View Full Version : Character Anime girl voices performed by an adult male.

I suppose it might come in handy to be able to perform both male and female voices, and, as much as I dislike anime, I might need to act in one some day to pay the bills.

http://media.putfile.com/Anime-girl-voices-demo-performed-by-an-adult-male

Right, so I tried my hand at creating these anime female voices that everyone seems so obsessed with both here and over at the Voice Acting Club.

Opinions?

On all the places I posted this, everyone keeps saying. Haha, doesn't anyone listen all the way through?
At the end I speak in my regular voice.

I really wish people would listen to the whole thing (it's only a minute), but if you don't have the time (or when you're done), here's something I threw together when I got my new mic a few weeks ago:
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9264/samplemi7.swf
It was just a quick fifteen minutes of me messing around, but it's the only sample of my male voice I have on my computer at the moment.
(This was also a parody demo.)

I've never sat down and made a proper demo reel. I voice act on occasion for other animators, but most of the time I only ever pick up my mic when recording lines for my own productions. I should get to that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Though it is a little creepy that a male does girl voices. My ego would hurt if i try female voices. Even in the professional business I doubt they will hire a male to do a female voice when they could just get a genuine female so I think it's a waste of time, but your girl voices are very good. Well done.

But I'm low on guy auditions. :P

I like your guy voice... ya think you could check-out my Tales of Symphonia skit? http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/showthread.php?t=25958

Or Chobits Hearts? XD http://voiceactingalliance.com/board/showthread.php?t=16162

For Tales of Symphonia: only 2 males are needed. One is teenager, sick and stuff sounding, the other is low, bishi angst-ish voice.

Chobits Hearts... a LOT is needed.

In the Professional Industry there are many instances where men perform female voices. Some can really hit the ol granny voices quite good and other over the top type female characters. So they are hired for the job!^^

This demo is actually the first I've heard of a guy performing young animated girl voices so it's surprisingly shocking in a good way.

As for him getting work that would ultimately depend on the casting director. If Toad can deliver the kind of voice they want for the character be it a female character, then there is no reason why they wouldn't give him a job. They don't really discriminate whether it's a male performing a female type of voice while it might seem unusual to some.

This guy is blessed with a really versatile range and if he pursues voice acting, as I mentioned earlier I really think he could have two good demos to compete with professionaly.

Yeah there's quite a few times where men play older female roles, such as Roz in Monster's Inc and Edna "E" Mode in The Incredibles. Those are both guys that actually play them.

It is a surprise to see more around here though that can do that.

Nearly every female character on the Muppet show is played by a male (ooh, speaking of which, I should make a demo with samples of all my imitations of the Muppet characters).
This is actually the case in a very large number of productions.

Not to mention that a good number of the top actors in Hollywood have played women in their movies.
Dustin Hoffman
Robin Williams
Martin Larence
Eddie Murphy
John Travolta
and others.

How unfair!!!! The male vocal chords are just unfair! XD

I know plenty of guys who can't even imitate other guys. So it's not a universal male thing.
But yeah, women are generally cursed with less range than males. I've only ever heard a few females who could sound like a male (who didn't have a disorder), while I've heard thousands of males imitate females.
Not to mention that the average male voice actor has a lot more ranges than the average female voice actor.
I think it's a natural thing, so whenever I hear a female overcome it and produce a really quality range of voices, I'm much more impressed than when I hear a male do the same.

You do sound very much like an female.

Haha, I'll take that as a compliment. Thank you!

Nah, these are some of my lousy voices. I've never practiced these. The only time I've done anime girl voices was when I was entertaining friends or people who knew about anime.
I'm much better at male voices. (Obviously, as I'm a male.)

Hm. I don't know what to do for a male demo though. With this I had source material to parody (basically, I just mocked all the anime female demos out there).

Everyone make a list of male voices (preferably popular people, who I could find videos and audio of on YouTube and stuff) and give me three days to practice them.
Then I'll just improvise into a mic for half an hour (like I did with this demo).

Thats not what voice acting is about.

Anybody can copy someone else's voice with practice. What voice acting is about is acting. Having a good range of acting/emotion and consistently keeping that.

Anyone can do weird voices, it's the characters behind those voices that make you a voice actor.

No, not really.
That's a pretty arrogant statement, and imagine how all the people who can't do good imitations (no matter how hard they try) feel when you say that kind of stuff.

But if you want to back that up, how about I give you a list of voices and you prove you can imitate them almost perfectly (take as much practice as you need).

What voice acting is about is acting. Having good acting/emotion and consestently keeping it.

Not really.

There are millions upon millions of people who can be convincing and put on a wide range of emotions, and constantly keep it up. True, some are better than others, but some are just more naturally gifted than others. And once you've finally gotten to the point where you're a quality, convincing actor, there's only so much improvement you can make, and this can only be gained through years of experience.

As I said, there are millions of convincing actors. So what decides who's better when both people can put on oustandingly flawless performances?
Their range of voices. How many different people they can sound like. What kinds of voices and accents and pitches they have. Which impersonations they can put on.

Also, a lot of voice acting is about humor. If you can do comedy, you have another serious advantage.

There's a lot more to voice acting than just

Anyone can do weird voices, it's the characters behind those voices that make you a voice actor.

