Christmas Shopping
A romantic comedy for the holidays
Since coming to the VAA a couple months ago, I've been experimenting a lot with mixing my own voice with background music, sound effects and that sort of thing. I still need practice, though now I'd like to put my efforts into something more worthwhile than my own random lines, which is why I decided to try a little radio play.
THE STORY
The script, written by a close friend, is primarily dialogue between the two characters, Elaine and Jack, who have been telling their parents they have lovers for the past two years, when in truth they have been tragically single. In a desperate attempt to find someone, Elaine sets them both up on dates with people she found through personals ads in the paper. Awkwardly, the man turns out to be Elaine's father, and the woman turns out to be Jack's mother.
EDIT: Because my webhost has been crashed for a couple of days now, I don't have a copy of the script online. I'll be more than happy to email it to anyone who wants to read, though!
Obviously, the RP will NOT be completed by Christmas time :( It just happened to have a holiday theme.
THE RULES
o1 The deadline for all auditions is Monday, December 27th.
o2 Keep background noises to a minimum.
o3 Save as .mp3.
o4 Label lines yourname_character_##.mp3(Stellar_Elaine_01.mp3).
o5 Include a text file containing your name and contact information.
o6 Zip up all auditions and information into a file titled yourname_CS.zip(Stellar_CS.zip).
o7 Send auditions to xstellar@gmail.com or catch me on AIM: teh hardcat
THE LINES
Elaine Simmons - Huge part - Female - 21 years old - Very sarcastic and high strung, often nervous or excited about something. She does most of the talking.
Voice: In the medium range, articulate, chatty.
o1: This is so pathetic! I should just TELL my father that I haven't been on a date since Jordan left me.
o2: You know what I mean! Come on, there are tons of ads and a lot of people to choose from. It's easier than Christmas shopping for people who don't exist. Listen to the one I found for you. [Reads:] Attractive caucasian female, enjoys skiing, cute dogs, younger men and- get this- WATCHING FOOTBALL.
o3: Don't worry! I'll be there as back up! You see, I have a date with a certain someone tomorrow, at the Coco Cabana Cafe, at 1 o'clock. That way, if either of our dates turns out to be a creep, we can bail each other out.
Jack Livingston - Huge part - Male - 21 years old - Very laid back, relaxed and casual.
Voice: Casual and easily sarcastic. However, don't give me a surfer/stoner voice.
o1: You tried that, remember? He thought you were joking and started laughing about [imitating MAX'S voice] 'what a prankster you are.'
o2: Can we go inside? It's 5 minutes after 1, she's probably already in there. Besides, I'm freezing.
o3: I couldn't possibly match up to your father, but do you want to get a cup of coffee with me instead?
Gretchen Livingston - Small part - Female - 46 years old - A soccer mom.
Voice: Chatty, generic, motherly, nurturing. Not too high, but nothing low.
o1: I'm so glad to finally meet you. Jack talks about you all the time. You're a photographer, right?
o2: Oh! Well hello there! I'm Jack's mother. He talks about your daughter non-stop. I can tell she's a very lovely girl.
o3: Ms. Livingston, but please, call me Gretchen. The pleasure is mine, sir.
Max Simmons - Small part - Male - 49 years old - A trucker.
Voice: Big, loud, borderline obnoxious. Warm. He's a big man with a big voice. I need someone who can portray this. I think a deep Texan accent could work, but just play with it.
o1: Lainie? ELAINE SIMMONS! What are you doing here? Why the heck didn't you come in? I looked up from my coffee and saw you standing out here in the cold.
o2: Now I'll bet my left toe you're Jack, that boyfriend Lainie likes to go on about.
o3: I'm here to meet someone I met through the paper, but it doesn't look like they're coming. Perhaps you'd like to join me for a cup of coffee? It's cold out!
Have I forgotten anything? Well then, have at it!
