I saw it on the plane home today... Night flight, so there I was squinting to read these little yellow subtitles at some insane hour, and I didn't mind one bit! Anyone else seen it? I loved it <3 Without giving too much away... it's about three homeless people (Hana; an ex-drag-queen, Gin; middle-aged drunk/'biker', and Miyuki; a teenage runaway) who accidentally find this baby apparently abandoned in the trash. The rest of the film is trying to find "Kiyoko"'s parents, and also - just as importantly - finding out a lot about each other's pasts and relationships and how they ended up where they were.
The little summary in the plane plugged it as "both harrowing and heartwarming" or something, which seemed to get it just right. Some bits were just funny... some bits were so sad [spoiler:e57ccaaf58]like when Miyuki calls her dad on the payphone...[/spoiler:e57ccaaf58], some shocking [spoiler:e57ccaaf58]like when those guys beat up Gin and the old man...[/spoiler:e57ccaaf58] but at the same time it was a lovely Christmas story aswell and really magic :)
Uh... yeah, so I really liked it a lot. :P I liked it because of the amazing depth of characterisation, and the kewl little plot twists, and the humour and the emotion... and because it wasn't your "typical anime"... The main characters weren't at all perfect (Gin even makes some comment about being homeless bums not action heroes!) but you love them, or at all 'pretty' in the usual way, either in looks or voice, and that was really refreshing.
Anyway, very good movie. Highly recommend it to anyone. (Well, anyone over the age of however old you think you should be to deal with some 'social issues' etc) I think it's out on DVD in America anyway... And now I need some SLEEP. G'night!
