I'm very happy to see more and more original projects showing up. It's inspiring to see it to be honest.
The mixing was pretty solid, the music selection was good as well.
The acting overall was a little dry though. A lot of it felt like people were just reading the script and recording them, there wasn't much emotion when there should have been. For instance when Lady Byron was saying that she'd "Kill them" it should have much more anger and frustration driving it, but it came out on the same level was the lines that were said before it.
Mippa was the stand out in the episode, you could feel the doubt within her and the annoyance with her mother. For the next episode, if you don't do it already in your scripts, I'd add direction so the voice actors should know what their emotion should be. I feel like if the acting and emotion is improved it'll greatly up the quality of the production. Since right now the story, cast and over all feel is there, just the actual acting needs to catch up a bit.
Good job! Keep it up and I'll definitely be looking for the next installment.

Obviously I've caught up with all the episodes, but Episode 3 was quite exciting. Got to hear George get serious and passionate, and have Tom get a little personal in his off-beat manner. I did enjoy all of the cast's performances, but Tanner really got me locked into this chapter with his solid acting in my opinion.
The awesome thing about projects like these is that there's so much freedom to truly "act" but there's also the opportunity to not quite sync up with how a line could be read. The latter is hardest to judge since it could easily be written off as just "how the character would read it." With that said, I do believe every VA had a moment where this sort of thing happened. I did expect to hear a little more from Sean in his angrier, sadder moments even though George is extremely nonchalant and only starts to brighten up after Laura becomes involved. Andrew also had a line or three that just sounded plain or off (e.g. When Jake tells them to escape, his "Yeah" sounds oddly inflected. I also want to note that it was difficult to follow the moments involving Tom "capturing" Lady Bryon. There wasn't much adlibbed vocalization to determine how or when she broke free.
The mixing was well done overall. There were a few SFXs that weren't all that quality, but I understand that "quality" and "free" don't usually mix. Do you have any of the SFX libraries from VAA? They're really good and widely ranged, thanks to some very giving individuals finding them.
Your writing still is the strongest aspect of this production with your VAs second. I've really started to get a feel for why the characters say what they do and react the way they do. The VAs bring that out well which I'm sure you're very proud of. It was the reason why I auditioned for this audio drama, aside from the quality of the mix and cast. However, as Adam mentioned before, I would recommend adding specific direction in the script even though you do encourage adlibbing. It really does bring a more cohesive level of interaction and play between the actors if they are at least told "struggling to hold onto"
Thank you for being so diligent with this production, Tablet! I'm very much looking forward to my character's appearance in Chapter 4.

Ramune, thanks for the constructive criticism and actually taking the time to listen through the project, it really means a lot.
Now for the points. For the first two episodes there was very limited direction placed on lines, I wanted to give the actors the feedom to assess the situations and characters and begin to grow comfortable performing in the roles without having each line ring fenced with direction. I've found too often in the past as a VA that ring fencing all lines with direction though provides a definite response can limit a performance and it becomes very easy to 'over do' or ham up a line when the producer didn't actually intend for it to be that way. You may have noticed a reasonable amount of direction on lines in the Episode 4 script especially when something complicated or heated is happening, you may have also noticed a lack of direction on your own lines... this was done on purpose as since you're new to the production I wanted to give you an episode where you can let lose which will give me a gauge as to how to direct your lines in the upcoming episodes, I like to remain flexible with a VA's interpretation of the character though I do agree that on occasion there have been times where the lines do not completely flow in a scene but I am working with some of the actors on improving their performances and I think especially with episode 3 the mixture of feedback and comfort within the characters the actors have developed really showed.
Sound effect wise I mainly use the free sound project as there is a reasonable amount of choice when it comes to what I can use for each SFX, I also mix sound effects together to create more suitable effects (the sword that killed georges parents for one was a composite of a sword being sharpened and a water melon being hit with a hammer) I also record my own sound effects when the need arises (when the jammed radio is turned off after the opening music in episode 2 that sound was my old transistor radio buttons being pressed or when Tom is packing the bags towards the end of that episode I put a pair of head phones on and listened to the raw audio stringed together all the while packing a bag in time with the scene and recording the sounds it made then mixing them directly back into the scene.) I'm always on the look out for more sound effect resources and I will graciously look at the SFX libraries on the VAA, thanks for pointing me in their direction :)
As for writing, until this production I had never really considered myself a writer, I honestly thought I'd enjoy the production side more. I have since found that as much as writing Season 1 had been a labour of love (the first season took over 6 months to write) I have found that I simply enjoy telling stories. I've also found especially in episode 3 where pervious I would clean the vocals for that scene then mix the scene that in episode 3 I chose to clean all the audio all at once which left me the creative freedom to make everything flow and allowed me to actually mix the episode over 2 days instead of 2 weeks.
I hope my waffling addresses some of the points made, this is after all my first production and every episode is a new experience and learning opportunity and I thank everyone who participates either through acting or simply listening to the show. Thank you all!

