And yes, I have a few sketches to post. I'm starting to draw reference for Soul Heaven (cowritten by Nic-kun) as we're submitting it as a manga shortly. I'm still trying to gather missing lines for the second scene >_>. I never realized how underdeveloped the story was compared to the characters. Here are the workings of some model sheets.
Sacri Malorafect, the lead male character. I can't get his hair the way I want it anymore... ~_~ Anyway, he's a genius in disguise. Lazy with a "I don't care" and "let's party" attitude, he rarely makes it to class, but seems to ace exams anyway. He has no family save his younger brother, who he would do anything for. He also likes the ladies ^^; (gahh need to work on the lower image more >_>)
Joanna Lovelock, the lead female, is top of fashion and trends, but somewhat shy when it comes to interacting with people. She is a perfectionist in her work and has yet to find her goal in life. She is good friends with Ellie, which helps to stabalize her erratic emotions. Being born in a military class family, she is expected to fulfill her parents expectations.
Elenor Price (Ellie) is outgoing, friendly, excitable and all the things that Joanna is not. Ellie is also among the top in her class, but holds onto her fun-loving personality which rubs off on the people around her. She manages to sneak her way into the recruitment exam to find out what is happening to the others. She is also long time friends with Sacri. Her design is totally redone from the original concept, so I definitely need to sort her out more...
And finally Ashkel, the fourth member of thier team after Zag is arrested for some mysterious incident. He always seems to be in another place and wears headphones constantly. Ashkel is also the technician of the group, being exceptional with advanced machinery, but inept when it comes to social activity. In other words, he appears very shy and rarely speaks to others.
vehicle concepts are really hard ~__~
Zag, the unknown factor. Maybe he's on thier side, maybe he's got alterior motives. He's after Joanna, in any case, since he is also from a prestigious bloodline. He and Sacri are at each others' throats constantly. He was originally slated to be one of the GDF surface mission team, but was replaced by Ashkel at the last minute. They find out later, he was trying to access restricted files in the military database and gets caught.
A possible design for the drop ship the team falls to the surface in. It's really big to withstand the landing impact. It wedges partially into the ground to remain upright... that's the idea anyway. From there, the team takes the land vehicle, leaving the empty dropship empty.
Possible flying vehicle. Thought it would also serve as the drop ship, but it's not practicle for that sort of thing as it's designed for horizontal travel. I dunno if I'll have Ashkel smuggle this onboard the drop ship or not....
08-12-2004, 12:33 AM
I'm likin Ashkel the best so far XD.
But this looks like a really awsome manga! Good lucks from SpikeDaPenguin :D :D
08-12-2004, 01:12 AM
Yeah~ its all coming together.
I've been doing some more outfit designs for Jo and Ellie. They've kinda come out like those paper doll designs (anyone remember those?). Ahh, MS Paint can't be beat.
Anyway, while doing those I did an Oekaki of Jo in the battle suit and made it look like a 'manga scan'. Its dumb, I know. But feast!
08-12-2004, 01:36 AM
If you don't want to hear any critisism (constructive, but mostly compliments ^^) skip by this post! ^^
Heeh, this is the same way I draw when I'm trying to come up with character costumes, hair, etc. (before I draw the actualy one)
---that is not to be taken as an insult *glares*
-Ashkel is awesome! Seriously. Best EV-ER! *glomps for Lina for doing awesome job*
-That large head shot of Joanna reminds me alot of Tifa from FFVII for some strange reason. Nice job also, like to outfit! ^^ (lol I would probably wear that, minus the sandals O.o)
-Ellie was done nicely too, 'cept for some reason I don't like the bottom middle picture, looks alot like that old Zelda cartoon-style drawings (no offence)
-Really like Zag's full body shot! ^^
-And no offence, you did an AWESOME job, but those last two pics seemed a little...less detailed than the others...
Well, keep up the awesome job! Don't let critisism get you down, either!
08-12-2004, 01:52 AM
Its nice to see decent crit for once. Constructive is good!
08-12-2004, 02:34 AM
Thankees for posting the Jo oekaki, Nic-kun!! <3
SpikeDaPenguin: *laughs* Thanks!! Ashkel certainly turned out differently than before... I'm glad you like!
Ariadyne: Constructive crit is always good! I'm glad people are relating the designs to look a bit FF-ish since it was my intention from the get-go XD Thanks muchly. I'm not sure what you mean by Zelda cartoon style (never played the games myself x_X) though Ellie's design is the one I'm least confident with at the moment^^; Which last two pictures do you mean? The ones Nic-kun has posted? They are quick oekaki doodles (as he mentioned already) or do you mean the ship concepts?
