Mafia 182: Holiday In Carrot Cake Town

Tucked away on the outskirts of the big city is a little town full of simple folk. They're the kind who still believe in folk tales and togetherness and family values and all that other crap. They've got farms and little inns and shops and shit, totally quaint. Totally quiet. Totally ripe for the picking.

Why that last part? Oh, it's because from the neighboring big city, the mafia has moved into town.

See, turns out our little town is sitting on some primo real estate. It's not just because the place would make a perfect hideout for the gang of criminals, it's because this place is literally sitting on a stockpile of hidden gold, buried for years by the city's founder, former President James K. Polk.

So the Mafia has moved in, ready to take control. As they prepare to take the podium and town square and declare their rightful place with tommy guns a'blazing, they are confronted by the megaphoned voice of Mayor Matt.

"Citizens!" he says, booming over the town, "now, don't get too excited, but the moment you've been waiting for is here! The town has voted, as it does on every issue, and Holiday Month is here! Every day of the month we'll celebrate a different holiday! Hooray!"

"Hooray!" the town cries back.

"Hooray," sighs the mafia.

Looks like they'll have to play by the rules if they want to oust the town. Too bad no one has any idea what they've got in store.

Welcome to Holiday Month, a mafia with a terrible title that I concocted yesterday afternoon and thought was fairly genius, though I'll leave you to be the judge. While we're essentially going to be playing Vanilla Mafia here, there's a bit of a twist I think you'll find out about at the beginning of Day 1. Now, trust me. I haven't steered you wrong yet, have I?

Okay, there was Smash Bros. mafia, but aside from that!

Anyway, signups begin now. I'd love to have upwards of twenty players in this game, because it's gonna become a lot funnier (for me) the more days we get in.

That is a horn blowing, ya mooks. Mayor Matt steps up to the podium in the center of town.

"Welcome one and all to the first day of Holiday Month!" he laughs.

Most of the crowd cheers.

"Now, there are FORTY different holidays we might have today! I wonder which one it will be?"

Mayor Matt reaches his gloved hand into his magnificent mustache. He pulls out a piece of paper and looks coyly at it.

"Why, this is wonderful! What a happy day!

"Today is Truthfulness Day! No players may lie about anything during discussion, including game-related information. Lying will result in loss of their vote the next day."

Mayor Matt crumples the paper up and sets it on fire and then throws the flaming paper to the ground below him, scaring a child.

"Additionally, the new town name has been decided, so Nikki Wright is immune to lynching today!"

The crowd boos as Nikki smiles and poses.

"Yes, yes, hurf-durf," Matt continues, "let Truthfulness Day begin in Carrot Cake Village! Let no one tell a lie, to honor our forefathers who also never lied. Ever. About anything. Including Santa. With seventeen alive, it will take nine votes to lynch! Day will end at 1:30 AM EST! Enjoy! I love you!"

The Mayor pulls a lever next to him and a giant wheel rises from the stage beside him. Written on it are forty different phrases. He spins the wheel and it stops on a green puzzle piece.

"Oh! Well, this is rather unfortunate. Today is Selfishness Day. The first person who casts a vote today triggers and auto-lynch and the person voted for is lynched. However, the person who cast that vote will have to live with their selfish tendencies - they will have three auto-votes against them for the rest of the day. After that, ANOTHER lynch will be carried out as normal.

So that means with fifteen alive, it takes ONE to lynch! Day will end after the second lynch or at 10 AM EST."

"Welp, that was fun! Let's do Selfishness Day again sometime! Nighttime begins now, folks. Send in your night actions by 1 PM EST, please!"

"Ah, my friends," the Mayor begins, "last night was a terrible night indeed. Our good friend, the rulebreaking ig. has passed away of natural causes. Well, I think the knife in his neck was natural. Metal is natural, right? Anyway, ig., Townie Roleblocker, is dead.

"On to more fun matters, today is a very special day... I think. Let's find out!"

The Mayor pulls ig's corpse up from behind the podium. He looks at it with amazement, fluttering about, until finally he pulls a quarter from behind ig's ear.

The town cheers.

