    There are 12 grades, the later grades have diff names. Don't worry bout those.

    Elementary is:
    1st-6th

    Middle is:
    7th-9th

    High is:
    10th-12th

    So your kiddo would be a freshman in high school.

    After HS there's intermediate college and a bunch of other crap. But I guess you don't need that.

    Kindergarten is an optional thing. Like cram school. Of course 90% of students do it. Kids even start school at a very early age. *I started at 3 xD*

    Their word for high school is 'koukou' they'd be a first year 'ichinensei' eg. 'Watashi wa koukou no ichinensei desu' (I'm a first year in high school). You didn't ask that, but it may be useful if you're doing something set in Japan. Luckily, Koukou translates directly as 'high school' which is really handy.

    It may also be important to realise (as Darth Mongoose touched on), Japanese people don't acutally say 7th grade, 10th grade ect...

    If you were in 8th grade and in Japan you would say "I'm in the 2nd grade of middle school", or if you were in 12 grade you'd say "I'm in the 3rd grade of high school"

    I recommend you do a fair amount of reading on Japanese school life, and life in general before you start writing. It's not that much work and it'll make your RP much more accurate and may help you with some key points in your story (maybe two characters take the same train home... but perhaps you wouldn't think of this if you didn't know that many students live far enough from their high school that they need to take the train).
    Just remember: information is at your finger tips, and a quick search on google is all you need ^^.

    Yeah, they're ages are the same as ours, and it goes as Lirifox said. Though you should really take Crimson's advice. x3 Also I think you should know a little about Japan before you start an RP on it ^^;
