Hey gang!
After hearing a huge number of questions related to assistance with AX Idol voiceover monologues and song selections, I decided to gather a whole bunch of AX Idol past winners/finalists together for a roundtable discussion on tips, tricks, advice and suggestions for hopeful singers and aspiring VAs.
This is the singing portion of those said discussions between myself (an AX Idol 2010 Voice Acting Finalist), Mario Bueno (AX Idol 2010 Singing Winner) and Rachelle Hager (AX Idol 2011 Singing Winner).
Get it on the SoundCloud!! http://snd.sc/IPFInB
And go ahead and share this with those hopeful singers out there!
By the way, YES, we WILL be doing a voice acting discussion in the same vein.

Give the WHOLE podcast a listen and see if you have the same questions.

that was actually really helpful, {my computer hid the podcast link...srry} but i do have one more question. I understand in the podcast that rachelle had said that you should do what your good at and be yourself like with belting and what not but when i do that sometimes people dont really like the vibrato i sing with. in your opinion is it better to sing with your own flavor added to the song or sing it similar to the original artist? I know there is still a chance that if you sing it like the original artist that it probably wont be as amazing because its notlike putting yourself into it but at the same time people might think that you put too much of yourself into it...i hope im not making this confusing LOL

Honestly, you're over-thinking it.
Like we mentioned, you can't rely on everyone else's opinions of your voice... but at the same time, you should take constructive criticism on your voice. In the end, what really makes a difference is you CONNECTING with the piece that you're performing. If you really, truly, absolutely ENJOY what you're singing... then the audience will ENJOY your performance.
The moment you start dissecting your voice into acceptable or unacceptable pieces, you start losing focus on what's really important: your own passion for singing.
Let that passion guide you and you won't go wrong.