Then he flips his hand and the quarter is replaced with a large rose.

The town cheers again.

Finally, he throws the rose into the air and it explodes into fireworks. The fireworks spell out two words:

HAIKU DAY

"Oh, a special day indeed," Mayor Matt smiles. He ducks behind his podium and reappears wearing a kimono and geisha makeup. Strings buzz in the background.

"Today's Haiku Day
It is a great holiday
Can you guess the rules?

"Citizens of Carrot Cake Town!" he laughs, "welcome one and all to a very glorious day! I ate some alphabet soup last night before bed and it spelled the name of today's wonderful holiday!

"Today is Civil Rights Day! To celebrate the emancipation of various groups,

Matt points overhead and an airplane flies by. A small object is pushed out of the side of it and it falls, end over end, until finally it embeds itself in the ground. The winds brush aside part of the bag and it is plainly a familiar face. Her throat is slit, and she's totally a corpse.

While I am not fond of your first assumption, I have been considering that your second has merit. I've noticed Namanda posting actively everyday, at around the same times to be getting Night kills in. Of course, this is not a sure thing either, but I do not hold her in high suspicion at this time. We'll see tomorrow maybe.

I've also had my eye on DonJuan for a while now. He's been a man of few words in this game, and has been the most suspicious to me. He also fits the profile Nikki established yesterday, that at least one kill was made on the EAST COAST.

They're not definitive proof, but it looks suspicious if you were active at the times when all of the kills occurred. You could always have the simple bad luck of being in a similar time zone as a Mafia member.

The Mayor reaches into his mustache. The citizens can only assume he is going to pull out whatever today's Holiday is, but its much worse. He pulls out an entire projector that projects an image on the side of Town Hall.

It's a gruesome image of one of the townies ripped into pieces. It's probably the most disgusting picture ever. It's also Scheris, Vanilla Townie, who has died.

"Well, that's gross. Anyway, today is a very wonderful day! It celebrates our founder, the Napoleon of the Stump, whose gift of gab was like few other!

"Today is James K. Polk Day. There will be NO VOTING today. Instead, players must discuss the game as usual. Whenever they are ready, players must make a post putting forth an argument for who they think should be lynched and WHY. This post must be bolded. Once your argument is put forth, you may not post in the thread again until the day is over. You MUST bold the post you wish to use as your argument.

"At the end of the day, the moderator will decide which player has put forth the best argument and lynch the player of their choice.

"Well, that sounds fun! You guys'll do it, right? Have fun. Arguments are due by 6:30 AM EST. Should give you enough time, because the Mayor has to go to work at 5:30 in the morning, much to his chagrin."

Sirius’s argument for the most likely mafia member:

At this point, to decide who could be Mafia, all we have to go on is elad as the one confirmed Mafia member, and the activity levels of the remaining players. Because the choice to vote out elad was random, and nobody defended her, we cannot discern anything based on her. So we are left with A) activity levels and B) what people have posted.

Let’s start with A) There has been a death every night, so the mafia must have had at least one person active every single night. DonJuan is the ONLY person remaining who has posted every single day, and could theoretically have been around to send in actions every single night. You may argue that I have posted everyday as well, but there was one key Night that I could not have submitted an action:

If you will recall Night 2, it was short and set really early in the morning for anyone not on the East Coast. It is not likely that someone not on the East Coast was active during that time, a profile established by Nikki. I am in California and I slept through that Night.

Reiteration-- There was a kill on that Night.

DonJuan is the only person who matches this East Coast and constant activity profile. Not all mafia members have to be active to send in an action, nor does the same mafia member have to be active every night there is a night kill, but I don’t believe anyone besides DonJuan was likely to be active during that span of time. It seems like he’s the only person around who could have performed a kill on Night 2.

In addition to his activity profile, his posting was most interesting indeed, bringing me to point B) While he posted everyday, he also did not post very much. He peaked in, followed some bandwagons, but mostly stayed in the shadows. He hasn’t defended anyone in particular nor gone after any players beyond bandwagoning. This can be a good technique if you’re trying to keep people from looking at you, which is the type of strategy a mafia member could try to use. It can certainly be argued that it worked. DonJuan has hardly been the center of attention during this game. Meanwhile, our attentions have been focused on other, unfortunate townies.

