Need Feedback :/

First of all, HELLO everyone! 8D

As some of you know, I had an absolutely horrific fall term in school so naturally, I'm buckling down with my studies this term which unfortunately resulted in me pretty much putting all of my projects on an indefinite hiatus. But I'm happy to report that I'm doing so much better now. I'm going into finals weeks with high B's and A's instead struggling to pass.

Anyway, I'm slowly starting to get back into mixing. I've gotten some opinions and many people would rather me release my projects in full episodes instead of parts. But... would it really be annoying if I released them in parts? For example, Chef Pierre Episode 2 part a and then when I mix another lets say 2 minutes I release that?

What's the unwritten etiquette here? I have to be honest and say I'm more motivated to mix 2 minute segments than 4 or 6 minutes at a time. Of course, I could always do 2 minutes until I finish all of it but with such a big project I feel like I'll never get it done and then I put it off.

Obviously, time management is key here. I've finally figured out a great system for managing school, fraternity, and volunteering. But as far as producing/VAing goes, I'm at a loss. Do you producers just mix like an hour a night? Or just when you feel like it? I don't want to completely vanish from the VAA but at the rate things are going (or projects not going ) it might happen :/

So after this whole ramble, I'll summarize my questions concerns.
  • Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)
  • Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?
  • How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?
  • How do you stay motivated to finish a project?

For those of you reading this, thanks for taking time to help me out, I really appreciate it.

And for blogging purposes, this is my progress:
  • Chef Pierre: Episode 2 [33% done]
  • Tammy Talk: Episode 1 [20% done], Episode 2 [10% done]
  • Haruhi: Clip 1 [99% done], Clip 2 [99% done], Clip 3 [75% done], Clip 4 [50% done]

    I can completely understand, t-cars.

Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?) - I only find it annoying when it leaves off in the middle of a scene, but I don't see you being the type of producer that does that. So long as the cut off is at a point where you just leave with a fadeout and not in the middle of someone saying something fairly important, I don't see any problem at all by releasing short segments.

Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy? - No. Like I said, so long as it's coherent, I don't see it as a problem. Mixing takes time, and anyone who produces understands that. I personally prefer to see segments and clips because it allows you to see progress. So rather than having to wait months on end for a producer to get around to a full release, you can steadily be reassured that it's getting done.

How often do you mix and what is your schedule like? - Since I'm a theatre major and honors student, I'm heavily involved in things outside of the VAA. I rarely get the chance to mix, so when I do have time to work on something, I spend almost a whole day on it, but that actually just means I only mix about 5-9 minutes of stuff a month. It's always dependent on what I'm involved in at the time.

How do you stay motivated to finish a project? - This is what I find to be the hardest part. Sometimes I want nothing more than to stay locked in my room, mixing away, while others, I just don't want to do anything. To stay motivated, I usually find myself watching/listening to other people's projects. It also helps to have someone support you in your endeavors. Or a someone in particular who just inspires you to work hard. I'm a competitive person, though, so what usually drives me is the desire to reach the levels of those before me.

College absorbs your life. I've seen what being in a fraternity does to a person's free time (aka my roommate -- who is a girl).

    - Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)
By really short do you mean like 1-3 minutes of the episode every time? I've never really had the happen, but that sounds annoying to me. I rather have the person either split into 2-3 big chucks or deliver it as a whole.

    - Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?
If we're still talking about a full episode, then yes/no. It takes a lot to complete an episode and I admire those who can do it, but I've never really understood why they don't wait to put the whole thing up together. But then again that's me and I know cast members can be pretty impatient/annoying about releases.

    - How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?
I'm a college student so my schedule is pretty busy, but I tend to mix/work on something every week. I place my studies first, so once I complete my homework and I have nothing better to do, I'll mix or script or something (I sound like a total loser, but that what it takes to have a good GPA). Depending on what I'm mixing, I can either finish it in one sitting (i.e. Soul Calibur clip) or in several over the course of a couple of weeks.

    - How do you stay motivated to finish a project?
I think of how people will stop harassing me for the next clip of CANAAN and how peaceful it will be. xD I just pace myself -- there have been times when I've really gotten annoyed with a project and left it alone for a while. I try to work on different projects so I don't completely focus on one and get bored of it. Plus I like freeing up the space on my computer. :D

I hope my answers help. XD

    • Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)
No I like clips actually. I rarely will ever sit through a whole episode dub. xD As long as it's not like 30 seconds, cause that's just lame. xD
    • Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?
Not at all! As long as it still looks/sounds good, it's fine.
    • How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?
Well I'm at school mon-fri 7Am-6:30Pm. But I generally just mix when I feel like it. But then again, when I feel like mixing, I usually end up pumping stuff out and mixing like 10 minutes worth of stuff in a couple hours...
    • How do you stay motivated to finish a project?
I always try to remeber why I wanted to do this project. Or to think of the cast/fans waiting to see it come out.

