I thought I'd try cosplaying at Anime Boston this year. So, to save money I was going to make my own costume. I thought I'd go as Kuchiki Rukia in her shinigami outfit. I can make the top alright but I'm going to have a little trouble with the hakama pants. Do any of you have patterns and/or advice for me? It'd really be appriciated!
Ah, here's a picture of Rukia:
[Edit] Thanks for your advice! The Cosplay was a success!

Doesn't seem so difficult. I would find 2 robes (One solid black and one solid white), probably a wig if you don't want to dye your hair black, and for the sword: You're better off using a bokuto (A wooden sword). They're between $15 and $20 at my military store so it might be the same price depending on the conditions.
I'm probably going to Anime Boston too. Hopefully I'll see you there.

I cosplayed Kyouraku Shunsui a couple years ago so I'll give you what I did.
First is the shihakushou (uniform). Look for a pattern from a halloween catalogue for a karate gi or samurai yukata and use that for the white and black gi. Make sure that at least the black one is long enough to nearly reach your knees or else the pants will show whatever you're wearing underneath the costume... if you are wearing anything under it (which would be a wise choice of action). I enlarged the sleeves a lot and cut triangles out of the underarm portion of the black gi. The hakama (pants) I wasn't able to find a pattern for so I winged it and made patterns based on pictures of real hakama. It helps if you find a diagram of how to put them on since it will show several angles. I didn't want to go through the trouble of having to put them on traditionally, so I sewed a black elastic band into the loops on the front and back. It is also important that you pleat the hakama all around starting from the front where you would normally tie the sash. The intervals at which you pleat it depends on the size of your hakama. Try to keep it even. The sash was different for Kyouraku since he wears a light blue one about twice as long as a normal shinigami, but it's the same concept. Make a long white sash that you can wrap, starting from the front, around your waist twice and tie into a bow. Finally, look online for the straw sandals and tabi socks. Unless you want to weave the sandals yourself. >.>;
As for the sword and wig. I made half wood, half foam replicas of his shikai, but if you don't feel like doing something like that, then get a bokuto like The Hunter said. I dunno if it'll be peace bound since it doesn't have a blade, but either way, you'll be better off than taking in a real sword and getting ugly florescent zip ties all over it. The wig you can probably find easily if you need it. Just look for a good wig store for a black wig and cut and style it to look like her hair.
Finally, make sure the material you get is breathable. Say no to stuff like satin or silk and yes to brocade and cotton. It'll be cheaper that way, too.
Well there's my input. Hope it helps. :)
By the way, you're lucky she wears the tabi... Shunsui's barefoot in his sandals. I think I might have scraped off all the calluses on my feet by the end of that con. >.>;

Do you know how to sew? Because honestly, hakama are tricky little devils (I own a couple). There are a couple patterns for hakama online, but if you can find a "costume" version, that's probably better.
(Oh, and you're likely to get better advice at cosplay.com)

Well... I wouldn't be the one doing the sewing. I'd be helping with the sewing. Basically that means I'll hold stuff, sew straight lines, and wander about being all confused and useless. And cut things. Maybe. I'm not quite sure whether or not that is a good idea.
Anyway, the people I sew with seem to know what they're doing so I think it'll turn out all right. Well, at least, I hope so. ^^
