I'd say, self casting as a main character is TOTALLY fine... as long as you can play the character and play it well. If the producer will be as dedicated to the character as to the mixing, go for it. And I also see it as this... if the producer is going to be doing all the work of scripting, casting, collecting lines, finding music, finding effects, finding music, mixing everything together... doing all that work EARNS you a role in your own production. (POWER TO THE PRODUCERS! RIGHT ERICA AND LAURA!!)
What DOES annoy about self casting is the people that, and this is gonna sound mean but it's the truth and you all know it, are just NOT actors or do NOT have the right range, and they are fooling themselves when they self cast themselves in certain roles in their own productions. It's the SAD truth people. If you can't play the role, let someone else that CAN play the part do it.
OH, and don't open auditions for a part then self cast yourself in it anyways. Self cast from the start or don't at all.

I agree! XD
I think that in all my projects (except one), I've self-cast a main character. I think it's totally fair if you think you can pull the character off. And even if you can't, well...then it's good practice
I think a couple of them though are characters I just really want to play, but when I audition, there are other people who are a heck of a lot better who get cast. Sooo I just want to try it out XD *Cheap*
I don't see self-casting to be a problem, within reason.
For example, if you have a production where you specifically placed yourself into the story, it makes sense if you cast youself for that particular role; main, supportive, or extra.
I always win. ^_^
I know, Okageeee T_T So much love for teh old school mixed in sound recorder goodness. I actually used Okage music in my Demo lol.
If I had the time to revive it, I totally would.
And that Self Casting Couch also includes a lot of the more "well respected" producers in the VAA community. Why do people complain about self casting again?
Well the way you guys are putting it. it sounds correct. Darn. Maybe I should have self cast myself in my Pokemon fandub as someone bigger. like Ash T_T
LoL well if you wanted to play Ash and you were comfortable with the critiques you got as Ash, and only didn't self cast because you thought it would make people angry, then I would say yeah you should have. \
But if you didn't cast yourself because you wanted the best cast you could get and didn't think you could do the role justice, than you made the right call.
Its all about personal preference.
A producer is the one essentially doing all the work for the production, and they have the right to self-cast anyone they choose. It's their production and if they want to play a character, they can. If they suck at it? Guess who's going to look bad? THEM. They will be the ones getting the bad comments and feeling stupid if their performance was the only one that got poor reviews.
I ALWAYS self cast, unless it's a clip with only guys in it or something. Why? Because sometimes I want to play certain characters, which is usually what drives me to dub something, to be blatantly honest. I want to try out my range [or uh, lack thereof] for certain characters. I'm not going to improve if I don't voice act, hmm? And I get sick of auditioning for people who never finish their projects. The biggest complaint I get is about me self-casting Haruhi Suzumiya. I AM Haruhi Suzumiya [personality-wise] and that's my favorite voice to do, so hell yes I'm going to self-cast when I do Haruhi stuff. If you want to play her, do your own dub D:
All that said.. I do think it's kind of silly and a waste of other people's time to open up auditions if you plan on self-casting from the beginning. But it is silly to complain about others self-casting.. sure, sucks for you when a role you want is taken, but learn to mix and do one yourself. Producing is fun!
I pretty much agree with Haushinka. We can only hope that you're self casting yourself to a character that you can actually portray. I've only had one production so far and I self casted myself as a character that doesn't even show up until the 6th episode, only because I knew I could play her. I could have self casted myself as a main character but then I probably would have slaughtered it.
The point is, it is your production and you can do whatever you want with it, just as long as you give it semi-justice.
But yeah, don't open up auditions or understudies for the character you cast yourself in, that's just being "nice" for no reason what-so-ever. Complete waste of everyone's time and a total turn off. (as has been said already, but I thought I'd emphasize...)
