So Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and I was wondering what everyone thought of the "holiday". Personally, it's just another day, but that's probably because I'm single. I get the notion that a lot of people don't really look forward to it, being something bad happened to them around this time, etc.. I was just wondering what you all thought of it and if you have any stories (good or bad) that you want to share. Unfortunately, I don't have any to share, but please feel free to share. :D
(As a side question, you know how like in elementary school, everyone would go around dropping off valentines to one another? I was wondering if there was anything like that on the boards before? I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy it! Haha I could be wrong though. :D )

I use it as a great excuse to OD on sugar. Especially chocolate.... Other than that, it's just another day. ^^;;

Up until two years ago, Valentine was the worst day in the world for me....I really hated it, since everyone at school would give gifts to their boyfriends, and girlfriends...and I never had anyone to give anything to me.

So, two years ago, when I got home I hopped on the net, and me and my friend Reiwho had the same thing happen to her, decided we'd be each other's valentine. And we spent the whole night pretending to be on a date, and we role-played it all out, and it was so fun.

Last year I spent Valentine's Day with Anii, and this year I assume we'll do the same. ^.^

(Althought...Anii has some pretty cool Anti-Valentine's Day stories to tell...someone go bug her to tell some. XD)

EDIT: Although, it'd be fun to do a "Be My Valentine" thing on the board, like people did for the Secret Santa where we all PMed Velvy, and gave her our address, and she distributed them out randomly to others. If no one else wants to, I'd be happy to head a "Be My Valentine" program.

Ooh. This thread. How fun.. >.>

Valentine's day...

Besides, everyone knows that the best way to spend Valentine's day is to sit home alone and sulk. That's right. None of this healthy socialization or fancy schmancy dates for me. I'm sitting home this Valentine's day (again), and I'm going to have a great time sleeping. Hell, if I'm in a particularly festive mood, I'll bust out the party hats and throw myself a damn party. Nobody else is invited. To hell with friends. -- Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.com/c.cgi?u=valentine2)

I think I've said this before, but: Valentine's Day shouldn't be the reason you're sweet to the person you're with. You should be sweet to them every single day you're together.. not just one overhyped and overrated day in the year. Show them you care outside of the day that you're "supposed to." - it's much more romantic to do it on a day they *don't* expect.

As for forum valentine cards... eh. If people want to make valentine's day cards, they can, I suppose (Just, please, don't complain about any aspect of giving or receiving cards..) . Last year I got a V-day gift from someone here at the forums, which I thought was really wonderful - made me cry, even. - All thanks to another v-day related topic.

Maybe someone should start up the "Valentine's Day Wishes" thread.

Mmm....while it's recently become a big deal this year (since before this year for some reason all my relationships would end before February), I can't really say that it's going to be any different for me an my girlfriend. I ended up buying her a bunch of stuff (what, like...a thing of chocolates, $50 worth of gold arabian jewelry, knitted her a scarf) but honestly, I'd buy her a lot of stuff any day of the year if she asked for it.

I suppose I can be greatful that Valentines Day is a legit holiday and thus my boss deemed it appropriate for a 4 day break so I could drive to New York and see her :P

Well, I *was* going to spend my Valentine's Day at my choir festival with my boyfriend, but since I don't have one anymore, I'm going to spend it at the choir festival with all my friends. I personally have never had a date on V-Day, so I've spent my time eating candy and sleeping. Often times, since it lands on a weekday, I'm at school, and in elementary school everyone in class would share valentines and candy. XD

Really, I don't do all that much on Valentine's Day because I haven't had a special person to share it with. But I enjoy it.

Valentine's Day is my parents' anniversary. I find that wonderfully sweet. XD It was accidental. My mom spent many years thinking it was the stupidest corniest coincidence. ;) She's gotten over it now.

I like spending Valentine's Day with friends to celebrate love for people OTHER than a significant other when you don't have one. My two friends that I'm hanging out with this Valentine's Day DO have boyfriends, but both have gotten stuck working, so we're all going to hang out.

I don't really think much of valentines day usually (unless i have a boyfriend xD but when i do i make sure he doesn't buy me anything or if he does, it can't be over £1 lol) but this year, since i now have money, i think i'll treat myself to a box of chocolates, a movie rental and a day out in central London xDD woo!

My anniversary is the day before Valentine's, so it overshadows. However, I normally do love Valentine's, because I'm a big sap.

Well, I was going to say something, but Nikki already said it.

