The definition of a best friend is someone who you care and trust completely. No matter what, the best friend will stay at your side and support you. They will honestly tell you your flaws and make you a better person…When you’re down, they’ll come and stay by your side as long as you need.
But when your best friend is the opposite gender and you start having feelings towards them…what then? Would you tell them? And if they like someone else…what would you do? After all, you are…their best friend.
It’s an interesting question. It’s not uncommon, but people assume that for a boy and a girl to become best friends, they must have a relationship going on. Well…not always…
Man Up! is a short 3 episode radio play that centers around Chloe, a girl who happens to be a guy’s, Kevin, best friend. When a smart cute transfer student shows up, will this change their friendship?
the events in this story are purely fictional and any resemblances to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. XD

Wow... this radioplay is honestly like the radioplay adaptation of my college life... which only just ended two months ago! (with all genders swapped, that is...) ...kinda creepy...
Critique time!
Chloe: Sera Phia - I remember you putting up that video of you trying to record from this, lol. This was a really cool role to hear you play, Sera, for as many times as I've heard you play the "leading lady," I don't think I've ever heard you as the lead. So it was a crazy change of pace! I thought you nailed the part, I loved the crazy you delivered in the inner monologues. Excellent. Can't wait for more.
Kevin: JCTrance19 - Overall, good. Diction was good, you're well spoken, good good good. But, you need to put some more energy into your lines. Your character sounds either like he just doesn't care, or he's really tired, and I really thought it dragged down your performance. Kick it up a bit and you'll be great. I'm really looking forward to hearing what you pull off in the next part/chapters.
Gray: Notebookface - Ironic that the "super senior" has the username Notebookface... even though nobody really uses notebooks anymore, it's all about the laptop now... anyway! Very good performance. I liked your sarcastic delivery and thought you had a believable performance. Nice work.
Jessica: dragonknighttara - Good good good good good. No complaints. Gotta love the girl's best friend character. She's just there to say what we're all thinking anyway, lol. I look forward to any future appearances that your character may have!
Lydia: lightofhope18 - Good strong performance. Absolutely no complaints. If your character were a real person, she'd totally be somebody I would date. ...I don't know what that says about your performance, but good job! XD
Scott: ConVito - Another homerun, ConVito, even if it was just a few lines. Way to stick it, my friend!
Rick: Broly5 - "Taco Tuesdays!" That was hillarious. Very well done!
Jasmine: lightofhope18 - No complaints.
Professor: TheCheetoBandito - I always knew you were "easy." Now I have proof! Hate to say it, but you could have had a little bit more energy, too, my friend. I've had classes like that and the profs tend to have just a little bit more kick. Especially if the class is 3 hours long and it's the first day. You need to keep those kids awake! Otherwise, though, no complaints. Well done!
Everything Else: Andieluca - Lovely! Like I said, creeps me out a little bit because there are some HUGE parallels to my time in college going on here, but that doesn't detract from the quality of your production. I don't know how I'm going to get through listening to the whole thing because obviously we're gonna want whatever Chloe wants... but Lydia is my type of girl... so I don't know what I'm gonna want to happen in the end! @_@ Guess I'll just have to listen and decide along the way!

