So you want to know how you stand against your fellow auditionees. That's completely understandable. But PLEASE keep in mind that not all producers have the time to critiques to everyone who asks for them!
Believe it or not, there are a few projects that can rack in over 50 auditions before the deadline is up. And let's just saaaay everyone auditions for an average of 3 characters each. Now let's do the math here..
50 auditioners x 3 clips each auditioner = ...150 sound files to listen to!
Holy cow! That's a LOT. Now imagine if EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON who auditioned asked for a critique... would you really want to be the producer who had to deal with an extra work load like that?
With that in mind, it's fairly reasonable for a producer to state that they won't be giving out any critiques. DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU'RE AUTOMATICALLY ENTITLED TO A CRITIQUE JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE SHELLING OUT TIME TO AUDITION. Do you know how long a good fandub takes to make? Producers are taking up a lot of their own valuable time to [possibly] get YOUR voice out there when they finish a project. No one in this process is getting paid. This is just a hobby for everyone involved.
But by chance, if the producer DOES decide to give critiques, please keep the following in mind:
- Please PLEASE do NOT harass a producer for a critique. Each producer has their own way of doing things. They might give you a critique right after they recieve your audition, they might do it right before casting, or maybe even after casting. (This is assuming that the producer actually follows through with giving critiques, as promised, of course. Which they SHOULD since it kind of says something about their credibility as well. But in the case that they don't, please be polite when asking them for a critique they said they would give you.)
- Just because the producer happens to like your audition a LOT and gives you some AWESOME feedback does not necessarily make you a shoe in for a role! There will most likely be plenty of others who audition after you, so that leaves a lot of room for *GASP* someone who might be better fit for the role than you! Hard to believe, I know, but we DO have quite a few talented people on the board. It's quite the insult for the producer to have to deal with unneccessary drama of people who can't be good sports about this.
- Critiques are given as an ultimate favor. They're aren't normally given in the professional VA world. So be thankful. It isn't something a producer HAS to do as a requirement.
- Do NOT take critiques personally! (Unless someone is rude enough to be like "LOL U SUX", but let's hope everyone acts like adults here..) Critiques are given to help you! If your flaws are pointed out, it's not the end of the world! Just think of it as something for you to improve on for the future! "Rome wasn't built in a day" after all. I would think the same goes for your VA skills? (I can personally attest to that, actually.)
- If a producer says that you're really great, don't ultimately take it straight to your head and think you're the 'official' voice of ANYTHING. All producers look for different things and you may be setting yourself up for a big letdown if you think otherwise.