Anyhoo, I'll be working more on them for the finalized chara design model sheets need to be how the manga will look when finished. eeeeeee next shall be how the Heavens should look like!!!!!!! *cowers from the background drawing*
08-12-2004, 12:26 PM
I'm not sure what you mean by Zelda cartoon style (never played the games myself x_X)
Oh, long ago there was this Legend of Zelda cartoon on tv based off the first Zelda game. I think it came on in the late 80s or something, but I use to watch it as a kid. ^^
Which last two pictures do you mean? The ones Nic-kun has posted? They are quick oekaki doodles (as he mentioned already) or do you mean the ship concepts
I was talking about the ship concepts
08-12-2004, 05:42 PM
That's so darn funky, although I have to say I'm not 100% fond on the large noses I can appreciate it 's your style.
waii! like em too much to C& C really.
08-12-2004, 09:56 PM
So Zag goes bad? o.o *spins* lovely art as always, Lina! I love your style ^^. I wanna record for this~
That's some good drawing. Almost as good as mine.
Just kidding
That's some very nice work.
Udon comics is having a talent search in your area last June.
To bad you missed out on that.
08-13-2004, 05:12 PM
He goes bad. And HOW!
08-13-2004, 05:28 PM
Ariadyne: OMG there was a cartoon!!?? That frightens me O__O hahah the ship things are sucky cause I generally don't draw mechanical things well haaahaha~!! Oh well, I can fake it when they're modeled and slap on some cool textures and image maps XD.
Azure: YAYness!! Thankees, Azure-saaann~!!
TamTu: YEAH baby!! Zag gets to totally go psycho XD. It'll be FUN~!! ^_~
U-1: Are??? I missed Udon recruitment? o_O nNNOoooOOooo~!!!! *does the noodle wiggle* Though I'd like to have shown some better work haha! TThanks though!
08-13-2004, 07:17 PM
SEND ME SCRIPTS. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOW XDDDDD
08-13-2004, 08:02 PM
Ohhh nice drawings. I'm loving Joanna's outfit. It is kinda futuristic with a touch of the 70's. Did you design it yourself?
08-15-2004, 09:18 AM
Lina designed this particular outfit for Jo, yus!
I think I'll be in love with Ashkel - I do like him. Looks like the type of character I'd like.
On a technical note: I did like the three images of Elli on the right hand side of that sketch page. They make a very good grouping. If you were to redo those character sketches, that grouping is perfect as it is, and perhaps move the standing pose slightly closer to that grouping.
Very good work on all of the character sketches.
I see you're having a far better time at designing ships than I am at the moment. I'm trying to design a space ship for some characters I'm working on but as soon as I start putting pencil to paper, the thoughts in my head just go missing!
Well done, looking forward to seeing more.
*big thumbs up* :D
08-20-2004, 07:49 PM
3d versions to come (for the ship/s). I'm working on layout designs at the moment and will post when it's done. I'm trying to figure out what the Heavens will look like^^;;
Anyway, here are some more chara concept work. I was attempting to design a more mission-oriented ground suit for the team (Jo is modeling) and Kih, a surface dweller, on the right. Kih's guardian is that dog/jackal thing named Lynxis. It doesn't talk, despite its... anthro-ish proportions. I may make him more beast like in the actual thing since he's more like Kih's pet than an intellegent creature.
08-20-2004, 08:34 PM
08-20-2004, 09:04 PM
How in the heck do you do it? O_O!
How long have you been drawing?
08-20-2004, 09:58 PM
OMG! Kih is so cute! lol.
That full body pic of Lynxis reminds me a bit of Anubis, one the Egyptian Gods...probably because of the jackal head, lol. Again, another job well done!
I'd offer some actual critisism, but I can't find anything worth mentioning anyway, and I love your art too much to notice if anything was wrong, lol ^^
((edit: and by the way, the link in your sig doesn't work *tear*))
08-21-2004, 03:28 AM
O_O wow XDD awesome character sheets!!!! Joanna and Elenor are fantastic! and i Luuuuufff luf luufff how you draw bishies!! What and amazing manga it will be X) aw i wish you the best of luck!!!
