I, personally, think it would be great if we reignited the old tradition of AnimeCentral in Chicago.
http://www.acen.org
ACen used to be the BIG AVA gathering, with all of the oldbies like myself, Kristy, Kelsie, Danae, Lilly, Vicky, Sora, Rasha, Stephy, etc etc etc gathering with some of the lesser-knowns like St.Nick and Generic Rick. It was HUGE... pretty much the origin of the AVA panel AND the famous VA Suite that Rasha ran up until last year. It's the third biggest con in the nation, and a fabulous spectacle that everyone always enjoys. It's not AS overwhelming as Otakon or AX, so we could all be together without being stifled, but it's still right up there in quality. Not only is it a wonderful con, but there's LOTS to see and do... top-notch guests, an amazing cosplay roster, and tons of dances and crazy games to entertain the masses. ...plus, it's the way things used to be, and would be a nice walk down memory lane. 2k5 will be my fifth year there, and I've never loved anything more.

I admit, if a majority of people wanted a midwest con, ACen would be the primo candidate for the job.
If I end up doing the coordinating for the con and people were acceptable with AX, it'd be a lot easier for me to plan. But the main deal I'm wanting to nail is travel. So this gives people the chance to voice where they'd like to go.

Anime Expo first and foremost. Otakon would be my second choice since I'm already planning on attending (this is going to be home to the CFW meeting, in addition to the VAA meeting if it's held there). I would love to attend Acen on account that it seems to have a good hold over dances and such, but it is held in May. I'll have to look into it more.

Much as holding a meet in London would be practical for both the Brits and other European or Asian VA's, it would probably suck. If it is anime you want then you are best off going somwhere that does decent conventions.
From a distance (and cost) point of view, east coast conventions would be a hell of a lot closer to fly to than West for those people that are busting a gut to fly all the way to the US.

Sadsiren
10-03-2004, 01:05 AM
The reason I propose it with a con is because con = discount hotel rates and some structured stuff to do as ice breakers for meeting up. It's also a bit safer to say "Oh I'm going to an anime convention!" than to say "Oh I'm staying with some online friends I've never met before for a week/weekend!" This gives parents other people and places to call if God forbid something were to happen.
Honestly, the biggest thing that kept people from going to AWA was $$$ and parents concerned for their children. School too, for the more dedicated students...
Velvy

Y'know, I seem to remember on iparty some of you mentioning among others that an anime con would be a more ideal place to hold a VAA meeting. Cost wise, effort wise, that's where anime conventions come into play.
As far as a non-convention oriented meeting goes, Las Vegas all the way. Orlando has lots to do as well (if you're looking for the discount hotel rates, they've got plenty of package deals here).
Disneyland as Maeko said, it ain't all that its hyped up to be. I went and did everything I needed to do within a day.

Yay. Someone else who plugs in for Disney World in Florida.
And for those, who are concerned that they can't go BECAUSE there isn't a con, there actually is going to be one in Orlando in early August, 2005... here is the link: http://www.animefestivalorlando.com/
Lol. As tempting as Las Vegas is, not everyone is 21... which I think you have to be to really enjoy the place fully. :P

Then we'll save Vegas for VAA meeting 2006 (since I'll be 21 by then).
The lines at Disneyland aren't nearly as long as four hours. It's still fun, but like I said, everything you want to do you should be able to do within a day. I found Disney World to be a lot more fun than Disneyland, but Disney World's broken down into four parks which may be why. Disneyland has two.

I say Disneyland in Florida, simply because its much more accessible (butchered that word) for me. *waves "I'm just 16" flag around* I can actually drive there, and afford it a hell of a lot easier than a plane trip somewhere across the country or overseas.
But I'm still going to Otakon 05' regardless if anyone else goes. >D

My main idea for the Disneyland thing is that we go only once. Afterall, we have the con as a backup. I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a dual-pass for both Disneyland and California Adventures, but if there is, thats another option to consider if you guys really think DL is too kiddy for you all. ;P I, personally, think DL is a blast!
So yeah. Probably no more than one day. We'd all still be close to the con. Hotels in that area always have some kind of packaged deal going on because of the local theme parks. And most importantly, we'd all be together. ^^
AX05. What more could you want? Er, besides money. heh...

Uuuuuuug, fuck coooons.
Everyone just come and stay at my house, dammit.

