My background is in retail management, but after two employers filed for bankruptcy on me in the space of 2 years and I couldn't find any retail mgmt jobs with decent pay, I was forced to find a new career.
For the last two years, I've worked solely as a performer. While VO represents a very small percentage of my income, there's been a lot of TV/film production work in Atlanta and I've marketed the heck out of myself and submitted for everything that paid to keep the bills paid. Just in 2009, I worked as background, stand-in, photo double and driver for over a dozen feature films and TV shows.
Some of my work is up on IMDb now:

Another chunk of my income comes from performing for live events doing everything from singing telegrams, hosting expo booths, to live product demos. I also have a children's reading program for schools and libraries where I teach kids the craft of storytelling and how to create character voices.
I recently was hired as an acting coach for a popular acting studio in the Atlanta area, so now I don't have to work quite as hard to find work. And I fill in periodically with a Gospel quartet as tenor or baritone (we were in Japan for nearly 2 weeks in March). I have another acting coach position I've been referred for which I'm waiting to get an interview for. I think I have a really good shot at getting it. If that works out, I should have enough income that I won't have to keep working long hours on TV/film shoots and I'll have more time to pursue VO work from home.
