me, but it got better & captivating real quick. And the ending, it was so great and unexpected. I recommend this for anyone looking for a good romance novel. Anyone else here ever had the pleasure of reading this?

I read that for English III too (last year). One of the senior guys and I bonded over that book during a musical dance practice for West Side Story when I was reading that. If you really liked it, I would suggest reading Beloved (which I am reading for my AP English IV class). In a way, it sort of reminds me of Their Eyes Were Watching God.

I also had to read this for my English III class! It was a surprisingly great book. Even though I had to write 3 essays on it and then a research paper about it, it became less thrilling. But the book itself was truly heart warming. I never got to see the movie but I have always wanted to!

I also have to agree that the beginning was a bit hard to get into, but after reading more into the book and as the life story of Janie expands, I'm glad I read this for English class.

Holy balls. You know I actually liked this book, even though it was forced down our throat by the public school system. The movie came out a semester later, and I still haven't seen it. Didn't Oprah produce?
