Hi everyone. After a long period of waiting for some important Blade Of The Immortal lines… I’m still waiting, and so have decided to endeavour on a small, original project that has been lingering on the mind for a while. Blade is not dead, it’s just in a coma, so my sincere apologies go out to those cast members who have been punctual and haven’t seen anything come from it yet. Chapter 2 will get finished eventually, and hopefully subsequent chapters will follow. However, for now:
Tale of a girl – Audio Drama
Background
This is a kind of spin-off from a larger story I’m writing, in which the protagonists are ‘gifted’ individuals and groups, who have trouble sharing the things that make them special. They either try and isolate themselves, or are forced to. Some wish to make the world recognise and understand their talents, while others will make them understand no matter what.
The focus of this segment is on a child who has been neglected and ill-treated. She doesn’t feel like anything special, and often despises the position she’s been born into, but counts herself lucky compared to most. She has no idea of the enormous, terrible power within that completes her. This tale tells us of her discovery of this power, and what it will eventually mean for her.
This may progress strangely at first, as I’d like for the narration to be the main guidance of the story. In this opening chapter, there is little input from any actual characters, but they are still vastly important, and I’d like for any selected actors/actresses to be prepared for anything in later chapters.
Roles
Girl
Female / late teens / soft voice type
Thanks to her lonely past and seemingly empty future, the title role is quiet and meek despite her busy mind. She takes few things for granted, but hides hatred for much in the world. Yet she is still very capable of happiness.
01 – “She doesn’t enjoy you.”
02 – *Stifled gasp of panic.*
03 – “Can you help me feel the ocean again?”
Man
Male / mid thirties / low voice type
A wretched parasite of a human being. A faceless dealer who has seduced and trapped the girl’s mother in another of her meaningless and harmful romances. His voice should be pretty deep and menacing, without sounding like too much of a ‘villain’. Just an evil, dominating male.
01 – “Did you come for a fix as well?”
02 – *An array of screams; awful pain is being inflicted.* [ I know this is difficult and harsh on the vocal cords, but your bravery will be saluted. I would like to be traumatised by the noises you make =) ]
Mother
Female / late twenties / any voice type
A woman who puts the well-being of her daughter way behind her own petty desires. Ultimately she would probably like to find a partner who can provide for them both, but shows no intent of moving beyond her obsession for dangerous hedonism.
(In these initial lines, she is drugged almost to a point of OD)
01 – “Hello sweetie.”
02 – *A long, horrible laugh that should never be made by a mother; she is senseless because of the dosage, and finds amusement in the torture of her daughter.*
Narrator
No specific gender or age / mature, calm voice type
A lot of the original prose will be read out by the narrator, so they should have a clear, fairly sophisticated tone, able to adapt to the atmosphere of the scene. If female, I’m thinking somewhere along the lines of Claudia Wolf from Silent Hill 3 (click here for a sample: http://www.bsimpsonart.homestead.com/files/Narrator_sample.mp3). If absolutely necessary, the narrator may be self-cast, but don’t let that stop you auditioning, as it’s only a slim possibility.
01 – “She longed for even a nightmare; something besides the repeating darkness to fill her eyes.”
02 – “She swayed against the wall, propped up by one shoulder, feet dragging across the cobble stones and tiny oceans.”
03 – “The girl was panting now, and looked over at her mother, whose empty, bloodshot eyes glistened as she began to cackle.”
Guidelines
- Please record at a sensible human sample rate of 44100, stereo channels, and 16-bit resolution.
- When it comes to noise and distortion and all that jazz, try your best to avoid it or clear it up. I’ll pitch in at my end as well, but it’s best to receive it as clean as possible.
- Save your lines as separate MP3s, with filenames of <username_character_01>
- Compressing the files would be convenient, so (if you have WinZip or WinRar), pack them up and label them <username_TOAG> (what a pretty name. Pronounce it like ‘toad’!)
- Include some sort of text-like frenzy of contact details, as well as your résumé if you so wish.
- Via the use of an electronic messaging device, send all the stuffs to rjl_simpson[at]hotmail.com. Seasonal greetings get you extra points, and you’ll be my best friend.
There are no deadlines right now, but I’d love to get some lines for test mixing as soon as possible. If you have any questions or abuse, send them with your lines, or post on here, or PM me.
Thanks very much to you!