YES. So excited this is up :3
Chloe: Sera Phia - Your narrations sounded really natural and you really kept the pacing of this first part going strong. You've got the awkward nice girl tone down beautifully and you really fit this character well. There were a few times I think I caught a few minor delivery or enunciation errors that I think might have been subject to the take, but that's getting nitpicky. Nice freakouts though! They really built up well and you make for a lovely female lead =D
Kevin: JCTrance19 - I thought your "I didn't think you were an English major" randomly had a weird delivery on it, but over all you had a really consistent performance here. For most part this was very natural, if not a tad low key, but it worked for the character. Towards the end once you started talking to Lydia, you sounded especially good, so I"m sure you'll grow into this more as the story progresses. Nice work!
Gray: Notebookface - I've never heard you in anything I can recall, but I really liked what I've heard of you so far here. Once or twice it seemed kind of like you slid into a bit of an odd voice, but there were some really cool and very natural deliveries from you that I really enjoyed. Definitely looking forward to your scenes coming up!
Jessica: dragonknighttara - Yay self critique! Actually, I'm really happy listening back so far. Jessica was a blast to play and I'm glad to hear her in action =D
Lydia/Jasmine: lightofhope18 - Oh my gosh, you sound like me! Engineers FTW! ... sort of. Seriously though, I'm getting flashbacks to the Tech
college already. I think like JC you were just a tad low key vocally, but you had a great tone for this character and I think you nailed where she's coming from well. I really enjoyed listening to you here - definitely want to hear more!
Scott: ConVito - Love the energy here a lot. I hope you pop up more in future =D
Rick: Broly5 - Nice voice, but I did notice your mic quality was a bit off compared to everyone else. I did enjoy your energy though, so thank you for helping to provide interesting extras!
Professor: TheCheetoBandito - You sound very imperious so far. I think you could make your deliveries flow a tad bit more naturally, but you've really got the deeper mature tone down well. Keep up the good work!
Mixing/Writing: - This turned out SO well. Seriously, I'm so excited to be in this. Your leveling for all the characters sounded strong (though I was listening with speakers and not with headphones). The only weird thing I noticed was sometimes there were some weird rushing/shifting noises and I couldn't tell if it was characters moving/sitting down or a transition between Chloe's thoughts and actual events. Since it wasn't always consistent or very clear, it was difficult to make out and probably not necessary. Again, that's pretty nitpicky though. Oh! And I loved your music selections too - very well placed!
Writing was also really natural and a lot of fun. Nothing struck me as clunky, so I'm really impressed with this. Really really awesome - this is a great production and I want more please!

I was looking forward to hearing this for quite a while. Imagine the "OOooOOooh!" look on my face when I got the link in my e-mail today.
A note before we continue; I am actually a 24-year old super-senior, and I'm pretty much Gray incarnate. Except, even less of a ladies' man. And I'm allergic to parties. Don't be hatin'.
A commendable performance by everyone! Sera Phia's narration freak-outs had me lol'ing pretty hard.
There was some top-notch production work going on here, Andieluca, and I'm quite impressed. I'm gonna' have to buckle down and take the gloves off (and hide my copy of Dragon Quest IX) when I go to produce my own radio play. Excellent choice of music for the Chloe narration bits, I might add.
I can't wait until next week to hear Part B!
good gravy, do i really sound like that?

If your character were a real person, she'd totally be somebody I would date. ...I don't know what that says about your performance, but good job! XD
...A-Are you hitting on me? XD
I must say, I really enjoyed listening to this first part. The characterization was dead-on to college life (Andie, I think you've been stalking me or something 'cause Lydia is basically me in a nutshell, except for her major -- ug.) Sera Phia made an awesome lead and I loved Tara's dreamy interpretation of the BFF role. JCTrance19 sounded a little bland at parts, but he started to light up a bit when talking to Lydia and I loved Notebookface's Gray -- Super Senior indeed.
I thought the mixing was well done and I liked the swooshes and whooshes for transitions. It helped me keep everything in order and whatnot. I cannot wait for the next part~!

I'm on to your takeover scheme, still!
You all did a pretty spot-on job! A few chuckles here and there to keep up the interest. And it is pretty amusing hearing Sera make emphasis on how Chloe has absolutely positively without fail, no feelings. So she says

My only complaints is my own mic quality, which I'm not even sure what happened to it (I think it's Audacity's LAME encoder...) But otherwise, this was really enjoyable to listen to! I'm glad to be working with you again, Andie, and also Notebookface and JCTrance and dragonknighttara and LoH...heck, the entire cast was a pleasure to work with.
Your mixing, too, Andie, has improved much from when you first began! Great job!

