View Full Version : How hard is it for you to find good bgm?

Because I'm having a really hard time with it. XD

I have no clue how to remove the background music from an anime and I wouldn't want it to sound all jarbled up.

So that only leaves the option of finding original tracks that fit the mood. But it's hard when you don't want it to sound too commercial! :?

Maybe I'm too picky?

What exactly are you looking for BGM for?

I find that it's always best to recreate the scenes from scratch. That means relocating the background music and sound effects from available resources (i.e: The OST's and sites that have free sfx for download)

This way it sounds clean and professional as opposed to the sloppy sound of a vocal ripped audio. So...I'm not sure what you mean by 'too commercial"

Erica : There's a particular background song in Kamisama Kazoku when Osamu (the father) is talking about how he heard his son wishing his school could keep bloomers.

Kei: By "too commercial," I mean I don't want people to hear it and be too reminded of something completely different. For example, there's a really goofy scene and you want to put in carnival-like music in that scene BUT you don't want to put in clown-car music.

Well, if you use music from Naruto, of course most people will know it's from there. That doesn't mean you can't use it. I know a bunch of fandubs that use Naruto OST's in a bunch of anime's they dub. Does anyone say anything? No, not really.

Usually the comments on OSTs anyway are "Hey, good job using music that fits", "It's too quiet", "It's too loud", and "the music doesn't relate to the scene".

Just use the OSTs, pop/rap/electronica/rock albums and songs, and loops you have to good effect and no one will really care that much where it came from. Just make sure it fits the scene and doesn't overpower the VAs and sound effects but at the same time not be so quiet so it can't lend power to the scene.

For anime, finding OST's are really easy.

There's actually a site where they have a wide variety of anime OST's that you can download. The original site is down, but they have a backup.

But when it comes to cartoons, there usually aren't any OST's for cartoons, so I'll have to find some that fits either on newgrounds...or my new favorite, sounddogs. xD;;

Doing a method what FMA suggests is really grey area. On one hand, that is undoubtedly illegal. On the other, you're just using it as BGM, you're not distributing it anywhere. At the same time, buying imported CDs is expensive and you have to make a grey area modification to your PC to play and rip the discs so you can use them.

So, basically, you're tiptoeing one helluva line either way you do it.

American/Western TV shows and movies frequently have OSTs released, such as LOST, Bourne Identity, Black Hawk Down, etc., those are options as well. Problem is that many film scores are too recognizible. However, I would recommend looking into the catalogs of Michael Giacchino and John Powell, I've always found their scores quite impressive.

Check out http://incompetech.com/

All of the music is free to use as long as you credit him. And there are some really, really wonderful pieces there.

You sure? It looks kinda fishy (though no more fishy than the sites that carry the video game/anime BGM that we so love using).

Quoted from http://www.ocremix.org/info/Content_Policy

OverClocked ReMix grants all parties a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, universal license to use, redistribute, incorporate into other works, and publicly perform OverClocked ReMixes as long as the following criteria are met:

A.) No profit is made from the exercise of this license. This includes but is not limited to incorporation of OverClocked ReMixes into commercial works, charging more than the cost of the delivery means or medium(s) for redistributing OverClocked ReMixes, or redistributing OverClocked ReMixes in the context of commercial advertisements. Live performance or playback of OverClocked ReMixes may occur in commercial, for-profit spaces such as stores, private clubs, or other gatherings, so long as no cost is explicitly associated with listening to them and no endorsement of the commercial entity by OverClocked ReMix can be inferred.

B.) If OverClocked ReMixes are being redistributed, performed, or incorporated into other works, materials used must be clearly attributed both to the ReMixer(s) who created them and to OverClocked ReMix. This accreditation must be in the form of the ReMixer name(s) followed by "OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org)". In applicable contexts where user interactivity is possible, such as websites, the site name and URL must be linked to http://www.ocremix.org. Accreditation must be presented as close to the utilized material as possible; if OverClocked ReMixes are used in a video, accreditation must be included in credits at the end, but if displayed on a website, accreditation must be prominently displayed in context with the utilized material. In the case of public or semi-public performances where accreditation is not reasonable, responding to audience inquiries with this information will suffice.

C.) If OverClocked ReMixes are being redistributed, they may not be modified in any way from the MP3 versions made available on http://www.ocremix.org. This includes but is not limited to any modifications to ID3 tagging. Modifications for personal use not involving redistribution, such as burning personal mix CDs or reformatting files for other devices, is acceptable.

There's a site which offers different kinds of music, and they're free to use:

http://www.freeplaymusic.com

P.S. It's completely safe, since once at our school we were asked to only use this site to download music for a presentation we were doing (On school computers, which basically block every fishy site that there is, including YouTube and Facebook).

Hope I've helped in some way!