As for DisneyWorld, uh, yeah right. Most of the hotels are freaking $400 a night and they are TINY. I'm not shelling out that much cash to be stuck in a 4x4 closet with the lot of you. As much as I love you all, people annoy me. x.x;

I think some of you aren't comprehending how many people and the cost this gather would entail. There were a total of 19 people staying in Atlanta, only 5 of which were at Matt's. Then there were roughly 6 others who made other accommodatons. That makes a whopping total of 25 people. I don't know of ANYONE who could house THAT MANY PEOPLE in ONE PLACE. That means some, if not most, would be staying at a hotel. Our rooms at the Renaissance Waverly in Atlanta were each 106 a night plus $36 in taxes. Regularly that room would be $165-$219 a night plus taxes, depending on the time of year. I figure the hotels in Anaheim are similar if not *more* costly, at regular price. This is why it is EXTREMELY important that we go when there is *some* event involved that would give hotel discount rates.
Whether you go to the convention or not is your own choice. You can choose to stay at the hotel at its discounted rate and just not go to the con at all. But there's no way a big gather like we had in Atlanta can happen without hotel rooms involved, and people won't be able to afford it if there isn't a discount from an event like a con involved.
Comprende?

Well, I most definately would not be able to go to Disney World. When I went in 2000, the whole thing was such a financial strain on my parents - the flight, the accomadation, the entrance to the parks, food.
Some of us don't have jobs that pay that high, or the time to take a holiday to Florida. I know that the vast majority on these boards are students, and that is where the vast majority of MY money goes.
AX would probably be easier for the UK people (and various Americans), I can imagine, or a smaller theme park at least, for a weekend. Major cash flow issues. Some of us aren't lucky to be rich :P Chaa.
That and, I'd probably have more fun at an American con, than DisneyWorld. They took away Alien Encounter which was the BEST RIDE EVER :( :(

No con? NO CON? OMG, I had SO much freaking fun at the convention! What's wrong with you people? Karaoke at midnight and Raves at 2am may not be your style, but it suited Velv and I just fine and stuff like that wouldn't exactly be feasible if there was no con. Why the hell NOT a convention? Don't tell me "money issues." Puh-lease. No one forces you to buy anything. Hell, you don't even really need to pay for a badge. If you want to enter a room that requires a badge, borrow a badge from someone not using one. And if you despise the idea of a convention because of smelly otaku and/or creepy/scary anime cosplayers stay in your room and chat, or get out of the hotel. I'm going to AX. End of story. Nyo.

Why no con?
BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE.
:D <333333
It's all well in good for you social butterflies, but I am not good around that many people and only one or two people noticed but by Friday night (after being there for like, a day and a half) I was already having panic attacks and major issues due to the amount of people constantly around me.
That's why I'd enjoy a private setting a bit more. I would enjoy it so much more if we all just like...stayed at someone's house! And we could do whatever we want all weekend. Split off into groups and go see a movie or go downtown or do anything we wanted and then all meet up for dinner...no crazy con schedules, no cosplay hasstles, no extra fees for anything. I'd be more than happy to do something like that.

As much as I would like to met everyone at a con… I like the idea of a non-con meeting too. An ava… Vacation!
My opinion on some of the places so far:
-Both the Disneys are a okay in my book. I've always wanted to go to DisneyLAND (been to world 4 times and going to be going again in May) but I could always go while at AX
-With Vegas, it may be 21 to gamble, but there is PLENTY of stuff for underage people to do. I’ve been there twice before I turned 16 and had a great time! I loved that fact that every arcade you walk into you find at least one DDR machine. They even have this giant three story arcade with rock climbing wall. Damn! Now I want to go back to Vegas!
But as for cons, I’m pretty sure that I am going to make it to Otakon this year (now that I found a group of local people that want to go AND some Baltimore locals that will let us stay with them for free) but I am planning on trying to a west coast con too. Nanu wants me go join her at Fanime, but I’d go to AX instead (Sorry Nanu).
I SWEAR to you all though! Whatever we pick at the con meeting, I WILL be there! After the crap my mother pulled on me this year with AWA, I am going no matter what she tells me. AX would be good to since school is out. Yeah AX all the way! And Otakon for us East coast peeps too!

Danae - that'd be awesome, except you'd be in jail.. and it just wouldn't be the same without you.
Kitsune - As for hotel prices, I can't be sure what the price during the con will be. Typically, the hotels' rate's change a bit for big events such as conventions and whatnot. It also depends on whether or not you want to share a room with anyone, or get your own room.
At AWA, we had two rooms for our group (along with the people staying at Matt's house) and the prices for the room was pro-rated based on how many nights you were staying at the hotel. I think the most expensive was.. 70-ish for the entire weekend or something like that.
Right now, the only hotel group-rate in the not-too-far-future I've found was at another hotel.. and it was 129-49 per night. I don't know how many people are going, or how many rooms will be necessary, so I can't really give you a figure. I mean.. up until the week before AWA, the figures were constantly changing.. so. Yeah. We'll see. I don't expect it will be too expensive, though. ^.^

