Oh popey popey (http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/19/ratzinger.profile/index.html)

Kinda shocked nobody has said anything yet. There is a new pope and his name is Benedict XVI. Personally, I woulda liked a pope that doesn't remind me of eggs but I'm not catholic so my opinion doesn't matter. (Does anyone know how they pick their Pope-name anyways?)

From the very brief glance I took about his positions, and what have you, I'm not to excited.

And upon hearing that he was conscripted into the nazi army during the end of WWII I couldn't help but recall the lyrics to a Bloodhound Gang song:

One part the Fuehrer one part the Pope,
The inevitable return of the Great White Dope

The newly elected Pope gets to choose his name. For example, John-Paul II chose John-Paul after the Pope before him, as he wanted to continue his ministry.

I'm not Catholic, but I was still really excited to see it on TV. It's certainly an event. My dad (an Episcopalian priest) knows a man who works under him--or did, probably not now that he's the Pope.

YAY FOR PASTOR'S KIDS!!!!!!! Okay, my thoughts on Benidict the XVI is that it is a jump back about 300 years for the Catholic church. I would have much rather them elect the Cardinal from Nigeria, that would have showed some willingness to change, but that's my opinion, Im not Catholic.

He was reportedly forced into the Nazi army and not there of choice.

That being said, I don't care whatsoever. Pope dies? Well, that sucks. He was a good die. Pope gets elected? Yawn. It's Tuesday.

Yeah, I knew that much. But still, it's hilarious.

Also, you thing everything is boring...but I bet you want to buy that Super Pope comic or whatever that was.

Robert Kirkman's "Battle Pope."

Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" is a much better comic.

I personally didn't even understand why they change their name upon becoming pope. A bit pointless, I thought. *shrugs*

As to the new pope... I'm not Catholic. I'm not Christian, for that matter, so I don't really care much for the politics of who got the job. However, this said, I really wished the African cardinal might have got it. Studying Christianity in school, I find that there are many doctrines which are outdated. Ideas regarding abortion (it's a women's body, but at the same time, I sort of see the pro-lifers' points), contraception (hey, has health benefits), marriage of Priests (you know, it honestly is a strain. You can't help it if you fall in love), and etc. I'm sure this new person will be as strict as John Paul II, if not more so, given he was JP II's right hand man.

Furthermore, electing somebody older is NOT the way to go if you want to attract YOUNGER people into the Church. :x

I'm not Catholic, but my guess would be the whole process of giving up their identities. Popes never go home. Their things at home are sent for, and that's it. He is no longer his own person, he has given that up to be a servent of the Church.

But actually, I don't believe they HAVE to change their names.

A vast majority of the Catholic population in the world doesn't really want the Catholic church to change and adapt to modern views. Most of the "liberal" Catholics looking for change reside in the US. As much as I might disagree with some of the doctrine, I would lose most of the respect that I have for them if they caved and changed to appease a few rich Catholics and most of the non-Catholic world. It's religion; created to guide people about how they are supposed to live, and believed to be from a divine source. You don't really get to update that.

honestly, as funny as he looks, the pope is still the pope and u shouldnt make fun of him; its rude. as a catholic, i think it was good that a european got elected becuase the church in europe, although the continent where most chatloics reside, the church is in decreasing unlike in africa where church population is increasing. an african pope would help increase the churchs popularitiy in africa, but its not needed ther because the church is growing. a european pope should help the europeans who are becoming more and more secular. oh yeah. and as somone said before, the church doctrines arent gonna change because thats how theyve been for centuries. just because other people disagree, doesnt mean that the church has to change its policies. the pope is god's representation on earth and what he says goes. i dont care what u think. ur entitled to ur opinion and i to mine.

You know, I feel bad for bringing this thread back up since it's been over a month since anyone post, but it was still on the first page.

The post above me in it's complete and (clearly) unedited form is. HILARIOUS.

The Pope, to me, equates to a hyper-critical, severely old-world drag queen with a dangerous influence bearing messages of hate. If he happens to also look like an evil dark lord, it's not going to stop me from making fun of him. He ain't representing diddly to me.

Where else is one to practice forum necromancy if not in a debate forum? Now, if you'll excuse me there is a Goths thread from 2004 that I am looking to exhume and reanimate into an unholy (edit: unholier, I suppose) existence...
