View Full Version : What is "too much" in using voice enhancers on a computer?

I'd Rather be Golfing

I'm in the middle of editing and have been playing around with some sound effects and filters, etc. and I after changing my mic to emphasize the bass more, and then added a little reverb, my voice sounded way better than just the straight recording. But, that's obviously not my 100% authentic voice.

Now given, I know a lot of musicians change the way they sound entirely, but I want to know what using too much is. I mean, if I go to a studio and they are looking for something that they hear on the demo, and they hear what I really sound like.....................:( What is too much? Should I just leave my voice the way it is? Or should I try and make it as "good" as possible with the effects? I know it sounds really dumb, but I am just not sure. I've never done this kind of stuff.

Thank you!

I'm assuming your talking about demos. And in that case, the only thing I'd consider too much is changing your voice to the point where you can't actually pull it off if somebody asks you to. So adding a pitch change, or distorting your voice, is going too far. But increasing clarity, or making it sound nicer by adding/reducing bass or whatever is fine. Adding things like reverb however can give an environmental effect, but don't do it for every line in your demo.

Hmm, when it comes to demos and vocal effects

Reverb and Echo, it can be fine if not overused and overdone
EQ enhancers that can make yur voice stick out and sound crisp, always shoot for.
Artificial Pitching or Distortion, that's a BIG NO-NO! The Artficial Pitching is pretty much false advertising in your demo, which is..well..bad. I think if you would use it for anything, it would be for those sort of demonic type characters, as long as it's synced with your original recording so it has the "two-voice" effect, but like with Reverb and Echo, always in moderation..in fact once or never in a demo would be your best bet for that one.