If by weird voices, you mean hundreds of different characters like such talented actors as Billy West and Robin Williams can, then, no, not anyone can, no matter how much practice they have.

Create your own voices and get better at acting.

Oh, I've created quite a few of my own voices.
Also, you've never heard my actual acting.

My friend, we all have vocal cords and we all can change our vocal cords through the process of practice. From making are voices sound like monsters to mimicking it to sound exactly like animals or humans. It just takes time and practice. Some longer then others, but none the less it just takes time.

What also matters is commitment.

There are many actors, but a physical actor doesn't mean a good voice actor for there are many physical actors who are not very good at voice overs.

It's about acting and whether your voice fits the character or not. Of course there are other things that helps you improve your acting, such as being a comedian.

If by weird voices, you mean hundreds of different characters like such talented actors as Billy West and Robin Williams can, then, no, not anyone can, no matter how much practice they have.

You don't understand the statement. It doesn't matter how many voices you have. Thats not the point. The point is anyone can do a wacky voice. What matters is getting a feeling for the character so when he talks through a wide range of emotion it sounds natural. Not just the voice, but the emotion coming out of the voice as well.

Oh, I've created quite a few of my own voices.
Also, you've never heard my actual acting.

Scott Mcneil is the one who said that.

The black highlighted sentence.

I know that he said it. What I meant to say is the context to which your comment was applied made you sound like a dick. Squeakytoad invited people to challenge his mimicry abilities and you came in and basically acted like he was a moron for doing so, stating that real acting ability takes precedence over being able to impersonate people. And that's correct, imitation is no substitute for being a good actor. The thing is, I don't believe he said anything to the contrary. And the fact that people enjoy hearing others imitate people suggests that there is a bit more worth to that skill than you might think.

When you said, give me a video of someone and three days to copy there voice. Doesn't mean much.

It wasn't meant to mean much. I was just asking for that kind of stuff so I could get some voices to put together a demo with.
A demo can't portray the characters, consistency, emotion, all that kind of stuff. It's basically just to show you can do a range of voices and know what you're doing.

It wasn't me trying to make a statement to say "how good I am" or anything.
Why did you take it like that?
I'm not here to brag or show off.

Man, lighten up.

I'm not necessarily saying you are jealous, but you're sounding it. Which there isn't much reason for being.
I just posted a fun parody that a bunch of people laughed at. No one's prancing around declaring themselves king of voice acting.

Yeah. I think there's a point where I can't perfectly emulte a female voice as, just as you said, I'm a guy. There's only so much I can do. My male voice breaks in just a little.
Maybe if I keep practicing those I'll accomplish an indistinguishably female voice some day.
Also, when voicing a cartoon character, people won't notice the maleness as much, as they're not concentrating on the voice alone, but listening to what is said as well as watching what's going on.
And if they're unaware of the fact that it's played by a male, it'll be even harder for them.

Thanks!

No idea who that is (which might be a crime around here- if so, I plead ignorance), but thanks anyway!

Crispin Freeman is a widely known voice actor. Look him up. :)

That is quite an excellent falsetto - it would never have occurred to me to try to speak with one...

I just did. Haven't seen anything he's played in really. Sorry. =/

At the beginning of the thing, I thought that your regular voice might just be high pitched regularly, I was really surprised to hear that your normal voice is pretty low.

Heh, a lot of people did and didn't bother to finish listening to it. Now a bunch of web people are going around thinking I actually sound like that.

If you're still looking for suggestions on male voices to do, you could always do these:

"Smells Like Victory" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=bPXVGQnJm0w)

Joe Dirt - fireworks stand (http://youtube.com/watch?v=WH2uifOWP-k&feature=related)

Spaceballs - When Will Then be Now? (Granted it has more than one actor, but I was thinking Lord Helmet for this one.) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zvd3kaupZ60)

Also, can you do other races? These, and your other males, seemed to be all white. I'd love to hear some other ethnicities. :-P

What does voice have to do with skin color? I have a good number of black friends who grew up in the same suburban neighborhoods I came out of, and, were you to talk with them on the phone, there would be no distinguishable difference between their voices and mine. My voice is actually deeper, naturally, than most of theirs.
It's the same with many Asian friends I have.

People too often pin a cross between an inner city slum and southern accent (think Chris Rock) on black people (which is incredibly racist) and an Anglo-Chinese stumbling accent (think Jackie Chan) upon anyone Asian (also pretty racist).

I can do those accents, but I wouldn't really say they're accents of those ethnicities. Someone can be of a different racial background but have a completley different accent from anyone else of that racial background depending on where they're raised.

I listened to the first demo, and wow, most of those are really good. A few just sound comical, and even more sound like little boys, but that's good. You almost never have an adult male actor that can pull off a realistic young boy voice. A few of them though, wow, I may not have been able to figure out it was a guy without knowing beforehand.

I gotta ask though, is it hard to keep those voices consistent? I know I've got a Princess Peach impression that's murder on the throat.

I don't know. I've never tried to shout like a girl for more than five minutes... imagine that would thoroughly convince my neighbors I'm completely insane...

Yeah, perhaps I shouldn't have said "race," but I think ethnicities is the right word to use.

pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.

Usually, but not all the time, people whom share the same characteristics sound the same.

But yeah, I wasn't trying to sound racist at all, and I'm sorry if I came off that way. I couldn't really explain it anybetter than that.