Everything you've said adds up. So no worries. I get where you were going and I understand how you wish to give as much creative openness as possible. =]
By the way, have you considered putting these up on YT? Though I understand the desire to just "like telling stories," but stories should have an opportunity to be heard by as many people as possible. If they are on YT, then definitely provide a link. I'm certain many more would prefer to access this from there.

Going to be checking this out today and probably will edit some time as well. By the way, have you considered giving this more visibility in other places? Blogs as a sole platform isn't the best way to garner an audience anymore. Blue Sky is a quality, engaging story that would probably have more listeners if you increased its reach, since you do keep up with your deadlines. Just an idea to consider. =]

As of two days ago I never heard of Audio drama or radio drama, whatever it's called lol.
Anyways last night I listened to the first episode of blue sky, and it was better then I thought it would be. I enjoyed it and I look forward to listening to the rest of the episodes.
I thought the overall quality was pretty good, good story as well, and I liked the cliff hanger at the end of EP1, but like adam said, some of the acting was a little dry, nothing to complain about though, it's not like this is professional project with a large budget, however I do have a thought. I'm new to VAA and I've never voice acted before so I don't know how the producer goes about giving each actor their lines. I'm guessing they get their lines mailed to them individually or do they get to see the whole script? If they get to read the whole script, then the actor gets to see the other characters lines, and has a better knowledge of how exactly he/she is supposed to respond, which would make the flow of dialogue much more fluent. I noticed that sometimes when I character spoke, and then another character responded to what that character spoke it was if they were unaware of what the first characters feelings were, so they responded with an awkward sounding response.
Anyways those are just my own thoughts. Is there anyone here who could tell me how script lines are usually delivered to the actors here on VAA?
Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the first episode, as Adam already said yes I send out full scripts to the actors but especially in the first episode I think everyone including myself was trying to get a feeling for the characters and the direction of the show, I'm sure if you keep listening you'll see marked improvements in all areas as the actors settle in and I become more confident and capable as a mixer.

Yeah, great job man! This ep came out great and Dan did a great job of mixing it, and is doing a great job with the story. I really liked the scene between you and Ramune's character, Isaac, quite a bit. Nice. Toggle and Sgtoku, I can only hear your comments in your respective character voices, haha! XD
With that said, Blue Sky has seriously become one of my favorite original projects to be a part of. Without any limitations on how we approach our roles, it gains so much additional depth that each of us can bring into our characters and the production. Chapter 5 was wonderful! I've listened to it a number of times already. Having had a chance to listen to the earlier chapters again, I see how much you two (and the rest of the cast) have dug into their roles and made them better and better each chapter. George and Tom's dynamic has become so natural and Laura's interactions and growth with them is so much sweeter and meaningful now. The antagonists are just as great to listen to also, especially the Prime Minister (his VA has improved the role so much!).
I'm looking forward to showing this to people once it is more accessible to share publicly. Issac has been a ton of fun, and Ch.6 will hopefully be a real treat for everyone involved. =]

Episode 6 "season finale?" So I'm assuming that the series will continue past episode 6 then yes?
I dunno why, but I assumed before that it was only a 6 part story.
So I got a question. When will season 2 come out? Next year like TV series or will you start making them and putting them out for download as fast as you've been putting out these past 6 episodes?
Thanks

Originally Blue Sky was only planned as a 6 part story but the world and I'd created just screamed for a second season, so yes there will be a season 2 :D
I'm aiming to begin production in March next year and as with TV shows I will try to do a season a year.