08-24-2004, 10:23 PM
Umm.. ^^;; drawing since I could pick up a crayon? I have no idea. Anime/manga style for about 5 or 6 yrs. XD
I was thinking of Anubis while drawing Lynxis! Uwaahh~ Why doesn't my sig link work??? ARGH the address is correct o__O;;
Thanks again for looking! I need so much help with perspective it's terribly hilarious ~__~
Sacri needs more brow from the side hahahaa
Reel in sheer horror of the perspective issues!! OMG I suck at drawing anything technical >_<
08-26-2004, 10:17 PM
Here is my FLYING POTATO. I've been working on it for DAYS and it still looks like crap. I'm giving up now and actually going to draw by hand what I see in my head. This doesn't even come close to resembling it. The proof I can NOT draw on computer:
Don't laugh TOO hard....
Well I won't laugh, I'm still having problems getting my idea of my ship from my head to paper!
You've done so much work, very good. (Sorry, that "very good" sounds very pathetic, or worse, but not meant to be).
What are you worried about? Your perspective isn't too bad, I've seen so much worse from people who claim they can do perspective! What exactly is concerning you about that? I don't know if I'd be able to help, I find it's difficult demonstrating drawng tips without taking the person through it in real life.
I do like your drawing style, it's fresh, there's lots of movement in the figures and knowledge of form.
08-27-2004, 02:31 PM
Those are all so awesome, Lina! Keep up all your great work; I always love looking at your picture posts. My favorites are Lynxis and Kih.
08-27-2004, 11:05 PM
Thank you sooo much for petting the potato~!
Aelf: I am unworthy of such comments XD honestly, perspective was my worst class next to composition. Maybe it was just the teacher... o_O;; I wouldn't say it's near a professional level tho'. Will keep practicing!
Miki-Chan: Argatouu! Those two are my faves, tooooo~
Meanwhile, here's something different. For a shoujo story (high school romance or whatever)! Gotta create all different types, even though this kind of story is boring for me most of the time:
And a comedy story in in development, too. Called "Everyday Ninjas" or "E-nin". It's .... random XD.
08-28-2004, 04:35 AM
o_0 I was at your devArt today, and I didn't even know it!
08-29-2004, 05:55 PM
I love how you have such a unique and consistent style! And your designs for each character is really distinct! Were there any specific artists who inspired you?
Give me your talent! Lol! xD!
08-30-2004, 03:46 AM
lirifox: Are??? REALLY? My DA thingie? Yay! I only signed up for it recently^^;;
..Humanoid.Typhoon..: Heehh?? You CRAZY!! hahah somehow I never find this stuff conistent at all :P Everything inspires me. Anime most obviously: Rui Araizumi, Shoko Yoshinaka, Tsukasa Kotobuki, Arina Tanemura, Atsuko Ishida, Hitoshi Okuda etc. etc. Feel free to take this away so I can concentrate on singing... onegai? T__T
08-31-2004, 03:47 AM
wonderful perspective there!! an the flash of colors is brillaint ^^
09-01-2004, 03:01 AM
Thank you~ I'm trying to improve my perspective since it's probably my weakest area x_X
SH manga pages in progress
*cries* I am not trying to be sucky but I am in owe of those latest pictures. I'm very impressed.
I really mean this - those are spectacular! I adore your colouring technique. And get away from the idea your perspective is your weak point - NO IT ISN'T! And from I can see, you have a good eye for composition too. I don't know what your art teacher was on about!
Simply lovely work.
09-02-2004, 02:07 AM
ah wonderful panneling ^_^ i like the flow and your perspetcie has imrpooved in that top pannel there!! ((gah perspective was the hardest thing i had to do semester befoer last T-T;; ))
09-02-2004, 02:50 AM
lirifox: Are??? REALLY? My DA thingie? Yay! I only signed up for it recently^^;;
Heehee! *nodnod* I watched you a while ago. =3 I'm DoaFox.
09-02-2004, 07:35 PM
Page 6 (the buidling will be line-drawn for the final)
And that's it for the submission~ I mean, until I get it inked & toned.
09-02-2004, 07:44 PM
Wow just wow your work is so solid and well drawn. I wouldn't even know where to start! I can't wait to see more ^^
You and me both Azure, I can't wait for more. I can't wait to read the finished product, I love the sort of stuff, and with the good drawing should be a dream to read.
09-03-2004, 06:47 PM
huzzah so there are now 3 of us *hehe* i love the character experssion! such attitude X) yummmybishie grandness!
09-03-2004, 09:10 PM
.....*FANBOY* XD! Love it.
09-04-2004, 08:52 PM
WaaiiI~! Thank you muchly again for checking out my doodles XD Bwahahah!! I've been trying to get the hang of drawing men x__x hopefully it's passable! Though us girls can never get enough bishiness anyway  If I can't have one of my own, I'll just have to draw them.
