For AX and Comic-Con, I am planning to do the Mario Kart version of Princess Peach. I just bought the dress, but wig styling is going to be another issue all together.
In this version, Peach has her usual flippy bangs, but her hair is in a ponytail as seen here:

How would I style a wig like this, and what products to use? If at all possible I would prefer to do it myself because I don't have a lot of extra funds for commissions right now ;;

Buy some Got2B freeze blasting spray (it comes in a weird yellow bottle. It's like $5 at Wal-Mart here) and start spraying that sucker up using your hands to shape it.
You might need som extra hands D:
Er... and here's a sort of tutorial for parting ponytails in wigs? http://www.katiebair.com/wigtutorial_parting.html

Nice! Thanks for the recommendation - I'll have to check that out =)
I'm not sure how to do a single ponytail, though... o_O Like, since it's just one I don't think it would need the part, but I'm not sure how to put it up to where you don't see wig netting.

It might be more expensive, but if you haven't bought the wig yet, you could buy a short blonde wig, and then get a ponytail extention to match it? That way you won't have to worry about netting showing~

The tutorial I posted shows how to make a parting in the wig to cover the netting for pulling a single ponytail up.
Or if you want to go the easy way out, get a ponytail extention like Kitsune suggested. It's more expensive, yeah, but it saves you the work since modifying wigs is a pain as far as I can tell.

Heya.
If you're putting a wig up into a ponytail you're going to need to sew in wefts underneath the base wigs ponytail area. Depending where you got your wig they may have similar coloured wefts for you. Otherwise you'll have to make your own by buying the same wig again. I think it's Katie bear who also has a tutorial for making non sew wefts as well.
I did hear someone say once you can tie the bottom part of the wig into a ponytail and the top part into a ponytail then join the two together in one ponytail without it showing too much netting but it'll depend on how thick your wig I suppose.
My Wig however (Yoko wig in signature) is a short base wig with extensions added. This can work also if you find a base wig that does clip on extensions (cosplaywig on ebay do these) which would be easier for a novice.
Good luck!

Unfortunately, I am completely new to wig design things as for all my other cosplays I was fortunate enough to be able to use the wigs as-is with little modifications. I may just do Peach's regular hair as I really don't want to screw it up...

Really even Peaches normal hair isn't easy. Not a beginners wig anyway, but I'm sure you'll be okay! Can I ask which base wig you bought? I may be able to help you some more.

This one. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=110251690600) I'm going to cut and style the bangs of course, but I'm not sure what else to do with it.

Mmm, it might actually be easier to get a shorter wig, then make a ponytail piece with another wig. There was someone who did that here (http://community.livejournal.com/cosplay/2621128.html) with a Yoko Ritona wig that turned out absolutely gorgeous in my honest opinion. Might be a bit weighty, though; it'll probably be your easiest bet, though.

Okay, if you were doing regular Peach you could work with that. However finding clip on extensions in that particular blonde might be hard. Are there any markets/malls/hairdressers in your area that sell extensions? Only because then you can take the wig with you and match a ponytail clip on extension to your wig.
If you want a gamble and you don't mind too much the prospect of the extension possibly being a little off there are plenty of clip on extensions in blonde on ebay.

She has a blue hairband between the pontail and the top part of her hair so even if it was a little out it probably wouldn't be very noticeable. I suggest having a good hard look around for one that you can match the best. At least they aren't too expensive anyway. ^^
You might have to chop off a lot of hair on your base wig, so take it slowly and good luck. Foam wig heads are always useful to do styling on if you don't have one. They're only a few dollars generally and a) it's a lot easier than trying to style it on your head and b) it means you can stick pins and what not into it to keep it still.

I hope I've been some help, good luck! If you run into any problems just post here and I'll seee what I can suggest.

*pokes to signature* that's what I did too. And yes it could work with Peaches style but I expect she doesn't want to spend too much money on buying other wigs. ^^
That wig looks quite a bit too short for Yoko though imo. Mine goes past my butt.

I totally agree with Ai-Honey and Sheepmage. If you pull the wig up into a ponytail, you can take an extension which will help make the ponytail much thicker. I used a similar method for my Chibiusa wig - I bought a long wig and short, "China Doll" wig. I put the long wig into pigtails and cut the pigtails very short. Then I took the short wig, cut it right down the middle of the part and used each half for the fake pigtails on each side of the wig. I just glued them onto the wig and stuffed some styrofoam underneath (to add volume to the pigtails) and viola - done!
Here's a picture of the finished product: http://rynn.darkain.com/cosimages/chibi4.jpg
Unfortunately its more expenisve to buy an extension/second wig but that's really the only way to create the kind of volume that Peach's ponytail has. It seems like a daunting project for a beginner but its not as difficult as it seems! Just take your time and if you mess up on the bangs you can always wash out the hairspray and start over. Good luck to you!

It turns out I don't have the time or money to do the ponytail version so I went with the regular one and used hairspray for styling---[see it here (http://myspace.com/innersakura)] but the only problem is getting the style to stay after a day or so of wear, because I currently have to touch up the hairspray every time I wear it again and as a result the wig is getting a bit stiff.