Well, it sounds like that (for the majority) we should meet NEAR a Con, but not necessarily FOR a Con. I, personally, could probably make it anywhere in the US. Since it was brought up to me, I might like to do costuming a little. Yes, I can sew and knit. Don't you all look at me that way. :P
I probably won't do everything Con-related, but meeting people from VAA is something I'd like to do. I probably would treat it more like a vacation than anything like: "WHOLE GROUP MOVES TO ROOM AND HAS SANDWICH FOR 30 SECONDS BEFORE NEXT EVENT". While I agree that Con-related-area would provide structure, I'm not interested in a fanatical pace. :?
Yes, raves are not my style...anymore.
@Matt: Talk to me about Boston will you? :D
@Fiona: That's so sad. I would want to meet you and say hi. :(
@Mink: Be a first for me too if I was able to go. It would be cool to see you, though. :)

:? No worries about that. Just because we're going to a convention doesn't mean you have to do all of the convention-related events. I didn't. I really only went for the people, and, I think the only con related things I did was - go to an VA panel.. watch some animé with Serena and Edwyn.. go to the games room, like, once.. and I walked around the dealer's room a few times. I would have liked to attend the Rose Ball, though. >D
Anyway. There's a lot of stuff to do outside of the actual convention itself.. even if you're just hanging out with some people getting to know them better. No one's going to *force* you into the convention areas. We just prefer these meet-ups to be at a convention because of the awesome discount rates that the hotels provide for an event such as a this.. as well as the group rates and the like. That, and.. if people are bored, there's definitely something going on to keep everyone entertained.

I'm pretty sure the votes were in favour of AX.

I don't know if AX has been made official or not, but I'm already thinking transportation. lol
Is anyone from the east driving west? As in, through Chicago? I don't know if Danae would still be able to attend, but I have another friend who is a college boy who wouldn't be able to afford flying and would need to hitch a ride (and I'm sure he'd chip in for gas). I know there may or may not be a Florida roadtrip, but how about a little more North?

Nyeeeeeaaaah. I talked to my dad about going to AX. He says to ask my mom. >.>
But that would be the best place to meet up. ::nod nod::
i'll probably end up flying down myself, hopefully it won't be too expensive^^

Of course you're welcome to come, Matt! *cough* Unless... I don't know... YOU MERELY WISH TO TALK BADLY ABOUT OTHERS BEHIND THEIR BACKS AND ACCUSE THEM OF HOMEWRECKING AND WHAT NOT. *cough* In that case, just stay home. :D

Weeell, I'm sorta planning for AX travel already. I'll probably end up flying on my own, but I'm still trying to convince my boyfriend to come with me. He might not have the cash though. ^^

If I don't have my liscence by then, I demand the first person I see to slap me across the face and say, "LOZER!!111" But I will, so that won't happen. I'll be driving up to Anaheim like I always have, and on top of that, I'm having a party at my house and you're all invited to come. :D

Sooo, apparently I might be catching a ride to AX with Stripper Vash and my friend Pete.
This is still a maybe, depending on if we can get Pete's hook ups to work so we don't have to pay for gas/tolls.
We'll see what goes.
lmao. I'd go but I have this little problem with living in Canada...
come hop on a bus or plane with me and we'll go conquer the US together! :P
what cosplays is everyone gonna do ?_? i'm curious

I'm still thinking. I'm cosplaying Ino (Naruto) with Katie (Sakura). And I know I want to cosplay Kadaj, problem is, I've never worked with leather before. I may use vinyl, but even that will be hard. Everything about the costume is very advanced. I'm also thinking of cosplaying as Asuka (she is my favorite anime character). I am going to have to think long (not too long) and hard over this. I know at AWA, cosplay brought up problems. I want to hang out with everyone, but I also want to be involved in the convention. Cons are great places to meet up, but I'm starting to understand why people were adamant about a non-convention meeting, not that I'm any less excited. I'm ecstatic in fact. Who are you cosplaying as Lila?

So it's definately AX '05? If so, I will try my hardest to come. The convention isn't that expensive compared to what I paid for Amecon2004, but the plane ride would be a money shove AND long AND by myself (unless Azure came XD). And there would be other costs like travel insurance that I'd have to talk to my mother about.
Unless it comes to about £1000 total, I can probably make it :)

Unless you have to have a pass to get into the con, I'm not sure I'd even buy a con pass this time. Cons suck. People are awesome.

yeah i want to see everyone as well, but not miss out on all the con events!
for cosplay the only costume i recently completed that is pretty simple but fun is my Ash Ketchum costume, i've got a couple other cosplays i'm working on mainly to sell so I can save up some money. I'm on a big slayers kick right now so the other cosplay on my agenda is Lina Inverse.
Katie told me about the group naruto cosplay but i've never seen the show but if i get the chance too i could put something together for that. I don't think i'll bring more than 3 costumes along. I still don't know how some girls can do 7+ costumes in one weekend

I can't begin to imagine how much this will cost. Convention, hotel, cosplay, plane flight .... arg arg arg.
But yes, I am going. My mum is going to help me set up a savings account to pay for the plane and then hotel room and then all I really have to pay for is the convention fee and cosplay (which is going to be a major pain in the ass)
So yuss, I'm coming to AX05.
Holy crap I'm going to California.