Anywya, I'm working on a commission for a website mascot... here she is so far...
09-04-2004, 09:32 PM
veerrrryyy sweet X) the glasses are not only trendy but a great contrast wi the purple hair!! ^0^ well done!
09-04-2004, 11:01 PM
Oh god, I've gone from love to jealousy, lol. I've been avoiding drawing and writing now for a long time, but I guess you'll inspire me to get up off my lazy bum. ^^
Keep up the good work! (no critiques this time around! ^^ by the way, I really like your shoujo-story characters, cute!!)
09-04-2004, 11:43 PM
Love that contrast >D
09-10-2004, 09:30 PM
Thank you all muchly ^___^
SH manga pages are inked... adding tones.
09-11-2004, 12:34 AM
Yay for inking! lol. Now, I would offer some more praises and comments, but...I already commented on the non-inked versions, so commenting on the inked versions would just be a bit repetetive, lol.
Well, can't wait to see the finished products! Keep up the good work, and good luck! ^^
09-11-2004, 01:48 AM
Mad skillz you have. o.o; Wow...when can I buy this at Waldenbook's?
09-12-2004, 03:17 AM
Thanks soooo much! I'm trying not to hope for too much tho'. It's tough to get what those dudes are looking for... since sometimes it's vague and the slightest thing can go for or against you.
Waldenbooks? o_O does Tokyopop get distributed there? ^^; I'd be grateful if just one person bought it haha Thankeesss!
This next page is insanely busy in the lower panel so I'll be removing the action lines.
I may change the "--" to a "tsu" since it "ba" shouldn't be extended (that's the sound effect on the bottom, btw^^; )
Yami no Kitsune
09-12-2004, 09:24 AM
That's so pretty!! ^^ Nice manga style!
09-12-2004, 01:31 PM
Wow, you never fail to impress me! ^^
Gee...wish I knew how to do that o.O I couldn't color something on the computer if my life depended on it.
This next page is insanely busy in the lower panel so I'll be removing the action lines
I don't think you should, I like it the way it is. ^^
09-13-2004, 01:59 AM
O.O!!!!!!!! Wow. ::silence::
I second Matt. I'd totally buy this. ^____^
Can I be your first *official* fan? Heehee. xD!!
09-13-2004, 05:34 PM
Can I be your first *official* fan? Heehee. xD!!
I call seconds, lol. ^^ Keep up the good work!
09-14-2004, 01:35 AM
Yes....I wanna buy the complete version.
09-14-2004, 02:17 AM
Yami no Kitsune: Thank you, i'm so glad you like it... since I've heard otherwise before haha like this being called "too cartoony".
Ariadyne: Aiyaaaa is it really that impressive? XD I'm a bit scared the tones are overdone hahaa though I was told to use them as much as possible. erm... so much for going Naruto style with almost no tones!!
..Humanoid.Typhoon..: Hahaha official fan?? eeee who knows if that will ever happen O_O. I mean, that would be unimaginable!!
Let's hope there will be a complete version!! I worked a lot longer on these than other manga pages I've done. Speaking of which, I've revised the previous pages some more and changed some things (thickened panel box lines, changed font etc.) I'm kind of worried the TP editor will have something entirely different in mind ~_~
Last two pages:
I want to be your fan too!!
It's just perfect!
I'll say again, I'm so looking forward to the whole thing. If you ever print this manga, I will most certainly buy it. In fact can I put in a pre-order now? I'm serious, it's so impressive.
09-27-2004, 12:12 AM
eeee thankees *__*
I'll let you know what happens... I've just sent the package so hopefully I'll hear back this week *crosses fingers*
In the mean time, Here's some stuff I've been doing since the comic pages...... more Soul Heaven craps.
09-27-2004, 12:27 AM
*stares* So impressive.
09-27-2004, 11:34 PM
*stares* So impressive.
I second that opinion! ^.~
Yami no Kitsune
09-29-2004, 02:58 PM
Will the trail of talent never end!?!?!
No, you're style isn't too cartoony, and you should laugh in anyone's faces that say it is. If you look at Kazuki Takahashi's early style (creator of Yuugiou), it wasn't always so clean cut like it is in the final issue of the Yuugiou manga, and looks a lot more cartoony than your style.