I hope some of that helped (=

Ugh, motivation plays a huge role when it comes to producing, especially online, when everything's done for fun. I battle it 24/7 for just about everything. XD

Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)

It really depends on how long the segments are. But if we're going for 'really short,' then I'd think so. Like LoH said, it would be better for a full episode to be split and released in 2 to 4 parts.

Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?

I'm a bit iffy on this one. Again, I agree with LoH that sometimes you want to assure your cast that it is getting done, yet I'd prefer it if everything was done all at once (so you get that full-episode feeling). Either way is fine by me, but full episodes are difficult, so I don't blame anyone for going either way with it.

How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?

Because I often get sidetracked by life outside the VAA (keeping up them grades), my mixing gets pretty delayed. I try to get a little bit in once a week, usually on weekends. I like to get something released every month. Then again, it all depends on that motivation.

How do you stay motivated to finish a project?

Great talent keeps you motivated. Sometimes just hearing awesome lines from awesome cast members want you to get it done. Otherwise, I give my old stuff a listen/watch or listen/watch other projects (like Kage-Ichihashi said). That gets me into the mood of trying to accomplish something myself.

Sometimes for motivation, you've got to step back and take a break for a bit. I did from the middle of summer until around November, when I was ready to take everything on. It's like having writer's block, really XD.

Um. Yeah. Hope my rambling helped some. 8'D

    * Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)

Not really imo. If it's like 1 minute segments I think that's stretching it, but I'm fine with 6 minute or so sections. I usually skip around when I watch long things so I never had that 'full episode' need or anything.=P

    * Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?

Nah, sometimes people just want to give small teasers and appease the naggers.

    * How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?

Since I've been showered with school work lately too my mixing days are like 0.;_; Since I'm a sophomore I need to be doing lots of extra curricular stuff so I rarely have time to mix anymore. I usually do maybe a little work at a time every one or two weeks. Even then I start over a lot since I don't like how things come out.

    * How do you stay motivated to finish a project?

I think about how much of a lazy pig I must be for putting it off so much.xD And thinking about other projects I want to do, but can't start until I finish off some.

    • Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)

Depends on how short the segments are. If it's less than 5 mins, I'd rather watch it all in a go. If it were a full-length episode (24 mins), I say three parts is best.

    • Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?

If that was that you were aiming to do in the first place, then no. XD If it were a full ep, personally I'd like it to be put up all in one go just so I can watch it in one go, but mixing can be long and painful and I can understand if people want to release in parts as they go.

    • How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?

I am a ridiculously slow mixer and IB eats my life, so I get clips done really slowly. *sob* I try to keep a schedule, but I'm bad at keeping to it. >: And like Spade, sometimes I just start all over again because halfway through I don't like the mixing anymore.

    • How do you stay motivated to finish a project?

I normally hit the mixing slump when I'm halfway through. Sometimes I just make myself work on it and after a while I get really into it. Other times, I get motivated to get it done when I think of the other awesomely mixed fandubs that don't seem to take as much time as me. XD

Is it annoying when producers release really short segments of a full episode (audio and visual?)
~ I wouldn't find it annoying personally, although there's no doubt there are people out there who would. If the episode were to be split into about 3 parts, then that's all good. If you're hosting it on YouTube, you'd have to anyway.

Do you feel that segments/clips are just a cop out for being lazy?
~ When it comes down to it, doing full episode dubs take a lot of time and motivation. It wouldn't be such a lazy act to bring it out in segments.

How often do you mix and what is your schedule like?
~ Even though I'm college student, I get a LOT of free time with the added bonus of having 2 days off during the academic week. So I mix whenever I feel like it. Most of the time, I can mix for hours on end, and things done fast.

How do you stay motivated to finish a project?
~ I always aim to finish what I started, no matter how long it may take. If I wasn't motivated, Eternal Genesis wouldn't be where it is now, and a lot of the clips I've done/am doing just wouldn't happen. I also think about my cast members and the community who are looking forward to my projects, and make sure they're work isn't put to waste.

Thanks so much for the feedback you guys! It really helps to try and see things from a different perspective.

I really like the idea of listening to other people's projects to get motivation, that's something I haven't yet am willing to try!

And word to the wise, when all else fails, you remember, it's your project and you can do whatever you want with it! 8D