Agreed x10. I think Valentine's Day is pretty stupid; all it seems to do is make many people who are single, unhappy. I'm not planning on doing much, if anything, apart from making him a mix cd (which I was already working on, but having a deadline is good, otherwise I tend to fine-tune my mixes indefinitely) and hopefully using it as an excuse to get to spend some time together since I've been so busy lately >.>

I like the idea of expanding Valentine's Day for friends as well as lovers - romantic love is so overhyped by the media anyway and it's certainly not the only kind of love that means anything.

I'm pretty neutral towards the day. It's not pivotal enough of an event to emotionally affect me to like or dislike. If I'm single during a particular Valentines Day, I'll just ignore it with no ill feelings and go about my day--but then, if I have someone special, I see no reason to have fun with the event. I'm mailing Valentines Day cards to friends too.

Eh, it's just a day. :)

Let's put it this way: Some of my single friends are getting together and hanging out that day. To me, it's the day before all that candy gets marked down 50%...

Toooootally....... *nodnod*

I think that people just don't tell the people they love that they appreciate them enough, so they made a holiday.... and named it after a really generous guy who gave candy to children. Oo;; wtf, mate.

But, yeah. People like to hear that you love them. Valentine's Day shouldn't be the reason you tell them.

Sorry to hear about that Battousai. :( I got a story to share, but I guess that's for another post, If anyone has read Wuthering Heights then you'll understand what I've gone through (me as Heathcliff, oh and minus all the death haha). Anyway, I really wish I didn't start my diet like last week, not the best time to start it I guess. We'll see how long that lasts ^^. Mmmm.....resee cups........

Runai
02-08-2005, 03:03 PM
Battousai, that really sucks. I hope you have found/find someone better for you ^^

Haha, Wuthering Heights. That's a bit extreme isn't it? xD I mean, sure, you're still alive, but what about smashing your head against a tree, and all the 'excavating' business? ... Oh, minus all the death, I see ;)

I don't have much to say for Valentine's Day. It's never conjured up good or bad points really. Just a bit mushy, that's all. Besides, I'm got worse things to worry about, like the fact that I've given up chocolate for lent >=O Bring on pancakes! And Easter!

Valentine's Day should be a day for true love to triumph. <3

Usually, I was sad and alone, until 3 years ago this valentine's day, when my b/f at that time, and I, surprised each other with gifts. Our relationship didn't last (9 months is still pretty good going, but :D), but... Most people know I still have feelings for him. The other day, before he left school, I... told him. *smiles* So, I'm going to send him a card.

I'm single but once I get a boyfriend I'll make sure we're together on valentine's day. After all isn't that what boyfriends are FOR in your teen?

Valentines Day is a twoway street. On one side you got all the singles and ones that hate their relationships with Valentines day reminding them of how depressed they feel. But on the other you got the optimistics and ones in relationships that celebrate the day and the joys of being in a relationship with the one you love. And then you got the kids on the sidewalk begging for candy like it's a parade.

One year I sent my (now ex) girlfriend chocolates and then she was like "I don't really like chocolates, but my family really enjoyed them. Thanks anyway"

Me: T__________________T How can someone not like chocolate? I should have sent her pocky *snerk*

Call it what you want, but I figure any excuse you can get to tell the person you love that you love them is perfectly worthwhile.

It's a pseudo-holiday, on account that like other holidays it has two token colors, encompasses the notion of eating candy--thus endorsing everyone to GET FAT, makes people cry, makes Hallmark richer, is a peace-loving enthusiast with the good intent of seeing that everyone gets a good fuck! There's just one problem, unlike other holidays, I don't get off from school, and I still find this lame.

What's that supposed to mean?? xD Not ALL girls are like that, you know ¬_¬ I don't think its right for guys to spend a lot of money on their girlfriends on valentines. A few years ago when i actually had a boyfriend on valentines xD and we were in the mall (his decision lol) he kept buying me stuff and i got really mad cus he wouldn't listen to me xD But i think valentines isn't really a day to waste money on spoiling your boyfriends/girlfriends, i think it should be a good excuse to have a day off of work to spend time with them (mind you, i'm not saying you shouldn't spend time with them on other days too lol). Although when i say that, i don't mean mushy stuff lol (mushyness REALLY isn't my thing xD but if it's yours then thats great too lol) maybe you could go out and see a movie together (ACTION MOVIES! YEEEEEAAAAAH! Uh..or whatever!) or hire a movie or just go out for the day or something! lol doesn't have to be expensive xD And i don't think the guys should pay for it all either, both should pay ;P

Valentine's Day is always a sit around and mope day for girls. It's pitiful watching girls get all depressed when they dont get any roses or chocolate or a boyfriend to spend the day with. It seems really pointless sometimes..

Nevertheless, I had a great Valentine's Day. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