This was another solid episode, and I've said it before, but I'll say it again, the VA's have really put their best foot forward. I can't say enough how much I love the way the character's are portrayed, from Neil, Gwen, and Gareth; to Melissa, Andrew (poor Tom!), April, and the performances of the roles that were a bit shorter, that took their time to add their own acting to the production, like Tanner, and Alex. This is not to mention those small roles that added so much for such small parts, like Seaglass who was the waitress in episode 2, the more recent Robert who played Guard 2 in ep 6, and all the others I'm not mentioning, as not to sound anymore like ending credits as I already do.
Gotta say, keep up the good work Dan, looking forward to your next season.

I just marathoned episodes 1-7 (will be listening to ep.8 later) and I have to say, well done! Each episode seemed to have improved more in more in the acting, and it's amazing how intense it can be without any visuals. Great job, keep up the good work!

Okay have to friendly bump this. This series has a special place in heart as it's the first part I landed since signing up here at VAA.com...
Episode 11 has been released, enjoy!
Why this thread no get no love or feedback long time!? waaaiiii...
I just wanted to say I'm a huge fan of this show. Have been since before I landed a spot in it. And I feel like I have big shoes to fill in this, so it's kind of daunting!
For people who are newer or just haven't had a chance to check out Tablet's Blue Sky, I highly suggest it. It's free to stream online and the production quality is gorgeous, high caliber stuff. I'd take a guess that each episode is about 18-30minutes long on average. No 'commercials', unless you count the verbal credits at the very end, and that takes no time to read through at all. Taken from my review on madgeek (which features accredited names, rather than forum names, so apologies for any confusion, but much of this series is VAA.com born and bred):
The first time listening to this I was too distracted by some instinctive need to criticize my own performance in the context of all else. I think in listening to this a second time, I was greatly impressed by Gwendolyn’s and Dylan’s performances. There’s such a tangible aural kind of chemistry there– a seriously believable ‘arch nemesis’ dynamic in the way they interact and part of this may also be due to Dan’s mixing but I swear it was like they were quarreling in the same room. I also seriously enjoyed Glen’s performance as Miguel– his accent is so much fun to listen to! J.C. also did a great job capturing the kind of proper, lofty feel of a priest with his role as Father Dillion, whilst not letting his tone infringe upon his ability to communicate actual lines and make them out to be a caricature. Sean is consistently fantastic, with that voice hollywood ‘it’ quality of a leading man, the kind of anime hero incarnate. And the music, the music in this series gets me every time (Miguel’s theme in this was spicy fun, and the opening has always had me thrilled for whatever’s to unfold in each episode). Both Dan and Sean also did great work on the script! Such big talent and a stellar lineup for this show. I’m so honored to be a part of it with all of you. This episode was worth the wait!
My only issue with this episode is so very minor I hesitate to bring it up, but my last name was slightly mispronounced in the credits. Otherwise I'm hoping the tinnier audio quality of my own contribution to this series will improve as I have since upgraded recording equipment. It's all good in the hood, though :)
Bottom line: GO CHECK OUT BLUE SKY IF YOU HAVENT ALREADY! Lol. Because it's a good series. Even before I came along, that is, from the very beginning of Blue Sky.