Because of these reasons, I believe that the most likely candidate at this moment for Mafia is DonJuan.

"Welp. DonJuan, Vanilla Townie, is dead. I think. It's hard to tell from here, but probably dead."

"Not a lot to say today," says the Mayor, rubbing his sleepy eyes, "being a Mayor is a tough job, especially with all these dead people and whatnot. Work is tough, but I got a raise today, and that's a good thing because a Mayor's pay is not as good as you'd think!

"Anywho, I was going on a stroll last night when I came upon this."

The head of a certain player is stuffed and mounted on a plank of wood. It is regal. It is magnificent. It is osparrow, Vanilla Townie, who has died.

"Well, onto the Holiday. Today's day is a special one and I think it comes right in the nick of time. Randomly drawn, we have Newcomer Day!

"Today celebrates two new arrivals to our town! Their allignment and abilities, however, are certainly in question. Let's see how they play out, eh? I'd like to welcome our newcomers, who are in the crowd right now! Welcome Crossfire and Nikki Wright!"

The Mayor points out the two in the crowd and the town cheers.

"Wait," he says, pointing at Nikki, "weren't you dropped out of a plane or eaten by birds or something like that?"

"No," replies Nikki.

Okay, so some quick counting actually makes me think that there are 2 mafia members remaining since at the end of the day yesterday there were 5 people. 3 mafia members and town would have already lost...'~'

I was actually considering that one of the new players would be a serial killer rather than mafia because a) if it's a mafia, they just got a huge advantage so late in the game, and b) we haven't seen any signs of a serial killer yet and it's a pretty traditional role...

I went against my intuition and, of course, chose the wrong person.


Anyway, Serial Killer isn't as required. I doubt Matt would introduce such a role so late to the game, with few players left. Go and look through the first couple of games [at least the first one] - No serial killer to be found there.

So, my theory was incorrect, ugh. Let's.. just focus on the remaining players:

Sirius, you've been on the suspect list of people [townies] many times. You've been responsible for a couple of townies dying, as well. You're incredibly active and, if I do recall, I remember in another game, you mentioned having to be up really early for a class or something. I understand you're in California, but as the majority of the remaining players [I'm not sure of Crossfire's location, but that doesn't matter much] live on the West coast, you can surely understand where I'm going with this, right?

Sapphire, you've been pretty active, but you haven't been saying much when you've been posting. You've been kinda.. reiterating things, jumping on a bandwagon or two, but not really contributing much. It's a good way of flying under the radar, isn't it? Plus, you're FMA's sister, right? I remember her saying she lived in Texas, so you must live in Texas, too. Your state happens to be two hours ahead of mine, in terms of timezones.

Maybe you and Sirius work together.

Lenne has not been very active at all, with her last post being on haiku day [day three], which followed a bandwagon. Does Matt kill for inactivity? Because she hasn't been active in more than two days, making her a prime candidate for modkilling; however, if he does, she's been active enough at night to keep things going for herself. Suspicious.

Same story with Kai - Her last posts fall prior to Haiku Day, and the day following Haiku Day, which was day four. As we are on day 6, I would imagine that Matt would modkill for inactivity.

TheEternalNoob really went along with the East Coast timezone thing. This could be mere coincidence, and I'm not sure if I want to call him on his lack of posts, as that seems to be the way he plays, but.. I don't know, I have an odd feeling..

Let's all also be mindful of the fact that two strong-ish [I say "ish," because I've sucked in recent days] players were nightkilled from the get go. This means that the mafia is fully aware of reasoning skills that certain players possess and wanted that out. Lenne has praised me often for my skills with the game, but she also admitted that she'd never seen ig on the forums until, like, last week. :/ Nothing to be embarrassed about, darling - It's probably for the best that you didn't notice. :P

Then again, I've also played with Sirius, Sapphire and Kai before. Of the three, and I hope no one takes offense to this, Sirius seems to be the smartest, which, naturally, makes me the most suspicious of her.