You have a very distinctive style, and I'm very impressed with your inking especially... I could never do that so neat and nice. I'm sure that you'll be successful in breaking into the manga/comics industry. ^.~
09-30-2004, 09:42 AM
I love the shading in pencil. I'd always love seeing things in sketch form. Your art is awesome! Me was browsing all the pages and wowing at your art. XD I wanna draw like that! How old are you? I'm curious ;-; (Is it too late for someone like me? ;-;)
: 3 I'm wondering about how you colored the actual comic pages too -- because I'm thinking about making doujins and all that but I have no idea about inking and tones and all that. X.x Waaah.
Methinks you can succeedness~ ^_^ :D Good Luck to you! Btw, me curious if you like mangas lots too!
*the curious little fangirl*
10-01-2004, 03:45 AM
Thankyeh's all! :D Still waiting on the comics thing so in the mean time I'm taking a class on making cover letters, resumes, interview skills etc. >___> *sigh*
YukiYuki: Anyone can draw at any age- that's for sure. There are people who START painting when they retire o_O; So it's never "too late". There's loads of ways you can tone or color a manga. Same goes for inking- some people do it on the computer, others do it by hand. Personally, I ink everything by hand, scan into the computer then apply screentones digitally as though I were doing it traditionally. I've bought lots of screen tones and scanned them for reuse. <--- a little more pocketbook friendly than going full traditional ne??
Then again, most people develop their own way of doing things that they are most comfortable with! Just gotta experiment :P
Sooooo here are fashion doodles! Somehow I prefer doodling in ballpoint pen as opposed to pencil. Dunno why.
random big-boobed chick:
If I ever go to fashion design school, I'll make these.
10-01-2004, 08:51 AM
Somehow I prefer doodling in ballpoint pen as opposed to pencil. Dunno why.
I love doodling with a ballpoint pen too.. Except I haven't been doing that lately... >_> Because pencil became my bestfriend...
I love the detail on the clothes ^_^ *takes notes* Ink manually and then put tones via puter -- Check. I'll keep that in mind. XD Waah. I need to work hard >_< ;-;
Yami no Kitsune
10-01-2004, 09:56 AM
Wow, very nice clothes designs. Lots of detail. I design clothes and costumes myself, so I'm well impressed! ^^
10-01-2004, 05:44 PM
Wow, they're really good...awesome as always XD
Did you ever play Guilty Gear? The hair thing in the first picture reminds me of Jam...oh well ^.~
I like all the outfits, they're crazy like the ones I design XD Well, no critiques, you're too good! Keep up the good work! ^.~
10-04-2004, 07:01 AM
Ahhh my bandwidth is SO going to die this month...
YukiYuki: Pencils' good too! And col-erase!
Yami no Kitsune: Cooliesssss I haven't sewn anything in years (no space and no time ;_; ) thank yeh! Sometimes it's hard to find clothes that are unique. At least I have a lot of trouble finding clothes I like that fit. >_<
Ariadyne: Yep, I've played GGX! I made a Jam cosstume a couple years back, too. Though I thought her hair went around in a loop? Those kinds of hair clasps are pretty common in Chinese historical wear ^_~.
Thanks again for looking & posting!! =^.^=
Finished Ave & Jem pic: Also found some interesting photoshop brushes so the BG ended up being pretty easy.
10-04-2004, 09:11 AM
oooh now I like those brush effects those pics have a great feel to 'em.
10-04-2004, 09:14 AM
I'd always wondered how everyone makes such anime-looking lines. My pictures always come out... weird. But I think I really understand now. XD Something about not putting too much detail on the inking and leaving that for the shadows and shading to show... Must keep it in mind XD!!
And lol, yes, your bandwith is sooo going to suffer. Everyone's watching you! XD Now, XD I think I'll spend my night catching up on the drawings me promised for friends. XD Your art inspires me, I wanna draw as awesomely (that's not a word, ne?) you do! XD ^_^
What photoshop do you use? ^_^ I wanna learn! Gimme tutorials? ;-;
PS, what's colerase? ;-; I'm using PSP 6... >_>
10-22-2004, 03:14 PM
Wow your really talented!
10-23-2004, 05:26 PM
nyaaaa i haff missed watching this thread XDD!!! gah those sketchies are to DIE for!!! your costumes are VERY original and your characters have such an awesome feel to them! and man can you CG cel shadedly x)!!! bwahah i saw your stuff on gaia the otha day and was like *squeeeeeeeee*
^0^ good luckies wi the manga!! the tones were very nice *nodnod*
x) ohki that's it in a nutshell!! *teehee* *frollicks about as a fan gal*
