Final Fantasy VIII (ファイナルファンタジーVIII, Fainaru Fantajī Eito)
"This will be a Final Fantasy VIII fandub like no other. Bold statement, but true."
-Christian Sekhanan
----------------------------------------
What will separate this fan-dub from many others is the amount of trivia knowledge about the story, both in-game and production-wise. We've taken the world of Final Fantasy VIII out of the depths of common knowledge and try to deliver a whole different aspect of which was meant to be realized but Tetsuya Nomura.
Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase both mention how the world of FFVIII is heavily influenced by European culture and architecture. We will bring this trivia to light as we make real international references to this world. of the references we have decided on: Balamb as Australian, Galbadia as USA, Winhill as New Zealand, Shumi Tribe as Japan, Esthar as France, and so on... these references have been studied (on basis of Topography, Politics, Geography, Culture, Architecture, etc...) and note we are only using these as influences on our approach of these locations.
We wish to make FFVIII into an international Journey that features many accents and cultures, much like how FFXII did.
Voice Acting-wise, we will follow Christian's ideals of "Realism in voice acting". This philosophy is very unorthodox in its approach since it allows normal "human" conditions and circumstances to influence the voices of the characters. the clean and crisp, seemingly perfect delivery style of game/Animation Voice Acting is ignored and replaced with a rather "everyday" feel of the voices.
Voice Actors were cast according to our vision of the characters. We have studied the Characters deeply to the point of making individual Case Studies for each. We have decided to break some of the more common interpretations of the characters that have persisted throughout fandubbing and we've given them, what we like to consider, psychologically-approved motivations.
Characters like Quistis Trepe, who is commonly interpreted as sounding very mature, was given a very sporadic voice that fluctuates between being very motherly and professional, to straightforward, unbearable, and at times even obnoxious, as to create a "flaw" to her Mary Sue archetype character. Rinoa was decided upon to sound more gentle and girl-next-door type as opposed to the overly upbeat interpretation. Selphie was also tone-lowered to avoid commonalities with other interpretations and was given more of a "human" feel rather than the "Anime" persona she's believed to possess.
The male characters have also gone through type-changes much like how we decided to make Seifer a deep-voiced australian, and Zell a high-pitched australian. this decision was brought upon by the fact that we associate Balamb with Australia and the both characters have been in Balamb the longest (Zell being adopted the earliest of the fateful orphans).
Other characters have also donned interesting accents such as Fujin, who Kitase has described to have a speech impediment of sorts, Kiros who we've given an British-Indian accent, and many others.
Although against Christian's wishes, we've decided to have him voice Squall as he did in Final Fantasy Still for reasons ranging from Tonal preference, Delivery Style, and Novelty.
We've removed/hidden the speech boxes to allow us to flip and play with the script, making the scenes seem more dynamic, consistent with our "realistic" approach, and at the same gives our Voice Actors freedom to experiment around with their lines and delivery.
Another thing we offer in this fan-dub is the story direction. We decided on a commission and omission style story telling, wherein we include parts of the side story not directly accounted for in the mainstream plot, as well as omitting parts we find unnecessary regardless of mainstream plot.
hopefully, our entire interpretation of this novel game will give our audience a deeper understanding to what we consider the best and most underrated Final Fantasy installment (made by the FF team not including works done by the Ivalice Alliance team).