Hey Mora, thank you for the kind words. I too look at my performance and am quick to see any mistakes I may make, but that's a good thing. I gotta say though, you did a very strong job as Alex and I enjoyed the passion in your voice. Both you and Glen's performances were solid and we're happy that you're lending your talents to the show. As per the usual, Gwen gave an excellent, villainous performance, and Dylan really captured the dynamic of those scenes and brought it home. I'm looking forward to hearing more of J.C. as well, he did capture his role nicely. Again, you did great Mora!

So, I caught up and listened to episodes 10 and 11.
Episode 10 was very well done. I just love hearing George's thought narration. It added a sort of interesting depth to the story. But I wonder, what is up with Charlie now? And will Tom ever be cured to what's happening to him?
Then came episode 11....
I-I am almost SPEECHLESS! Especially the performances of Gwendolyn and Dylan. Once again, Gwendolyn pulls off excellently the maddness of Lady Byron, and Dylan passionately displayed the anger and irritation of No.6! It's interesting, since Lady Byron is the villain here, but the way No.6 talks, he seems off himself in a way. I have to say I was literally at the edge of my seat while listening to this! I could picture it all in my head and it was just.....wow. And that ending! Once again, I am left with wanting to hear more. Excellent job! And I love the new actors brought in as well. Their performance was also executed nicely. And, as always, George soudns awesome.
Keep it up! I look forward to future episodes!

Had to jump in and give my kudos to the cast of the 2nd season of Blue Sky. I just got caught up the other day and I have to say that Dan (Tablet) and Sean (George) have outdone themselves with the writing and characters. There's a lot more going on than the general straightforward conflict in Season 1 and the format of Parts is very much making it all come together quite neatly. My favorite portion was George coming in contact with the two guards in the bar. The performances of the guards and George's emotional conflicts really brought that bit to life, especially at the unexpected end of their encounter.
The performances are strong and equally gripping as they have been in the past! George continues to run the gambit of emotions and trials and getting that first-person narration in Episodes 9 & 10 just made for a clearer representation of his encounter with Tom. Speaking of Tom...what a groove Andrew has found in distinguishing Ethan in such a raw manner! I was truly impressed with his vocal approach - that rise & falling method of speaking, as if struggling against an unseen pressure was unique and naturally executed. I'm a bit sad that it seems that Laura was written out of the story - if she actually was, it was done so gracefully - but Melissa's performance didn't let up at all. The way things were going between Laura and George, it kind of seemed inevitable despite their bond. I hope she can return. Gwendolyn and Dylan are a joy to listen to. A much more strained dynamic than Byron and Issac were, that's for sure, haha. The way Byron and No. 6 are written just makes me want to grin; No. 6 is so set in his ways and Byron can play a much better game. The ending of Ep. 11 was damn brilliant; she waits and waits and then strikes...but who knows what's next!
I've given my kudos to my former cast mates, but I am also happy with the how the other newcomers have handled themselves. Charlie plays a darn good fiddle opposite of Sean. There have been times when I didn't fully believe what he was saying (more like his acting fell a bit flat), but he has always found his footing again. The end of Ep. 10 proved that well; his comfort with role allowed him to take his read in a radically different direction that really left me wondering what the heck was going on in his head. Michael (Remnant), Mora (Alex), Glenn (Miguel), and J.C. (Father Dillon) also have such distinct vocal qualities and strong read choices that it's very easy to remember all of them. The way Michael read for Remnant was in full confidence to the point of being blind, which was great to hear especially right before he escaped. Mora gave Alex a strong, but tender tone that made listening to her saying what she didn't really mean quite enjoyable. I can tell where her role will go, but to what extent it will bloom is what I'm looking forward to most. Glenn as Miguel was hilarious. Not only the script, but in Glenn's performance of how seriously Miguel took himself despite being a foreigner. Just really great stuff. J.C. chose a very pleasant, but not too old-sounding tone that was pretty much what I'd expect, given the way he spoke. Honestly, not much to complain about.
And let me not forget the other actors who played minor roles. They were wonderful additions to the story also. Just as the lead and supporting cast have been holding down the fort, everyone Dan has cast was right for the part.
Blue Sky continues to deliver a high-quality audio production, save for a few low-quality mic issues with a few cast members. I'm still proud to have been involved with the first season of Blue Sky and the 2nd season is just as, if not moreso, exciting to listen to. You all are so talented and I sincerely hope this production can find a larger audience before it reaches its closure. It sorely deserves it.