Yay, Part B!
I really liked this, too. Just a few comments here and there, mostly just weird ones...
When ConVito came in I was all "DAVID FROM EG. WUT." Ahah, my mind is plagued. Notebookface is amazingly natural at acting. Always a huge standout to me. c: Along with the natural-ness, I love how natural the script is, the dialogue moves very flawlessly and is very realistic. I wish I had a friend like Jessica (kudos to dragonknighttara). Also, Lydia sounds like the type of girl that I'd be jealous of, being that I'm an awkward boy-girl like Chloe. XD
Can't wait for the final part. <3 You're doing a great job mixing, Andie, keep it up!
Damaru
08-13-2010, 10:05 PM
I listened to the first part a while ago so I'm gonna miss critiquing some of the roles outside of the mains, sorry! DX
Chloe: You did a very good job at emphasizing her awkwardness, but I think you took it slightly far at times, exaggerating a bit too strongly and bending some enunciation as a result. Perhaps toning the acting down to get the subtleties would work for you in the future. Nonetheless, you displayed a whole range of strong emotions and carried out a lot of great, nervous energy. Quite worthy as the main lead. :)
Kevin: You definitely have a good tone here; you have a very natural sounding teenage voice. I really like the low drawl in your voice because it gives me the sense that he's laidback and honest. However, I'm not sure if it fits the character at certain points. You sounded tired or bored throughout; adding some energy to your lines would benefit to give a little more variety to your performance.
Jessica: I wish she was my best friend... ;A; Really, I love how gentle and wise you made her sound, yet full of wit and playfulness woven into her low-key tone. You made her sound both mature and supportive, and your performance makes her one of my favorite characters in this radioplay! :3
Gray: Wooow, delivery was extremely natural. I love how casual and fun-loving you made him, with all the little quirks and acting full of life. You gave him tons of personality; if he was real I would wanna chill with him. XDD Unbelievably believable! 8D
Lydia: I expected Lydia to be rather peppy, but I'm glad you didn't turn her into a ditz! You made it so that she was just a really nice, smart girl, and you laid out her modest personality quite well. A bit monotone at some points, but I liked how you portrayed her shyness. Good job~
All the minor roles and extras were really well done and placed. This is a great slice-of-life story, with a well-written script brought to life with great actors. And of course, good morals are thrown in here. Tara's last line in part B kind of tugged at me, because it's something I had to consider before too, heh. So, for me it was easily to relate and connect.
Mixing was fantastic! The ambiance and sound effects blended together very well to create a believable setting; I could see this out of a movie hehe.
Overall, I enjoyed this muchly~. Good job everyone. <3 Looking forward to the last part!

Okay, no, I listened to it and it was very good. Acting was consistant across the board and all should be proud. I was really glad to hear dragonknighttara take more of center stage in this part, same with Notebookface. I really thought they had stand out performances this part around.
I can't wait to hear the conclusion. I almost wanna speculate on what I think is going to happen in the end, but I kinda don't so I won't be wrong. o.O Really looking forward to it, Andie! Keep up the great work, and keep making the genderbent adaptation of my life interesting!! XD

I call that my Damaru voice.
I really enjoyed this part, the acting was great and very realistic. I am in love with the cast. The exchanges between Gray and Jessica was my favorite part. The scripting is clever and it flows really well. Thank you for for casting me as the slightly awkward non-drinker girl. My life role.
There was one character who had bad mic quality and that stood out among the other pretty good quality mics. It took me a while to realize that it was grass SFX when Chloe and Gray were walking because it sounded a bit too loud to be grass. Other than that, I thought this was really well done, Andie. I cannot wait for the next part<3

Way to throw an ending at us I wasn't expecting, Andie. I seriously was hoping that it would end with the less cliche ending of Chloe stepping aside for Lydia and Kevin... which, I mean, sorta happened, but not completely.
First off: "I'll Make a Man Out of You" Ringtone? WIN! (Did you make it the ringtone for the reason that I think you made it the ringtone? o.O)
Second: I really liked it. I thought it was just great all the way around. I liked how pivitol Gray and Jessica were in the ending. It felt really natural.
I only have two complaints:
1. JCTrance19's laugh creeped the hell out of me! (Sorry, dude. Laughing is hard, I know...)
2. I WISH Sera had sent you the video of that blooper session she had for you to put into the final product.

