So I plan on cosplaying Toph from Avatar at Izumicon 2009. Anyway, I'm looking for a good pattern to use for Toph's outfit from Avatar. Any idea what kind of pattern I should go for? I have no clue. D:

Also, how should I go about making her headband and the things around her wrists and ankles? I have no idea. O__o

To be honest, I've gone through my cosplay "career" without using a single pattern, and Toph's tunic looks pretty basic to do without one, but I'll leave that for someone with pattern experience.

As for the wristbands and anklets, you'd need two pieces of fabric each - one for the smaller part, and one for the wider. (Plus bias tape for the yellow trim) Cut out rectangles for both pieces, the wider part needs to be a bigger rectangle. To sew them together, make sure the wider one scrunches in a bit to match the smaller rectangle, that way it'll fan out. Then just sew the rectangles closed.

Toph doesn't really need a store-bought pattern, I agree. I actually made my own tunic for my Peter Pan costume - all you need is to make your own pattern out of newspaper. ;3 I'm not very good at explaining, so I'm sure you could find something on the net, but for a basic run-down: tape some pieces of newspaper together, hold it up to your body, and outline the shape you want your tunic to be (use it for the back and the front, making sure the seams will meet up on your sides - I messed up my first PP try because the front was too small width-wise), making sure to add about a half-inch all around for seam allowance. Cut your pattern out, pin your cloth to it, cut, and then you're ready to sew!