Oh wow Guys, thanks for such kind words.
As always thanks must go out to the regular cast and especially Sean who's kindly offered his services in the production element of the series.
I must say that for anyone contemplating starting an original audio drama that Season 2 is most probably the hardest thing you'll ever have to write. In the case of Blue Sky in Season 1 I had originally planned 6 episodes which then went down to 4 then ended up back up to 6 with a massively re-written story arc. The problem with a season 2 especially if you had a good season 1 (which we did :D ) is that you get bogged down in trying to replicate that success... or more that feeling that made season 1 special.... so in this case I didn't bother. I knew where everything left off, Blue Sky in ruins, George and Laura and each others throats, Byron the Prime Minster and Tom thought to be dead all that wrapped around the city falling to the Kingdom of Azin, the stage was set to simply continue where I left off.
Episode 7 was very difficult to write, this was the return to the season and I had decided for Season 2 that we would have 12 episodes but they'd only be around the 20 minute mark as opposed to the 30-35 minutes from Season 1, this shorter length would allow for more punchy story lines but may sacrifice character development due to the shortened length. Episode 7 had three drafts until I was happy to put it in production. A concept that had grabbed me from writing the season 1 finale was, what would happen if Blue Sky tried to continue to operate as normal without the information structure that had previously been in place... what would happen if they tried to sabotage something without that support in place? This formed the basis of 'To the Ashes' Parts 1 and 2. One thing I was aware of that as time passed in the real world that I'd have the same amount of time pass between seasons and that things would happen, relationships become strained and 6 months seemed like the right time to jump right back into the action.
After 'To the Ashes' I had had a crazy idea that I would split George and Laura up and give them each their own 2 part stories that would weave the main narrative for the season, Laura's Story was to be written by myself and revolve around Laura leaving George and her own little adventure. I then asked Sean to write 'The Seed of Doubt' using his character of George along with Tom and a few others. The idea was that one episode of Seans episode would go out then one episode of mine then the two final parts would follow. Unfortunately as with many things it hasn't quite gone to plan but we are proceeding ahead full force and things seem to have settled down.
I can't thank the cast enough, especially the regulars from Season 1, 2 years volunteering for a project really is something to be proud of, the commitment and passion you all have really drives me to keep going to produce the best quality production I can :)
Also I almost forgot the listeners! You guys are fantastic! Patiently waiting months at a time for an episode yet staying loyal to the show really is inspiring!

~Andrew Hackley-Tom/Ethan
I gotta say, it feels refreshing to hear it all come back after a break. Everyone was at the top of their game it seemed, and each line felt fluid and in place. The character interactions between each set of actors felt pretty on key, so kudos to the actors, and the audio mixing talents of Daniel Whitelaw. I especially liked how Gwendolyn was able to get Lady Byron to portray Lady Byron's method of approaching Ethan and George.
Oh, and Ethan is crazy.
"Who are you calling crazy!"

THIS just made my day!
And Tom...yes, yes, he's back!! Please forgive me for my fangirling, but he's my favorite character! Excellent job, as usual! I am curious to find out more about this "Ethan" personality. I wander what Dillion did to him, if he did anything at all.
Oh, and my credited name was mispronounced, LOL. The "Hane" is pronounced "Hah-neh" (it's a Japanese word, meaning feather). I admit though, hearing it made me laugh a bit XD Other than that, I am so proud that Blue Sky is officially apart of my resume, even if it's just as an extra.

Oh no! You're right you're name was mis-pronounced! Haha, it's almost becoming a Blue Sky tradition that someone's name gets mis-pronounced in the credits! Don't worry next episode it'll be pronounced correctly! *salutes*