Dude, Gray sounds JUST like my neighbor who happens to be my obnoxious friend. Notebookface did a great job in Part C as that character. For everyone else, from the other critiques everything has already been said, I think. Not that I didn't love it, you guys were great!
Great stuff, Andie... and did I hear a AVPM reference, or was that just me? (Gray's holding out for a 10... because he's worth it.)
ALSO, forgot this earlier, but when Gray is driving Chloe and Jessica I can't really tell he's driving. I can hear the turn signal, but it sounds like a car is in the background rather than what they're in.

I don't remember recording any of those lines for Part C. Why can't I remember recording those lines? That was clearly my voice, but I don't remember... What the hell.
Hey! Great job, everyone! The mixing was good, the performances were pretty much spot on, and I loved the jokes.
My only gripe is that I would've liked a more conclusive finale. Maybe I just missed something when I was reading the script, but I would've liked more closure on the obvious love triangle.
And when was Gray going to get him some just-legal college grrlz hanging all over him? I think a sequel or spin-off is in order.

Finally got a chance to listen to it all, and I must say the end result is definitely rewarding. You did a really great job putting it all together Andie! I feel honored to have worked with a talented group of people, I just wish I had been more up-to-par. Listening back, I sound so robotic and unenthusiastic, it's not even funny. XD That's what I get for recording right after coming home from a long, grueling day at work. But for those who pointed it out, I will definitely work on my energy, as it's an issue that's been brought up multiple times in other shows too. *grabs a shit-load of gummi worms and a mug of green tea*

@Notebookface: haha. I'm sorry that it wasn't very conclusive, I guess in part it's because when I was writing this I didn't want an entirely conclusive ending, just because there's a lot of possibilities especially in situations like the one in Man Up! in real life. Open ended ending? I alwys write open ended endings. haha. I'm sorry. I'm awful at explaining.
And a sequel? With Gray as the main protagonist? haha. hmmm...I don't know how great it would be. I'll think about it. But as of right now, I'm working on a new (similar genre) project.
@JCTrance19: haha. I'm so sorry you were so tired! D= If I could, I would send you a gabillion gummi worms! Thank you so much for helping me!
Thank you SO much for all your kind comments and thanks for listening!!!

And when was Gray going to get him some just-legal college grrlz hanging all over him? I think a sequel or spin-off is in order.
^ YOU!
You are awesome. XD By far my favorite character out of the entire cast. Great job delivering his voice.
As for the Man Up!, I admit that I liked the 2nd and 3rd videos FAR better than the first one. I think the actual scripting (not delivery), scripting of Gray made everyone else seem a bit underwhelming at times in comparison, so it would have helped to add a tint more of a natural flow without his help. =p But that is pretty much my only little nag.
Also, Lydia, I knew I was right to be on to your gameplan! >D

This was so much fun to listen to. I'm not usually interested in slice-of-life stuff but the conversations were attention-grabbing and everyone had a clearly-defined personality so they all stick in my mind. That takes some skilled writing there, as well as skilled acting, something this radioplay has in spades.
The only mixing flaw generally involved the cars, the cars usually sounded like they were in the background, like ambience, instead of being in the foreground of the SFX. If you could have made it just a bit more realistic I think I would have been in total suspension of disbelief instead of nitpicking over something relatively minor. :sweat
Great work overall, and I look forward to see you doing something else in the future. ^^

My Andie-Marathon has commenced and I just listened to the entire thing! I gotta say this got even better as it went along :) I gotta give props to all the actors cause you guys just rolled along with this so naturally. You were all clearly very comfortable in your roles and I could easily picture of a group of college students just hangin' out talkin' about their issues. My favorite scene in the entire production is when Gray and Jessica are pretty much having their intervention with Chloe after giving Lydia the ride. The pacing between everyone was simply wonderful. Gray's definitely my favorite character. And Andie I really have to compliment your writing and mixing because its the skeleton for this whole thing and its the air that breathes life into all these characters and situations. My only issues were that there weren't constant sfx while they were in the car and the ending did just sorta show up without too too much of a climax and resolution. But ultimately Andie, you've crafted a very special production and I'm glad its gotten so much attention. Ya've earned it :)
NOW ONTO BASIC!
