This tutorial will show you how to import .MKV's into VirtualDubMod, which will then lead to them being used for fandubbing.
Why VirtualDubMod?
The reason that you should use VirtualDubMod to perform this operation, is due to the fact that VirtualDubMod doesn't degrate ANY quality from the video, which I have found other editors that do (ex. AllToAVI).
STEP 1:
First, you will need a .AVI Codec. They are FREE, and easy to work with. Personally, I use DivX Free, which I will link you to:
http://www.divx.com/en/downloads
Make SURE that you download a free version. It isn't limited for what you will need it for.
STEP 2:
Next, you will need a Codec for a .MKV File. The best one out there is the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Package). It is also FREE, so don't worry about downloading it:
http://www.cccp-project.net/
STEP 3:
Alright, so you have the Codec's and hopefully the .MKV files you want to use (due to forum rules, I cannot link you to an illegal download). But now, you will need a program that can handle .MKV Files. Not many editing programs do, but this one however, is amazing, it is called AMVapp, mainly directed towards AMV Makers, but also usable for fandubs:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/amvapp.html
In this file will contain a few good programs, but the main one is a program called VirtualDubMod. You can download this program on it's own, but, installing it via AMVapp will benefit you more, due to the plugins already being contained for .MKV files. Not to mention, you get a sweet DVD Ripper, in case you ever wanted to rip DVD's onto your computer for fan-dubbing.
STEP 4:
Open VirtualDubMod. If shortcut doesn't appear, then follow this step:
Start>All Programs>AMVapp>VirtualDubMod (Folder)>VirtualDubMod (Program). It should already be installed.
STEP 5:
Go to File>Open video file via AviSynth. Make sure that it looks something like this:
Files of Type: All files
Template: DirectShowSource
From there, select the .MKV File, and it should import into VirtualDubMod.
STEP 6:
Incase the file is too large, then, go to:
Video>Filters>Add>2: 1 reduction (high quality)
This will reduce video file size, but keep the same quality.
STEP 7:
Go to:
File>Save As
Make Sure:
Save as Type: Audio-Video Interleave (*avi.)
This will render the video into a workable AVI Video.
