View Full Version : Reverse-Racism: Does it Exist?
Does "Reverse-Racism" exist? Discuss.
Here are some definitions:
"A form of discrimination against a dominant group."
"Reverse discrimination is a term used to describe discriminatory policies or acts that benefit a historically sociopolitically nondominant group (typically minorities), rather than the historically sociopolitically dominant group."
Here's the deleted part of my first reply, again (so you guys know what Nikkita's referring to):
Here is an opinion from the Canadian "Youth Against Racism" web site: "Many white people claim to have experienced mistreatment, prejudice, or racism from people of colour. This claim may be used to justify stereotyping and mistreatment of people of colour. But racism is institutional, the power is always on the side of the institutions, which in Canada favour white people. Anyone from any group can have personal attitudes of prejudice towards others and may be subject to action or litigation based on discriminatory activities. But racism is not only about prejudice - it is about power. And in Canadian society, only white people have the power to enforce systematic, institutionalized racism. We are born into a society in which racial power imbalances are already established. Reverse racism does not exist in today's society."
Some people say that only those in positions of power and/or privelege are capable of true racism. Others would argue that racism comes in many forms, and from many different sources and positions, one form being 'reverse racism'. I, for one, disagree with YAR's statement. I don't think that only one race of people are capable of racism.
A black man, for example, angered by the historical imbalance of privelege between whites and blacks, discriminating against an objective white person for no other reason other than his rage, would be reverse racism--to me, at least.
I think it does exist and it is unfortunate. It's kind of an eye-for-eye brand of racism.
Racism is racism. If you hate a person because of their skin color, then you're a racist. The term "reverse racism" doesn't mean a thing. It's just another term to bring attention that there is many groups who are faced with racism today. And there always has been. Not that this makes it any better, it doesn't. Maybe it's a new sociological term, because it's not very common yet. Racism is racism, regardless of which "race" hates which.
In other words, I'm not quite sure what to make of this. XD

I've been a victim of it myself. Of course it exists. :\ To deny it would be as realistic as denying any other "type" of racism. YAR saying white people are the only ones capable... well, that's also denying another part of human nature. It's silly.

Quite agreed. Like a lot of people have said, racism is racism, simple as that. If you dislike/hate someone merely because of their skin color, then you're being racist, regardless of wether they're a minority or not.

I hate the term reverse-racism. If you discriminate against someone based on their skin color, that's racism. It's not somehow different if it is a race that is classically in the minority discriminating against a race classically in the majority. It's still racism.
That article Tom posted seems to be talking about racism within the governmental system that perpetrates racism in society. The idea that real racism can't exist without active oppression is total BS. Racism is about indiscrimnatory dislike or hatred based on skin color. It does not need to be supported by a society's government to exist.
It's an easy answer.. Just listen to Masahiko's Song "I, Racist". That should explain it all.

I totally agree with you guys that anyone can be racist. However, I don't think the person from YARS who wrote that statement is saying that only white people can be racist. His definition of racism is just different from yours. "Anyone from any group can have personal attitudes of prejudice towards others." To him, prejudice has the same meaning as racism has to you.
I really don't know if it does.
I'm not sure.
I think it does. Whether or not it deserves its own name, is a different matter.

reverse racism is still racism against a race, thus it is just plain racism.

Yes it does exist. When i worked, my manager was really racist towards me and it caused me so much stress that i had to quit for my health.
I think racism is just wrong, and i can't see why people are racist in the first place. It just pisses me off!

Racism is a specific type of prejudice.

Yes, I know. I was just saying that he seems to think that prejudice is racism and racism is something else. I hope I'm making sense, lol.

Everyone is a little bit racist today!
Sorry couldn't resist.
Yes, reverse racism exist. You know what it's called? Affirmitive Action! I'm sorry, but give college admissions to those who worked their butts off to earn it. I'm a firm believer in working hard to get where you want to be. To get in out of sympathy of the past God knows how many years wheras one has to score high on SATS, have good grades, etc is really unfair.
I'd say more on this, but I gotta run to a final right now. ^^
Yes, racism is colorblind. Take a look at my Asian parents. They don't want me having African friends.
