The Monster Effect
Using Audition's Default Filters
By: Sapphire
Intro: In this tutorial, I'll be showing you how to mix multiple effects together to make one creepy effect. The effect I'm focusing on right now is the Flanger Filter and the Pitch Shifter Filter to get this effect used in VA Pet Peeves:
Click Here (http://www.box.net/index.php?rm=box_mp3_player_run&id=f_284368588&name=TUT01_Aud02.mp3&myfiles=1)
-------------------------
-------------------------
Free Plugin:
E a s y V o x - F 1.8 (http://terrywest.110mb.com/easyvoxf.html)
This plugin's features looked pretty neat for a free plugin. The 'Double Vocal' feature is the one that you might want to substitute for the Flanger filter. If it's anything like the Doubler filter I have, then it's way better than Flanger. Of course, this is optional. I haven't used this specific filter before, but maybe it'll do you some good. Actually, you won't even have to use this tutorial if you have the Doubler filter...
----------------------------
----------------------------
Tools:
Adobe Audition 2.0 or 3.0
OR
An Audio-Editing program that has the following filters:
- Pitch Shifter (or something similar to it)
- Flanger/Doubler (or something similar t it)
Audio Sample Pak (http://www.mediafire.com/?j0mwqznq4nm) (used as a guinea pig for this tutorial)
*Warning: You can keep the audio, but I ask that you NOT pass it off to anyone or claim it as your own.*
-------------------------
-------------------------
Step 01:
We're going to start out with a sample audio. If you've listened to VA Pet Peeves, then you know that this is the exact same audio I used in scene three--except it doesn't have the creepy effect added to it.
So open up TUT01_Aud.mp3
Step 02:
Image (http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/451/tut01img00.jpg)
We're going to go straight into adding the effects now. So go to EFFECTS>MODULATION>CHORUS.
Step 03:
Image (http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/346/tut01img01.jpg)
Go to the 'Effect Preset' at the top, and go through the drop down menu and pick the highlighted selection, 'Rich Chorus'.
You're going to have to make a few slight changes to this preset, especially to the 'Output Level' at the bottom. Just check each setting and make sure it's the same as the one as the image above.
When you're done, click 'OK'
The audio should sound like TUT01_Aud00.mp3
Step 04:
Image (http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/53/tut01img02.jpg)
Now right click on the file and select ' Copy to New', as shown in the image above. This will make a duplicate of the file.
Step 05:
Image (http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/9429/tut01img03.jpg)
Image #2 (http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/3029/tut01img04.jpg)
Now we're going to change the pitch of the duplicated file. So go to EFFECTS>TIME AND PITCH>PITCH SHIFTER.
Honestly, don't limit yourself to the settings shown in the image above. Just mess around with semi-tones and cents, but don't forget to check 'Low Precision'. It all depends on what you like. If you want to be safe, then just use the settings shown in the image and click 'OK'when you're done.
The audio should sound like TUT01_Aud01.mp3
Step 06:
There's no image for this part, but it's not hard to do at all. Just go to multitrack view and drag the flanger file (step two and three), and the duplicate file that you added the pitch shifter effect to into it's own separate tracks. I put the duplicate in the very first track and the other file in the second one.
Step 07:
Now, go back to the 'Edit View' so we can add one last effect to the duplicate file.
Step 08:
Image (http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3035/tut01img05.jpg)
You're going to go to EFFECTS>REVERB>STUDIO REVERB.
Step 09:
Image (http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3727/tut01img06.jpg)
In the 'Effects Preset' portion of this window, click to open the drop down menu, and choose the preset called 'Drum Plate (small).
Once you've done this, make all the necessary changes as shown in the image above and click 'OK'.
Step 10:
Image (http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2668/tut01img07.jpg)
Now go back to the multitrack view and change the volume of each track as shown in the image above. The point is to make the duplicate file a little louder than the original file. Why? Because we added a reverb to the duplicate so in turn it reduces it's volume, so we need to bump it back up.
Step 11:
Once you're through, go to FILE>EXPORT>AUDIO MIX DOWN...
Save it as whatever type of file you'd like. I chose an mp3.
The end result should sound like the file TUT01_Aud02.mp3
And that's it! Enjoy your monster Chinomi effect! Feel free to ask any questions below! If there's some sort of problem with the tutorial, please let me know!
