It must be something like that because this is the only forum I go on where people spend more time ass licking than flaming each other. Granted this seems to be the way a lot of (far too many) people get parts, so perhaps without it the AVA world would fall apart because suddenly people would have to have actual talent rather than just hanging around name dropping and sucking up to senior members for parts.

As much as sucking up really isn't what you're looking for, being civil is a good thing. I mean, what would you prefer? Peace and quiet? Or flame wars, right before Christmas? We've had some pretty scary moments here at VAA over the last few months owing to flame wars. Isn't it nice to have peace for once?

And Mongoose, what are you talking about with "sucking up to get parts"? As long as I've been here, I've never really seen this to be the case. Not even within the last month or two.

I'm going to say something that I said earlier in an LJ reply. Most of the time, people "suck up" (urgh, I hate that term) because they genuinely admire or look up to people. You can't tell me that all of you don't have somebody you look up to in some way. It's just that some people can't quite get the balance right between "sucking up" and treating people with all due respect.

My message to you tonight is to BE RESPECTFUL. Just don't let it get out of hand. Peace is good, so let's keep it peaceful. ^_^

Okay, I was a little harsh the other day (I'm very, very tired). It is nice that there's not constant flaming here, but lots of people don't post decent criticism either. It's all 'Wow [insert name here]! You were super great! *huggles*'. Or the worst thing I've seen anybody post as a critiscism on anything, be it a fanfic, RP, piece of artwork:

What I'm saying is that though it's good to be nice sometimes, it's infuriating when you get people saying really dull, nice comments that don't teach anybody anything just to keep the peace. Or only posting critiscism for new members and not saying anything bad if the person is more experienced than you.

I think a lot of people in general also have a hard time accepting compliments. For some strange reason, it's easier for many to be negative, or to think others will be negative / neutral towards them.

Homework for everyone:

1) This week, whenever someone gives you a compliment, say 'Thank you!'

2) Whenever you give someone a compliment and get the reply, 'Thank you!' , leave it at that.

Yes, I agree with Danae on the fact that there's a LOT of sucking up to the admins and people that are admired. Unfortunately, this happens in almost EVERY FORUM or workplace, or anything. Always trying to be the teacher's pet so you can get the grade, or constant flirting with the football captain to be popular. It's just kinda what people do. But I don't think that just telling people to quit will make them stop. I've been trying something like this for the past 6 months on another forum, but it doesn't work. (Of course, with 5000+ members, it's hard to get anyone to do anything...) I haven't figured out a great plan, either...

And, regarding the little "this is good. teehee i lurv it" type comments... I don't think many people really likes them all that much. I'd rather have one good long comment about how much something sucks than one little comment of two words.

So... that's my two cents. Make of it what you will. ^_^
